- Miscellaneous
Applied all updates from the Japanese and USA re-releases of the game to all discs for that region.
Applied all updates from the European release of the game to the Japanese and USA versions.
Prevented the modified game from loading incompatible save files by using a separate save file to the original game, also allowing vanilla and plus to coexist on one memory card.
Added a simple diagnostic page accessible from Game Status that lists the game and mod version.
Fixed the random track selection process failing to ever pick Apricot Hill (manufacturer events, Event Synth, etc.).
Fixed the track maps for Tahiti Road and Tahiti Dirt Route 3 missing an outline in certain configurations.
Fixed the pre-race car setup menus not showing the Turbo section for cars with a stock turbo but no upgrades, which now allows intercooler parts to be unequipped from the Vector W8.
Fixed all rotary engines in cars being labelled as 'Rotar2' / 'Rotar3' instead of '2-Rotor' / '3-Rotor'.
Retranslated the 'Already' and 'Nothing' tuning shop text in GT mode in several languages as 'Purchased' and 'Not available', for accuracy and to remove invalid characters (thanks to Submaniac, SuperFrizzio, and Paiky).
Retranslated the 'Free' event power restriction text in GT mode in several languages as 'Any' for accuracy, and remove abbreviations (thanks to Submaniac, SuperFrizzio, and Paiky).
Fixed license tests incorrectly listing the launch speed as mph instead of km/h when set to UK English (PAL only).
Fixed the wheel shop displaying a nonsensical error message in US English when trying to enter with a banned car (US only).
Fixed the error messages for the N/A and Turbo event restrictions being swapped (US / PAL only).

  • How do I install the mod? Apply EITHER the Light or Complete .xdelta patch for that disc to a valid copy of any Gran Turismo 2 disc. Tutorials on how to apply xdelta patches are widely available on Youtube or elsewhere.
  • Does the mod work on a real Playstation console? Yes, it should, and the PAL version has been extensively tested on a Playstation.
  • Can I use my normal GT2 savegame? No, the patched game is not compatible with savegames from the base game, older GT2+ versions, or other patches, due to the added and updated content.
  • Are you going to remove the GT40 opponent in the Historic Cup? No, this was intentionally added by PD and is not a bug. It's also an interesting and characterful part of the game.
  • Are you going to add the Elise 'Soft Top'? No, this is an unfinished and broken version of the Elise already in the game.
  • Are you going to add drag racing? No, almost nothing exists of the drag racing mode and it was probably never created in the first place.
  • Are you going to add the CLK-GTR? No, this car never existed in any known version of the game, just a handful of renders. While the recreations of that car are impressive, just restoring the unfinished content from PD will already hit the limit of what the game can handle, before considering other mods to include. Check out Submaniac's GT2.1 mod for somewhere that the CLK GTR will be included however.
  • Are you going to add (any other car)? Unlikely, as this mod is focused on fixing bugs and restoring unfinished content from Polyphony rather than creating new cars from scratch, due to the relatively low limit on how many new cars can be added before the game crashes. As of beta 7, almost every single unfinished car is included, with some very similar near-duplicates omitted on purpose.
  • Are you going to add Special Stage Route 11? If it ever becomes possible to modify GT1 track models to work in GT2, then maybe. I am not actively investigating this possibility however.
  • Are you going to change the performance of racecars to more closely match the real cars? Yes, if enough solid real data can be found on the cars. However, most race teams are very secretive, so the answer may be no for many cars.
  • Are you going to add a 60FPS mode? No, this is not possible to do with this mod, and the PS1 console does not have enough power to run the game at that framerate. Mods or cheats that alter the framerate also break replays and ghost cars.
  • Are you going to increase the garage size? No, this is not possible, as there is only space in memory and in the savegame for 100 cars, and adding any more will overwrite critical data.
  • Are you going to change (a certain particular detail)? If it is a bug, yes. Otherwise, probably not, as this mod is focusing on bug fixes and restored content. There are many hundreds of fixes still to be done, so I don't have enough time to change arbitrary other things. However, all of the mod tools used are openly available so these changes can be made as other mods by other people.
  • How do I tell if the mod is working correctly? In GT Mode, click the trophy icon in Game Status for a diagnostic page. Alternatively, in the Complete version only, check the Demonstration section in the Replay Theater.

All known GT2 discs are currently supported, and are all patched to have the same amount of content and features as the final PAL release.

Please select the appropriate version of the mod below for your version of the game.

Please do not distribute pre-patched disc images of this modification, in order to avoid any potential legal issues or incorrect association with piracy that could result in its removal and/or an end to development.

Hi :)

Really a much great work!,congratulations and thank you for releasing this! :D

Great job! I hope you fix the Escudo's super handling properties too. This way the real circuit cars will be the best at what they are supposed to be and the Escudo can be the dirt trial master it's meant to be.

Good job! I hope that the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C3 is fixed. It is 1982 in the game, but the Stingray C3's production has finished in 1976. And I think that the Peugeot 306 S16 RM's should be named to Peugeot 306 Maxi.

