To cover all of the previous posts, I have no intention to make arbitrary opponent changes - this is a bugfix mod, not a random design changes mod. I have to retain a strict, focused scope otherwise I'll never finish it.

Another bug to fix: M12 on SSR5 endurance, Xantia on Trial Mountain 30 Laps

That bug only exists in the early US releases and was fixed by PD themselves.

is the bugfix only compatible with save games of vanilla GT2?

also id like to point out that there are some mistakes in the HP of dealerships. for example, the three 3000GT are listed as 274 HP but if you buy them they will have 300+ HP. Im not sure how many of these bugs are.

If i recall correctly, the Light version of GT2+ should be compatible with vanilla saves. The Complete version however, is not.

As for dealership figures, they are not inaccurate, they are done on purpose, and reflect the pre-2000 Japan's Gentleman's Agreement where cars weren't to be sold with over 280ps/276hp for regulations. However most of the top end cars like the Supra, Skylines, GTO etc often made more than that once you removed the restrictor used to limit them.

No version is compatible with any other saves.

As mentioned above, the power difference is between what was claimed by the manufacturers and what the cars actually made - PD deliberately implemented this as a feature.

Thanks for your answer. I still think it would be nice if they matched, cause its a pain to find cards for some races this way.

Anyway, another very interesting fix (you could make this one separate) would be to increase drawing distance, cause sometimes is pretty hard to calculate turns that are far away but cannot see them, and the best example I can give is Seattle full course, one of the last turns to the right in which you go at full speed and if you brake when you see it you will crash. Its pretty annoying.

PD: I read the rules about emulation... I have the GT2 original game and a PSX... but it just looks so good in the emulator, thats why I play in it... Basically Im saying this comment isnt about piracy.

Unfortunately draw distance is not something that is easy to modify (or even possible yet), and would cause framerate problems due to the extra drawing required.

I'm 90% sure there is not actual drawing distance in GT2, but rather a "controlled spawn" of the track assets. By that, I mean PD used trigger zones in which as long as the play is inside those zones, the game will render certain portions of the track. This allows for the most powerful optimization in rendered graphics on screen compared to actual culling. They also combine this with an extremely strict off-camera culling. You might have seen those artifacts when you watch a video played on an emulator that supports widescreen hacks in games.

So I think that the only way to increase GT2's "drawing distance" is to fully crack the track formats in order to extend the trigger zones a little. However, GT2's framerate is already on the line with all the details PD put, so I'm not sure you should expect anything much. Also we're very, very far from being able to do anything with track meshes for now, so yeah.

I 100% understand that the scope of this project revolves around fixing things rather than new content. That being said, I'm curious as to the compatibility of GT1 content that might not be in GT2, or if there even is such a thing.

Also - does GT use standard Sony TMD models and TIM images?

Intercompatibility is close to none. However similar GT1 and 2 look, they're actually very different internally.

Pez will elaborate a little more i'm sure, but PD almost never uses standard formats. The cover menu screen is .tim as well as a few other little things, but most files are slightly edited to fit their needs.

I am intending to port as much of the cut GT1 content as I can as part of the restoration process - currently so far most of the special colour cars, the NSX-R LM GT2, and the Chaser LM were portable or recreatable without extreme amounts of effort. Some were as simple as copying the GT1 colour palettes over, some were almost complete remakes using the old and new palettes as references.

GT1 and GT2 have quite similar car model formats, enough to be able to port over vertices, faces, and texture mapping, however the reflection and shadow data is a complete unknown, which stops model ports being fully possible. The texture formats however are virtually identical between the two other than having the data structures in them rearranged a bit, so texture ports are trivial.

Unfortunately however, the track model formats are different, so no chance of Route 11 returning any time soon. Track textures are pretty similar though.

Physics data is very different in terms of the containers, but some of the part data is close enough to recreate major features like engines and transmissions.

Car sound files are basically identical - I believe Submaniac has said that PD barely changed the format until GT Sport.

In terms of standard formats, there are tons of TIM files - all of the track textures, the car logos, some of the menu backgrounds, the cursor, lots of other little bits and pieces. The other image formats are all pretty similar too, albeit in the same way that all 4-bit texture formats have similar palettes and bitmap data. There are no TMD models that I've seen however.

Bummer/awesome.

Bummer in that we can't resurrect SSR11 in GT2, awesome that most everything else seems doable. I've been away from GT a long time, but have been modding games for 20 years (I'm old for a gamer). I got really excited to see this restoration mod and that GT4P JP tracks work in GT3. I realize that ones a bit further off, but for me personally GT3 is a much more enjoyable game than GT4. I can't quite put my finger on why, but GT4 just lost something for me and I became a Forza guy after that.

I'm hoping to put some time into playing through GT2+ as I really miss a few of those tracks, particularly Red Rock Valley Speedway. This gives me a reason to break out some older hardware and have some fun. Hoping to see the same kind of treatment for GT3 in the future. If you're anything like me you probably have it planned but there are 1,000 other things to do before then. :P

You're spot on there! Just in the world of GT alone, I'm looking into various things in each game from GT1 to GT4, on top of writing tools to work with each type of file I figure out. If I didn't have to sleep and go to work I'd be on this stuff 24 hours per day just to catch up with all of the plans I have.

Yeah car sound format is the same between GT1 and GT2, I think GT3 also is the same, GT4 until I see one its files I can only assume it's the same format, and GT5 introduced a slighly edited version of the .es format called esgx which just has a few more sets of data. But it's 90+% identical.

