Wow what a great race yesterday and to think some people don't like Willow Springs. Yet it offered up some of the best endurance racing this year.
I qualified decent but like many times I moved myself to the last position on the grid. The first 30 minutes of the race I was pushing my car hard and even managed to work my way up to 3rd and I could see 1st & 2nd up ahead. Pushing my car that hard was really eating through RM and my car started to fall off the pace quickly as 4th & 5th got back around me easily on much fresher tires. I decided to put on RH on my 3rd stop and that proved to be a mistake and one I couldn't recover from. After taking a trip through the sand a few times I quickly came back in and swapped out for RM once again leaving me in 10th place where I would remain for awhile.
My strategy now was just like in the beginning to drive the wheels off of it and try to start chasing down 9th
@Cold Warrior. Not an easy task as they were turning lap times comparable to mine but in about 11 laps I was able to catch and pass 9th as he went into the pits. Next was
@Racer283 who was 6 seconds ahead and held that gap until he pitted so I dove in right behind him and when we came out the gap was down to 4 seconds. The last 30 minutes proved to be the best racing of the night as chasing down
@Racer283 was no easy task but once I did we had some great intense battles swapping positions back and forth. We even had one of the leaders just ride behind us for awhile to let us battle it out. Thank you for that.
With about 6 laps to go racer jumped into the pits for a quick stop but I decided to take my chance and stay out. My tires were shot from trying to catch racer and the from racing him. The 2 second I gained on him on our last pitstop together would come back to haunt me as I was running out of fuel and had to switch to FM 4 for the last two laps.
I see
@Racer283 gaining 2 seconds a lap after his last stop and half way through the next to last lap he came back around me with ease. I tried to hold on but with all 4 tires bright red and .7 fuel going Into the last lap it was over for me. I crossed the finish line with no grip left, .1 fuel remaining and a big smile on my face.
Even though my strategy didn't work as planned it sure set me up for some of the best racing I've had in awhile.
