Matski's BMW Art Car Project: Update #1

One of the things I wanted to do once we found out the capabilities of the uploader, was to try and recreate the BMW Art Cars. As with my modern DTM series, I wanted to use the BMW VGT as the canvas for the artcars - It's not ideal, but if I can't recreate all the cars using the original base canvas/cars (which we can't, and realistically won't be able to), then I wanted to keep them all on the same model. I love the BMW VGT, so I'm happy enough with this, though it isn't the greatest car to apply liveries to as there aren't many options with 'other', and no 'wing' options -- so there has to be a little artistic license.

It's actually really interesting researching each one, coming to understand the cars for more than just their liveries.

Anyway.. Only one is done at the moment, but I thought I'd share some WIP shots of some of the ones I'm working on too.

What is it?:
It’s an abstract representation of Parrots and Parrot Fish, which Done perceives to be fast, agile and graceful - just like race cars. Basically an excuse to use the very strong, and very bright colour palette that Done favoured, and can be seen in many of his works.

My Livery:
The body had a simple black base colour from the standard palette. The body gradients were all done using in game gradient decals, pretty much every other detail was applied as a custom decal. On the real car, the wheels are two colour (Red & Yellow) split rims, as this isn’t an option for this car, the wheels are painted with a Red Orange Yellow Colourshift. It was relatively easy to complete, given the basic proportions of the BMW VGT are similar to the E30 M3, albeit with much more curvature. I’d give it 90-95% accurate, the wheels are obviously not replicated despite forming part of the real cars design. I've also not tried to replicate the fuel-filler flap from the real car, as there is no flap on the VGT, but I’m happy with the execution of everything else. Slapping these bright colours on the car was actually a lot fun - a simple and richly satisfying experience!

BMW Art Car 11 | The A.R. Penck Z1, 1991

6052931439363654156_0.jpg

___________________________________

The original car:
The Penck Z1 was one of around 8000 examples produced by BMW. The Z1 was initially only intended as a concept vehicle, but strong public reaction lead to the BMW Technik demonstrator seeing a limited production run, which then kicked of the modern era rebirth of BMW Roadsters.

ar-penck-the-situation-now-black-and-white-800x800.jpg

___________________________________

What is it?:
On the surface of it, the cave painting style seems obvious, and is a style much used by Penck. Slightly deeper inspirations apparently came from Picasso and Rembrandt. It’s often said that his interest in sciences and numbers are also present - I think there is some simple rhythm, lot’s of 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 to the strokes or designs (look for X, XX, XXX, or designs with one stroke, then two, then three - like the designs on the right wing for instance) There’s a T motiff used often which seems to be a reference to another of Winkler's aliases, Mike Hammer, and also his Jazz Band, Triple Trip Touch (or T T T).

My Livery:
The body had a Rouge Rubi base colour. As the design is in no way flowing, nor does it follow the car body, it was pretty simple to just draw up each decal and place in an appropriate spot. Since the real car is a convertible clearly the biggest difference is the presence of decals on the roof. These were shifted from the bonnet and roof cover onto the roof - which kinda works because they were too cluttered when on the original panels. All the designs from the real car are present, and none on my livery were made up. I’d give it 90-95% accurate.

@MatskiMonk Awesome work.

That rainbow line on the rainbow base gradient might have need some SVG tests before working good on the game, knowing how tricky it is to make working gradients.

I'll share them right away, they totally deserves it, and like @Nuschel01 said, thanks for the info on each livery.

Now onto the next one ! :)

From a technical point of view, I've got no problems with gradients, they seem to work fine without any messing about. Like any such shape. drawing them up so they fit the contours of a VGT, and are still very similar to the original can be trial and error though, not so bad with this one, but some of the other WIPS... :banghead:

Jeff Koons, John Baldessari, Alex Calder and Jenny Holzer should all be up this week... I'm getting the easy ones out of the way

BMW Art Car 01 | The Alexander Calder 3.0 CSL, 1975

The original car:
This was the original BMW Art Car. Conceived and commissioned by Herve Poulain, a French author, auctioneer and racing driver, this 3.0CSL competed in the 1975 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sadly it only recorded a DNF, however this wasn't the last time that Poulain would drive at Le Mans in a BMW Art Car.