It's against the rules of the site to explain how to patch the game. It's not possible to translate the game either. It's not possible to do more han edit track textures, so no new tracks or porting of tracks possible. Motorsport Land is too broken to be usable anywhere else than arcade in time trials. I don't know what you mean by the things about the GT-One and the R390s but the race versions of these cars were Racing Modifications back in the demos. They were made standalone in the final game, that's it. I don't know what you mean by "car shop" but if you mean adding more manufacturers, not possible. Creating new cars for the game is currently not possible either, so no porting or recreating NFS cars either. The only type of modding possible is through modifying existing models in order to resemble something else.

Curious why the PAL version is used as the base as it's 50hz and NTSC is 60hz. JP version also has the original score rather than liscened American music. NTSC thus seems like a better version to use as the base.

Graphical enhancements can be handled via emulators and should be kept separate. Cheat codes can make the game run at 60fps, and then overclocking can ensure it stays stable to that. PGXP is a feature to eliminate texture wobble. Other cheat codes can make the game load more opponets. There could be codes to increase draw distance.

Also have you guys thought about making a thread on romhacking.net?

PAL is the most recent build for GT2 and so requires less work to patch things that were done by PD in 1999. It's also the most readily available copy of the game for pez2k considering he's in the UK and had his copy to start on. The game cannot run at a true 50/60fps, as its internal engine slows the game down to a crawl. The game also cannot load more than 5 opponent and will crash if you try, no matter what. It's not made to support more, and only the early prototype of GT1 is able to load up to 13 cars at once on certain tracks (with obvious problems already). Increasing the draw distance is next to impossible as track portions are programmed to spawn depending on player position through a bunch of trigger zones, on top of having some culling. So even if you can alter the distance culling, you will not see more track at once. Plus, it would overload the engine and cause slowdowns. ePSXe 2.0 and later versions can also reduce the wobbling present due to the integer precision of coordinate calculations, that's up to the player to decide what to play on.

As for making a thread elsewhere, I believe pez is against it so long as GT2plus is in development so that any and all bug can be reported in a single place without having to scout multiple place for them. but that's up to him.

This is PAL running at true 50fps through codes. Note that it also removes particle effects such as smoke, likely because they are programmed to appear a certain amount of frames.

PAL is effectively 'v1.3' with more content and more bugs fixed than any of the NTSC releases. That made initial development quicker, and the plan is to back-port as much of the PAL content as possible to the other releases now that I understand how it fits together. The mod is not going to remain PAL-only, the plan has always been to support all releases.

PAL also supports five languages, which expands the number of people who can play it.

As for RomHacking, I have considered it but not gotten around to it as I'm not sure how much interest there would be. When the next release is ready I may create a thread there or at least post the release.

Is there any way for the average user such as myself to replace the soundtrack from the PAL version with the one out of the NTSC version? I really dig your mod but I grow up playing the NTSC game, so having the right soundtrack to go along is a big part of it for me.

The only person that ever been able to edit the game's soundtrack was @B_rad88! but he's been missing for a while and has never shared with us how he did it. For now, we don't know how to edit it. It hasn't been Pez's focus either for now so he hasn't taken a look into it.

Swapping the audio files is easy enough, but I believe the length of each track is hardcoded somewhere so it'll start and end partway through a track instead of playing them correctly. I will have a US version of the mod out before too long though.

Oh cool. Thanks. NTSC 60hz is a pretty big deal for me. Plus the original timeless JP Fusion score fits the game much more than angsty 90's rock.

As for RHDN, you should probably submit it there once it is done.

I've been looking at this thread for some time and I am just in awe of the talent of you guys. I myself have been working on my own Flash racing game based on GT/Forza. It's been a project for a few years now.

Anyway, this is still very impressive. I recently dug up my old "modded" PSP GO and loaded up GT2 (I do have a physical copy, so shut up). Feels good playing this classic again, hopefully I can get this mod to work with it too :)

Good night! First of all I would like to congratulate you all on the work done on GT2 Plus, you have made not only mine but all GT2 fans come true. Thank you very much!!
I started playing Alpha Complete today and I have some topics to show you:
- The Name on the garage car list still appears as "[R] Daisin Silvia GT (J) '99" instead of "[R] Daishin Silvia GT (J) '99"
- Is there how to increase the capacity of the garage or is it limited to 100 cars?
- Is there how to increase the difficulty of A.I.? //P.S .: A.I. Catch up sucks!
I want to play as much as I can to see if there are more details that can be changed or corrected.
Thanks again. (Using Google translator, greetings from Brazil)

The garage limit is hardcoded at 100 and isn't alterable. The name is most likely an overlook and will be fixed by he next version once Pez sees this and records it in his to-do list ^^. As for the AI difficulty he won't touch it, but it's the main focus of my work in progress mod. Coming... uh. At some point in time xD

Thanks for the feedback - the replay names and garage names are totally separate and in the currently released version I've fixed the replay names but not the garage names, which have already been fixed for the next release.

The garage limit can't be increased as the other player stats like money are stored right after the garage list, so any extra cars would break all of that.

The AI difficulty can be modified, but the easiest suggestion is just to drive a slower car - there are lists around showing the exact power, weight and tyres that each AI car uses, so you can tune your car to match them. They're usually a long way below the power limit.

I have an idea relating to the garage limit, but it may be a long shot.

Have you tried making a separate/duplicated garage list screen to extend the garage limit? I would assume that extra coding may be involved to connect the two garages together.

I remember hearing that one of you managed to make extra menu screens for the cut car content while making them accessible through duplicating those arrow buttons? This made me think that it could be do-able later on?
