My personal computer has ran into a big problem. I was trying to watch a video and my computer froze while loading it. Consiquently i had to crash it.

When i restart my computer I get a backweb and explorer error which keep coming up. I close out of the explorer error, my computer somewhat restarts (the screen goes blank and it reloads my desktop) and then the error will come back up again. I've ran my virus cleaner, spyware cleaner, and a program called CC Cleaner that fix's errors to no avail.

I can still somewhat get around my computer and am trying to backup as much as i can, just in case of the inevitable.

I wasn't doing anything but trying to watch a video so why is this happening? Please help me

have you run the windows repare program, because it sounds as though something is damaged and not a virus, I could be wrong of course, but that is what it sounds like.

Put your windows disk in and reboot the pc and go in as if you were installing a fresh copy of windows and it will give you the option of reparing it. You will need the admin password to do this, once in it runs from DOS and you will be able to run various things to check wether its broken or not. good luck.

edit:

just looked for backweb LINK to some backweb problem hope that helps.

Just to tell you, im running a windows millenium. That does sound like a good idea though, i think the install disk has that option.

I have a TON of music that i need to back up, but my dads external is not being recognized. I can't go on the internet either because it won't let me (im using my dads computer right now). I tried defragmenting it but it won't start either.

Im dying inside :(, seriously

Thats what happens when using milenium, I used to have it on my old pc I soon got rid and im glad I did. Its may be worth starting the pc up in safe mode and then conection your dads external drive. that may solve some issues.

Windows Millenium as in Windows ME ?...

I'd take the HDD out, put it in your dads computer and do a backup of your "music" collection immediately... To me, it sounds like the HDD from ME is crapping itself...

Btw. If needs be, there's a cheap program called "GetDataBack" that has saved my behind more than once !... I believe it'll run you US$ 50 or so - and it beats the hell out of $1000+ programs !.. You can find it, and a demo, at http://www.runtime.org/

Thank you guys, I will try that.

Im surprised its gone as long as it has. It originally had windows 98 on it. Im so proud of it :D, lol

EDIT 2: I have it in safe mode, What do i do? It still doesn't recognize my dads external

EDIT: how do you boot is safe mode?, lol

I know its F something

F8..

Thing is - if your HDD IS indeed crapping itslf, it might do more damage than good !..

F8 actually didn't work, i had to press ctrl and am now in safe mode.

I just don't know what to do now. I still can't access the internet and it stillw ont recognize the external

dont know then if you are no able to get anything while in safe mode. are you able t oget on the internet while logged onto the pc normally, it may be worth it as a quick solution to stash every thing onto a free online storage place.

LINK sound like drastic measures need to be taken sorry but im running out of ideas, not sure how else you can back up your data.

Would scandisk or defragmenting help at all?

what safe mode is allowing me to do is use scandisk in advanced mode which i couldn't do in regular mode, and i'm hoping it will let me defragment. I just wish i could get online because i could transfer my music files through the network to my dads

As said earlier, if the HDD is disintegrating, you risk movind sound stuff onto bad places of the disk...

I don't recall ME having safe mode with networking capabilities.. Sorry..

G.T
Have a USB Stick available? Some CD/DVDs you can burn files to?

yes, but a usb stick cant hold 10 gigs of music. I have every file on my ipod, but there's no way to go from ipod, to computer.

right now it is running scandisk and has been for a while. Im hoping that will fix it.

What I mean with the USB stick is when you've crammed as much music onto it as possible, then you can go put them onto your Dad's PC, then go back to your PC and put some more files music files onto it, and do it again, until you've done everything.

It'll take a while but it's better than nothing.

I didn't think of that. Thank you, lol.

Dude if you have all your music on your ipod, you can get it off very easy onto another pc. all you need is a program called EPHPOD (link below), it even puts them into their own folders just like you have them on ur pc at the moment.

ephpod one of the best programmes for ipod for windows and linux, just like itunes but more functions.

so it will be able to take all the music off my ipod, sweet!

I will still try to transfer the songs through my 1 gig flashdrive to my dads computer though. Right now i am letting it defragment (its at 51%) and after that i will see how it does regularly.

The bad part about this is that my family doesn't have much extra money, and my computer is basically my life. I will eventually get my dads computer once he gets a new one, but that is nowhere in the near future :indiff:.

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help me out here and im giving you all +rep's.

If your hard drive has had it, I doubt defrag will do much to help. I don't know what's wrong with your pc, but if it originally had 98 and you're a pretty heavy user it's more than likely to start throwing up problems with atleast one component.

Assuming your hard drive has died in some way, it might just be better to give up and go buy a new one. It's been in there since 1998, so it might be an idea to upgrade anyway.

However, you can always try your best to get it working in its current state. For backing up, you can either attempt it yourself or get your local PC store to do it for you. There will be cost involved though, so watch how much you pay. Or, if all you want is the music off your iPod, use the software already mentioned above. Once you're happy with your backed up data, format the drive and reinstall Windows (take the opportunity and upgrade for the love of god! :P). I'd be very surprised if it was still working in perfect order, though.