The Artist:
Alexander Calder was born in Philadelphia, USA, in 1898. Born into two generations of sculptors he had a keen interest in both Art and engineering. His well known works tend to include strong primary colours and shapes, in his mobile sculpture work these colours were often given to single abstract pieces, which was later an element included in the Art Car, and it's precursor, the 1973 Braniff DC-8. He died in New York the year after the Art Car raced, in 1976.

More on Calders life and works is available here http://www.calder.org/

What is it?:
Much of Calders 'Mobile' work dealt with strong colours and simple shapes, often on a relatively large physical scale. The nature of hanging mobiles gave the bright colours a natural movement or dynamic of their own. This was translated to the canvas of the CSL... strong independent shapes were used (i.e. they didn't follow the contours of the car), and by virtue of the fact they were painted on a racing car, they were also given their own dynamic... giving movement to something very solid.

My Livery:
Pretty straight forward really. I got the colour codes from a photo I took of this car in 2012, applied it to various standard decals and kept tweaking until it was right. The VGT body isn't unlike the CSL in proportion, so it translated fairly well. Custom decals were used for the class plate, the number and Calders signature. I’d give it >95% accurate.

BMW Art Car 19 | The John Baldessari M6 GTLM, 2016/17

Baldessari's canvas was a BMW M6 GTLM. It took part in the Rolex 24 hours of Daytona, January 2017. BMW Team RLL, campaigning the M6 GTLM in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, only achieved 8th in GTLM class (12th Overall). Though it did finish the gruelling 24 hour race... it was not what it said on the side.... F A S T

___________________________________

What is it?:
Let's be honest, it doesn't look like much! F A S T is reflection of Baldessari's desire to state something in the simplest of fashions.. it is not complex, it requires no context, nor understanding of a deeper sentiment.... it simply makes a statement. The image of the car on the right hand side was almost an inverse of some of his popular works - where he'd take a photo, and apply abstract shapes to it, in order to mask the usual focal points of the pictures (e.g. faces) and force the viewer to consider aspects they might normally skip past. In the case of the M6, the inverse was true.. the canvas was abstract, and it was the representation of the car that drew the eye. The coloured shapes are common in a lot of Baldessari's art.

My Livery:
Easy to apply, but much more time consuming to generate. White base, simple colour shapes to mimic the real car, which was extremely simple - though as ever, the rear wing of the VGT is a PITA! The greyscale image of the BMW VGT depicted on the side was a photo taken in the livery editor of a blank car, simplified in Photoshop, and Traced in CorelDraw... I then had to slice it into 6 pieces to get to the 15kb filesize limit. The Weathertech logo, and North American Endurance Championship logos used on the race number panels where drawn from scratch --- despite being barely legible, I wasn't happy with autotracing or any previously uploaded images.... this took a couple of hours... so it's odd I then used a pre-existing GTLM decal (which would have taken about 10 seconds to create!). Given that it bares the VGT rather than an M6 on its door I’d give it >95% accurate.

BMW Art Car 17 | The Jeff Koons E92 M3 GT2, 2010

5053677671332972052_0.jpg

The original car:
The base car was an E92 M3 GT2 car that raced in the 78th running of the Le Mans 24 hours. It was piloted by Andy Priaulx, Dirk Werner, and Dirk Muller, and wore the number 79 in reference to Andy Warhol’s M1 art car that also ran at Le Mans in 1979. Unfortunately the car recorded only 53 laps, after running out of fuel part way around the course, it did not finish, classified as 49th overall.

What is it?:
There’s two ways of looking at this, there’s the version that’s normally spoken about in the press releases, and there’s the version where you dig a little deeper…

So… it’s an explosion of speed, characterised by the strong lines, signifying extreme performance, speed and dynamism, and is a symbol of life... this is pretty self explanitory when looking at the design (the vertical curved blue lines around the rear are supposed to represent a sonic boom!), however... dig a little deeper and what you realise is…

It’s a supersonic ejaculation of semen displaying the most important race, the race for life itself! Sperm racing to fertilise an egg! Yup… or in the artists own words, “It symbolises the force of life, the microsecond of creation and that moment of achievement”.