Great job! I hope you fix the Escudo's super handling properties too.

I don't think its handling is a bug, PD intended it to be that way. It and the Cultus also have a special version of the dirt tyres that no other cars get, presumably to make it better on dirt.

The C3 ingame is a 1980-82 body with the integrated front and rear spoilers, but a 1978 engine and the old Stingray name. If I do anything to it, I'll probably remove the Stingray part of the name and bump the power up slightly to 1981 spec.

As for the 306 RM, no - the menu names for cars are shared between all bodies for that car, so the stock 306 would be named the Maxi too.

Well, if not mistaken, the Peugeot 306 Maxi Rally Car is based on Peugeot 306 S16.
I think that the Alfa Romeo 155 Touring Car should be renamed to Alfa Romeo 155 BTCC '94, since the car is based on Gabriele Tarquini's Alfa Romeo 155 BTCC '94.

What I mean is that it's not possible to name a RM differently to the base car - the name in the menu is the same for the 306 S16 no matter which bodyshell it has, just with an [R] added if the body is not the stock one. Replay / high score names are per body though.

Great work, loved your Forza work and now seeing GT2 get some love is awesome.

Just wondering, what's the easiest way of checking that the patch is installed properly? Some kind of noticeable difference that's quick to check?

Yeah, you may be right but I suppose that's one thing that makes GT2 that much more of a horrible excuse for a simulator. In real life the GT-One, R390 GT-1, and GT40 Gulf Race Car would absolutely outperform the Escudo and Cultus on a circuit. Granted the Escudo would win on the Hill Climb. They also made the mistake of making the Escudo the best Rally car in general when in all reality it was a pure PPHC machine. All one has to do is research the 'greatest rally cars in history' or most 'successful rally cars in history' to see that the Escudo is not on those lists most of the time. GT2 is just a prime example of how inferior a game with bad even to it's day physics and intense uncompromising Japanese car favoritism. How any sane car enthusiast can enjoy such a utterly and absolutely flawed piece of work is beyond me.

Just wondering, what's the easiest way of checking that the patch is installed properly? Some kind of noticeable difference that's quick to check?

There's a CRC32 hash for the patched game in the readme file you can match against, otherwise you can check the Audi dealership to make sure that the S4 is 50,000Cr to buy instead of 28,000Cr or whatever it is normally. The quickest way to check the Complete-specific changes is to see how many paint colours the C43 AMG has in the Mercedes dealership - the default game just has silver and black.

Nice one, I'll give it a go next time I start GT2. 👍

Give it a break, man. that's the PS1 with 1MB or RAM you're talking about, not a supercomputer ^^'
At a time where games had next to no content, much less decent physics, this was literally the best they could get, and many people, including me, have spent so much time playing it that of course we'll think it's a great game, and it was. Now of course if you're going at it with a 2018 simulation player, Thrustmaster wheel user mindset, it's bound to be god-awful. But that's not the point. It did its best, with Japanese people programming it, most of whom had probably little actual car knowledge and would blindly code what was asked of them, so just go easy on them. You can't ask europeans to know all about american cars, or americans to know a lot about japanese cars. They wanted to impress, and they only had so much budget to make the game, so they went where the car models they could add were the cheapest to find: their own home of Japan. I can't blame them for that one bit. In fact, even if JDM cars make almost half of the game's content, what's there for european and american cars have enough never-seen-afterwards gems for me to say that's it's still decent.

I understand what your saying but I still find it hard not to fault them on their job with GT1 and GT2. Honestly for the longest time GT2 was my fav GT until I could not tolerate the unbalanced nature of the cars anymore. I mean it's a good game in it's own right I suppose.

You've got to also remember one key thing about Gran Turismo 1 and 2. If it wasn't for these two games, a lot of other games might not have come to be. Gran Turismo paved the way for racing games unlike any other game did before it. Need For Speed surely didn't give us the content and the quality that we got from GT. Yeah the game is dated compared to todays standards, but back then it was as accurate a game you would get for the genre. It was more simulation than NFS or Test Drive or any other game for that matter.
Flaws or not it was a remarkable game. It helped introduce people to cars outside of their domestic market. It also introduced new people to the world of cars, myself included. In fact, look to the left and see just how much Gran Turismo influenced my car enthusiast lifestyle.

I honestly do agree with you for the most part. While I have always loved cars GT DID also have an impact on me in introducing me to a variety of cars. As a matter of fact it was GT2 that lead me on to Mazda RX-7's which are now my favorite cars in the world.

Maybe because you’re searching for “rally cars”, and the Escudo isn’t a rally car.

900 bhp beats 295 bhp, just deal with it.

As said the Escudo ends up producing faster lap times on ALL dirt courses(rally courses) in GT2 not just the PPHC(as it was meant for.) This in turn expresses the car as superior to all on dirt, tarmac, and a circuit in the game. That's entirely unbalanced deal with it.. yeah deal with the common sense.