Just for the record, the programs that you originally tried to run were pretty much in vain (apart from maybe the virus scanner). CCleaner is just a vacuum cleaner - it's designed to get rid of all the crap (hence the previous name), not fix errors. In my experience it's just thrown out all of my useful cookies.

Hope all that helps in some way or other - it's a pain in the arse when things go wrong. I'll be the first to admit that I generally bail out at any sign of trouble when I've had a PC that long, so I'm not really a great person for troubleshooting when it comes to hardware issues. Of course, it might just be that your OS files have become corrupt, in which case the format + reinstall should fix it.

I would say back up stuff, get a new HDD, and get Windows XP.

Windows ME is about the worst version of windows since 3.0. Its horrible, worthless OS of crap.

40 bucks for an HDD, and Win XP varies on whether you get upgrade, etc. Your problem could just be ME itself... which I would say clean reinstall of the OS... except either windows 98 or XP... just not ME.

I can't stress the ME part enough, if you didn't notice.

lol, ME is not THAT bad. It's ran pretty much fine for me for a LONG time.

I'd say with the use that it has gotten from me, I'm amazed it lasted this long. Especially because its the summer, so it's been used all day, left on all night, used all day, left on all night, etc.... for a good month or more.

My computer, she is alive!!!

After some useless fiddling, my dad just restored the system and i have all my files :D, yay.

I still have to fix some things, and move things around, but other than that im really happy. I just remembered victor the tour guide, if you have had millenium you know who im talking about

Um, ME is that bad, so do what you need to do to get into the 21st century.

If it's running ME but was upgraded from 98, it's probably not enough PC to run XP. You'll need at least 512 MB RAM, and preferably at least a 1GHz processor. Nothing less will do.

As for the USB stick drive, it probably wouldn't have worked with ME unless you already had its drivers installed. ME and older did not recognize external USB drives automatically, as you saw with your dad's drive. Win2000 and newer will, but older versions have to have a driver installed for the drive hardware.

Safe mode will have no networking functions, so of course the Internet wouldn't work.

I'm glad you got it back, but you need to put stuff somewhere safe, soon. This is God's way of warning you to be ready for it to die.

Why weren't any of you guys out for parties and fireworks, anyway?

Oops, now that I look, Diablo and Azuremen are the only US members in the thread. . . .

lol, i do have 512mb of RAM, but that's its maximum upgrade

The problem with the external is that my dad changed its format from one thing that would only allow him to move a maximum of 2 gigs at one time, to ntsc allowing him to move up to 50 gigs in less than a few seconds.

We had a party, but i spent most of my time in my room wanting to kill myself, lol jk. The thing is that today was one of the worst days I've had in a long time. I thought my computer completely crapped out on me, both my bikes tires were punctured (while on a bike ride to relieve some stress from the computer problem), my sisters stupid friend soaked me while i walked past the pool, and later i felt really sick to my stomach (probably because i drank about 10 cans of soda to help me keep my sanity). I couldn't even eat lunch i was so pissed about my computer.

I kinda know how you feel - I get stressed when I have a computer problem too.

As for XP not running on less than 512MB and 1GHz - I used to run it on 256MB and 700Mhz. Turn off all the fancy XP stuff and you'll be OK.

Perhaps you can buy a cheap s/hand computer off e-Bay with XP Home already on it? If you get one from 2002ish it shouldn't be more than $100 (I'm assuming big time here because that'd be the value here, and I'd think they'd be cheaper where you are) and perhaps you could start using that.

There's nothing wrong with second-hand computers - I've been through heaps of them. In fact, I only just bought my first brand-new computer a few weeks ago!

But yes, this incident should be a warning to you to backup any important files you have regularly. The data is most concerning, and if you have a safe copy then it might be less stressful. I backup all the install files I have (of course I have the CDs somewhere... ;)) so that don't have trouble putting those back on. Oh, and email too.

Good luck with your computing future. 👍

Replying to points one at a time:

Your dad's drive is NTFS, not NTSC, that's a television standard, and no, ME won't see that file system.

Bike tires were God's way of punishing you for not upgrading sooner. :sly:

Your sister's stupid friend wants you.

Have you slept any since the 10 cans of soda?

He actually said ntsc, lol. He has a studdering problem sometimes and I tend to finish his sentences, so he said nt and i said sc. He probably didn't hear me right.

Bike tires were gods way of punishing me for sleeping, reading, and watching ipod video in church :sly:

My sisters friend is 12

It actually allowed me to stay up until 4:00AM. The good thing is that I woke up at 11:40AM instead of my usual 6:00AM, so i shouldn't have much of a problem staying up anymore. I want to get back into my routine of going to sleep somewhere around 11:00AM and waking up around 6:00PM.

Imagine that, but having all of your final year of University work sitting on a dying harddrive, that was me three years ago, man it made me feel ill. I went white and my flat mate thought I was going to flip out big time, but a quick search on the library computers I found my solution (wired network) and dumped everything on my flatmates pc and then ditched the HDD. Glad yours is now up and running, and yes EPHPOD lets you just export your music to any pc that has it on, plus it automatically creats them in folders for easy access. very handy.
