Opinion on the Mazda 787B in GTS?

Hello. I, like a lot of people I'm sure, was really excited for the Mazda 787B to be added to GTS' roster come update 1.23. I was able to take it for a quick spin around Le Mans since the update hit:

I immediately found the experience to be rather strange. I remember in GT5 and 6, this car was horrifying to drive. It had a chassis that was... not capable of handling the power it had. The tyres had grip, but would start slipping early if not babied. The 5 speed gearbox would top out frequently even without slipstream on the Mulsanne Straights. In GTS, I find the chassis to be impeccably strong, never showing signs of complaint even when trying to put down massive power out of corners. The tyres and downforce likewise don't give much issue. As can be seen in the video my 787B was bottoming out when going over some kerbstones at Le Mans with stock settings, which I find absurd. But, overall it is a much, much easier and pleasant drive than in GT6.

Oh, and, is it just my imagination, or is the 787B the one car that sounds worse in GTS than it did in GT6?

Real Car:

Even when I rev the car out to 10,000rpm, it doesn't seem to have the same high pitched wail that is present in the real car. Overall the GTS version sounds a lot more dull and muted, from both cockpit and replay cameras.

Am I mistaken, or can others corroborate what I said? Which rendition of the car would you say is more true to life? Any other thoughts on the car as a whole?

The only thing I find annoying with the 787B is the Livery Editor. I can't put any decals onto the hood without them turning invisible. The editor shows they are there by making the decals flash as I'm editing them but they just simply don't appear at all when I share my livery. Everything else about the 787B I love. I never got the chance to play GT5 and GT6 since I didn't own a PS3 so I've pretty much gone from GT4 straight to GTS.

I'm really enjoying it so far. The 787B was always going to be a fun car and blasting round Sainte-Croix and Circuit de la Sarthe for a few laps was great. As others have said, there is a little understeer but that's no issue as such.

The sound is disappointing however. It has definitely got worse since GT6 as have a few others. When it is idling there is no brap-brap-brap at all. That is what the car is known for. At times it sounds like a powerful motorbike. In my opinion, the sound from GT6 sound have been brought over to GTS. Compare it to Assetto Corsa now...

Delighted to have it back in GT though.

I think it's safe to say that the general consensus is that the car has sound issues on 1.23. I'm glad, because it means my hearing isn't gone yet.

Also, while there definitely is merit in the argument that I'm judging the car sounds based on a TV speaker, and thereby hampering my experience, I still think it doesn't discount my argument entirely, as I have used the same TV for GT5, 6, and Sport, and the car definitely sounded more true-to-life in GT5 and 6 even on my TV speakers than in Sport. Also, with PS4 share, I was able to play the video back on my computer (hooked up to a Harman Kardon Aura Studio 2), and it still sounds like garbage, especially in comparison to the real life video.

I get that it isn't fair to judge car sounds on my TV, and honestly, the PS4's recording feature does leave a lot to be desired. I'm willing to admit that much. And thus the question I pose is, on more sophisticated sound systems, does the 787B in Sport magically sound better/ more realistic, in comparison to the real life video?

Thanks for all the input guys! I... didn't even notice the lack of brappage somehow, HAHA!

I am quite dissapointed in the sound, first of all the quad rotor idle is no where to be heard, it doesn't feel like the car contains a quad rotor engine at all sometimes.
Second of all the sound of the downshifts also lacking in comparison to the actual car IRL.

Last of all, the reverb in the replay cams just sound like an echo chamber (like driving in a tunnel) it does not get louder as the car approaches.
It only gets "loud" when the car is already passing by (doppler effect).

From all that I posted by biggest grind is the lack of the quad rotor idle sound.

I mean even the Mazda LM55 has the idle so what the heck PD and Kaz!

the mazda 787b is one of my favourites in this game. Its lightning fast, super nice to drive, amazing sound (maybe not exactly this screaming noise like in real but still very good), supergood looking. Thats just a porn, driving that piece of awesomeness

Wasn’t that true in real life as well? That the 787B lacked speed and only won because of its impeccable reliability?

It also won, somewhat hilariously, based on it's astonishing fuel economy. One of the weird things about a rotary engine, coming from someone who owns and races one in real life, is that it is woefully inefficient on road use. Put it on a track against something of equivalent power and performance (petrol, not diesel) and it is weirdly similarly efficient, if not more so. Couple that with an engine that has no valves etc. then it actually makes a great endurance race engine.

Sadly the FIA banned it shortly after as most people here will know... :(

When it comes to lack of overall speed compared to the likes of the Sauber and Jag, it’s not surprising. At Le Mans 1991 it was lapped multiple times by the leading cars until the lead cars succumbed to problems one by one.

As for sound, games can only do so much to replicate the real thing. Unfortunately for the 787B its sound is so loud that I don’t think it’s possible to replicate that. You can probably replicate its tone at least, but overall volume of it? That’s limited by your Audio system and recording equipment.

I mean the car was loud enough that I think one of the drivers later on became deaf in one ear.

But I think PD is in the ballpark for this car’s audio.

I gave the 787B a go in the 'Ring and here are my thoughts about it:

Honestly the car feels a lot easier now to drive in GTS compared to both GT5 and GT6. In fact it reminds me of how it handled back in GT3. Also of all the Group C cars I've driven in the game, the 787B is by far the car that I had the most fun with.

As for the sound, I might be in the minority but I like the new sound of the 787B. Feels more aggressive compared to GT6 (I even had speakers on) but it still needs more aggression.

So overall the car is nice. A nice improvement over the experience I had with the 787B back from GT5 and GT6.

I don't think it's a loudness issue, it's a tone issue. The real 787B sounds like a good baker's dozen of banshees screaming at you as it flies by, but the GTS 787 sounds like they could only afford one banshee. The GTS car also has a lot of engine growl coming through from an outside perspective which I don't hear on real replays. The engine note is mostly that ghostly high-end from the outside.

Try increasing depth and/or angle. There's a few cars this happens on, Toyota FT1 Gr3 for example.

Just listened to Assetto Corsa, Forza, Gt Sport, and the real thing. Wouldn't say Assetto Corsa is the bench mark. AC and Gt are closer to the real thing. Forza is behind both.

It isn't perfect, but it doesn't sound like garbage
