If you want specifically an action/RPG get Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. It has excellent graphics, great gameplay, a cool story and has a reasonable length to it. I stumbled across this game by accident, and can't stop raving about how great it was (It also has a perfect 2 player cooperative mode that allows you to add or remove players at will just in case you wish to play without your friends.

Devil May Cry was very good as well, MGS2 (Short as heck though) Dark Cloud is pretty good too. Otherwise get a Super Nintendo and a copy of Secret of Mana, it's the best Action/RPG ever.