Alright, common sense time:

Suzuki Escudo : 981hp/900kg, 0.917 power to weight ratio
vs
Subaru Impreza WRC '99 in GT2: 476hp/1230kg, 2.584 ptw ratio
(vs Toyota GT-One Race Car in GT2: 672hp/900kg, 1.339 ptw ratio
vs 2018 Formula 1 specs (found here and here): 1000hp/660kg, 0.66 ptw ratio and outrageous downforce)
In terms of pure numbers, the Escudo destroys them all except of course the F1, but that one I put there just as a reference.
I didn't mention downforce as I don't have the actual numbers, but I know the Escudo in-game has about as much aero as any other LM race cars, while the Impreza being a lower-tier race car has less max downforce.
I cannot tell any IRL values because obvious reasons. My guess is that the GT-One would have a little more if not equal downforce with the Escudo. What gives it more grip in the turns on the road, is it's suspension setup and lower center of mass.

Consider the game's rally tracks:
Tahiti Maze
Smokey Mountain North
Smokey Mountain South
Deep Forest Roadway
Pike's Peak Uphill/Downhill
Tahiti Dirt Route 3

All of them have wide roads, some with, some without major jumps. All of them except Taithi Maze have long straights/fast parts.

IRL, any power level on a Rally Car will only be able to go at certain speeds in the turns, because dirt has low grip, roads are very narrow, at most 2 cars wide and sometimes barely 1 car width, and you don't always run at speeds that require strong downforce to get better times, so the Escudo and Cultus should not be any better than WRC cars. If anything, the massive power spike due to the turbo spool lag would be massively dangerous and make the car extremely unstable.
However, considering GT2's rally tracks have wide roads and fast sections, then power becomes a factor to consider. And so the Escudo wins on dirt.

However, as for the asphalt, well it's true that LM machines are built for the road. And they would most likely beat the Escudo (let's not consider that you could set its suspension and downforce for track racing) in the turns. However, the Escudo is once again 981hp while the LM cars run at ~600 on race days. So in the straights, and with the proper setup, the Escudo would be able to blast past them any day when accelerating, and be just a tad slower at top speed due to a worse air penetration profile.

That's what logic tells me.

However, GT2 is not real life. The Escudo in GT2 doesn't have the turbo spool lag that it should have (apparently) and it is OP for sure. It beats anything effortlessly. And that's unrealistic, but i'll never hold that against GT2 because I fully understand the limitations imposed by the hardware and time constraints.
Plus, the game is way more fun than any pure simulation out there even today (and that's my personal opinion of course) and i'm perfectly happy to come back to it and GT1, GT3, GT4, because they're fun to play with.

I hope that this is enough common sense to break the off-topicness of the Escudo debate.

I guess that’s what 900 bhp does. Why do you think that rally cars should be faster?

My reasoning for that is in the basis of car design. When a track car or any high performance car is designed and built for a competition of a certain class or category it's done so with a specific properties suited for said task. The Escudo is a wonderous piece of mechanical engineering yes but it's strictly engineered for a limited scope of tasks.

All I'm saying is one wouldn't take an LMP or old Class C machine to a rally course or what have you.. just like one would not want to take the Escudo or any off road trial machine to compete with the TS050 for example on Circuit de la Sarthe. These machine have their purposes built properties and perform those with flying colors.. there is no perfect all powerful car but GT2 has one(unintentionally) and we know what It is.

Sorry for the attitude but it's a design error I can't overlook. I'll leave the topic alone though, you guys peace out ok.

And what properties does Pikes Peak have that make such a car unsuitable for racing on dirt circuits?

I'm just gonna throw that out there, but Pike's Peak is 100% asphalt nowadays, but 2011 still had a Suzuki SX4 go up it~ So it's basically a "standard" hillclimb now, therefore, by proxy, the Escudo is suited for asphalt races as well, in a way~

@Gamerjman19 The name should be corrected in Pez's mod, and I agree for the color... in a way. I find that orange to be pretty ugly, so I wouldn't mind to keep the car bronze :P

Bit of a suggestion, even though it has all the chances of being denied, but when i've thought out about it, i've always thought it was odd how the 400GT Venturi has engine upgrades that do basically jack, compared to the 300 that goes from around 210 hp to roughly 630. Could that possibly be amended so that the 400GT isn't comparatively useless?

Could be doable. It's true the 400's turbo is weak as an upgrade. Could add a stage 2 that gets it up to about 650hp methinks. So that it doesn't become better than the 600.

You need a certain program whose name closely resembles the .xdelta extention to patch the base game. I'm unwilling to say more because I don't want the mods to ban-hammer me to oblivion. Just do a quick google search and hopefully it'll be self explanatory.
Also, don't forget, it's a patch for PAL. It won't work on other releases.

The 400 does get a racing mod meaning downforce and better handling. The 400GT regardless of having less hp is still faster. I can win the Red Rock Valley with it and the Rome 2 hour endurance etc with the 400GT the 600 Bi Turbo would have more a difficult time with those races. Granted I do agree... 600+ hp would be awesome with the 400GT.

Speaking of Venturi.. man I love the cars and is very disappointed that they decided to forgo them in GT3 and GT4.