My Livery:
I decided to do this one panel by panel, with one decal covering one panel. I manual traced most of the stripes in CorelDraw, with a few extra ones added in the livery editor to cover joins, or places where the panel was simply too much of a different shape to the M3 GT2. The majority of the colours were sampled directly from the reference image, though as I realised halfway through, the white balance and therefore colour tone of the source images varys quite a bit - so some of the colours will be off. I also can't have the yellow headlamp covers on the VGT, or change the wheels... all things considered it's about 90% accurate (which makes it 90% more accurate than many of the Koons liveries out there). I love the real car, but this has several tedious hours work going into it, and wasn't much fun to do to be honest.

Thanks!

I have a similar issue. The worst thing is, the BMW VGT has NOT ONCE Appeared on my daily prize wheel!!!

Fantastic work! Can't wait to see how you pull off Warhol's or Lichtenstein's livery! 👍

Thanks, Lichtensteins 320 is in progress, haven't started the M1 yet. The M1 is one I'm classing as a brush effect car... in that, like Hockney's 8-Series, and Jagamara's M3, the brush work is visible, and effectively part of the livery. This is tough to replicate accurately.

Your seeds have grown on me...

I’m currently working on an Art Car too. Not a BMW though, no need to do them as the Master is on place ;). Well done again with the Koons E92.

My seed is supersonic!

I look forward to seeing any Art Car inspired works.

BMW Art Car 15 | The Jenny Holzer V12 LMR, 1999

5044116327209403924_0.jpg

The original car:
The basis for Holzers art car was the 1999 V12 LMR racing car, a collaboration between BMW Motorsport, Schnitzer Motorsport, and Williams Grand Prix Engineering. The car wearing the Art Livery was chassis #004/99, it did not actually race at Le Mans, despite taking part in pre-qualifying - one of it's sister cars went on to win the 67th 24 Heures du Mans. The art car did go on to compete the following year at the Petit Le Mans ALMS round, where it finished 5th overall. It's sister car for that race dramatically back-flipped at high speed.

bmw_v12_1999_wallpapers_1_b.jpg

___________________________________

The Artist:
Jenny Holzer was born in 1950 in Ohio, USA and was the daughter of car dealer. She is "neo-conceptual" artist, whose medium isn't sculpture or expressions on canvas... it's the delivery of words. Sounds pretty simple really, but what adds a little weight to it is that she often tries to deliver confrontational truths in a way, or place, where they will hit home - often to make a point.

ost62rdpbftozam89gzx.jpg

___________________________________

What is it?:
The words emblazoned on the V12 LMR mostly relate to the idea of the drive for success, and come from Holzer's Truisms and Survival series. The phrases on the car are, "Protect me from what I want", "The unattainable is invariably attractive", "You are so complex you don’t respond to danger", "Lack of charisma can be fatal", "Monomania is a prerequisite of success", "What urge will save us now that sex won’t?". The letters are chrome foil, designed to reflect the sky during the day, and are outlined with phosphorescent edging to stand out at night... this pays thought to the 24 hour cycle the car is supposed to exist in.

It can't really be more self explanitory... errrm... modern truisms... umm..

Well... all I can suggest to try and contextualise this (and this is my own analysis), is to picture your favourite racing driver, or the iconic drivers from history... imagine applying those labels above, to them and their personalities... are they true? Do they define the driver? That's what I find interesting about it anyway.

I actually quite like this art car. I understand that it's one of the dullest entries here visually, but it does push the boundary beyond simply being an aesthetically pleasing paint job, and something that really makes a statement - something I feel that Cao Fei's M6 from 2017 also managed.
___________________________________
My Livery:
The real V12 LMR, and the BMW VGT are not the same shape, at all.. despite its apparent simplicity this did throw up a few problems. The base car is Chrome W2, the body is then made white using in game decals, with all the slogans being custom decal masks. The real car features chrome letters, but also the letters on the main "Protect me from what I want" words should feature phosphorescent edging, which can't be replicated in game - at least, not whilst using the special paint base colour.

Because of the way the anti-aliasing/transparency works in game, the masks against the reflective chrome looked pretty bad originally - as such, I had to make the double line on the main text broader, and I ditched the double stripe along the cars flanks, in favour of a single stripe.

The real car obviously has a lot of vents etc. in the side of the body, I didn't want to try and replicate those as I don't like decal-fake-bodywork, but I did opt to colour the rear intakes on the VGT, to break up the simple white. Also, the slogan "What urge will save us now that sex won't" originally appears on the headrest of the race car, I chose to place it on the tail of the roof spoiler rather than dismiss it. Simple livery, doesn't translate so well in the livery editor, or in scapes... I'll admit to an 80% accuracy as there's no glow in the dark, the pin striping is simplified, and the position of the slogans cannot be 100% replicated.

BMW Art Car 02 | The Frank Stella 3.0 CSL, 1976

5116684087645471756_0.jpg

The original car:
The second BMW art car, like the first was intended for Le Mans - It was a Group 5 3.2 Turbocharged CSL Batmobile which raced with somewhere around 750hp - despite this immense power, it wasn’t that successful - it DNF’d at Le Mans, and the chassis is listed as previously racing at the Silverstone 6 hours, where it DNF’d. And, after Le Mans, it went to race at the Dijon 6 hours, where it again DNF’d… in all cases, it wasn’t reliable. The 21 number the car wears now is from the Dijon race, it raced at Le Mans with a 41.

The Artist:

Frank Stella was born in Massachusetts, USA, in 1936 to italian parents. As with most artists his style has continued to evolve throughout his life, but strong geometric shapes seem to have been a common element of Stella’s work.

Harran.jpg

Stella was personal friends with racing driver Ronnie Peterson, who drove the Art Car at the Dijon race. After Peterson was killed in an accident at Monza in 1978, Stella created a series of works as a tribute to him, these were called “Polar Coordinates for Ronnie Peterson”...

RP.png

___________________________________

What is it?
It’s pretty simple really, it is what it looks like… graph paper with a simple design on. Stella felt this focused on the technical nature of a racing car. Graph paper represents a strong symbol of two dimension drawing, which contrasts against the curvacious nature of BMW’s batmobile. There’s probably more analysis to do, but in the artists own words, “The resulting colored pattern should be regarded as agreeable decoration”, so I’m not going to overthink it.. It is an agreeable decoration for a racing car!

___________________________________

My Livery:
This one wasn’t fun! I drew up several patterns of squares to import as decals, which was the simple part… sadly, the continuous pattern of straight lines does not lend itself to the VGT’s lumps and bumps, which means the lines were getting heavily distorted. Three or four versions later I felt I had the best compromise. The real car isn’t geometrically perfect with its grid layout, so I’m okay with mine not being perfect.

Getting the line weights to something that works on the car was trial and error… most of the sweeping arcs are actually doubled up and offset slightly, to bolden them up abit. The number, the artists signature and the class sticker are the only other decals. I’d give it 85% to 95% accurate depending on how picky I’m being about the grid lining up as it should.

Ooops, link updated 👍

@Nuschel01 I might have a look this weekend and see if how easy (or difficult) it would be to apply it to the M6.

@Koutch_Pro It was a good day, the ArtCar exhibit was on in London during the 2012 Olympics, which BMW sponsored. Sadly the venue wasn't ideal and I didn't go properly equipped for taking photos in that environment. It was a multistory car park, the top floors were full of natural light which was a bit of a pain as shooting in a low light area with a bright area as a background is/was tricky... it got worse on the lower floors as there wasn't enough light at all, so I had to do longer exposures, which is tough without a tripod if you don't have steady hands.

No promises, I've still got lots of other Art Cars to do yet! :D But I assume you mean the Gr4 M4?

Yes, indeed ! I like switch around between my TicTAc version, @Venari his Alex Calder version and a Ekris livery. I really understand that making all these liveries is a heap of work.
