I'm having a problem with my PC, it's been happening on and off for a while but it was only an annoyance at the time, recently it's started happening more often and it's become more than a simple annoyance.

When I switch the PC on, normally it goes through the BIOS and then loads Windows, what it's started doing more often than working properly is going through BIOS and then instead of loading Windows I just get a black screen and nothing happens. If I restart the PC I get the start as normal, last known good configuration and three safe mode choices, it always works in any of the safe mode options but it seems random when I select the start as normal or last good configuration options. It sometiems works, but most of the time it just goes to the black screen and Windows never loads.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and any help would be appreciated.

No software/hardware changes I can think of barring my graphics card, I've recently installed a new graphics card and the drivers for it, but I had the problem before the new card went in. Other than that I don't think theres any programs I've added/deleted that I can think of. It's really strange because sometimes it loads fine, sometimes it doesn't, it used to load fine 90% of the time, now it's more 50/50.

If it does not start loading Windows , the problem lies in your bootstrap partition , that's where the last known is stored , heavy viruses target that zone .
It is therefore not looking rosy , ule either have to re-install windows or have a look at the partition itself w/ an external dos load at boot . IMO it is not the drivers as Windows will attempt to boot even if there is driver bottlenecking at startup , thusly you would not be likely to get a BLACK SCREEN . Using safe mode etc , accesses the unwritable address in the eprom flash at startup but its not a fulltime situation isit?
Hope tis has helped Live$Speed and also hope this don't muck up ure NewYear celebrations !
Laters guy .

I would still say it's a virus. If it just suddenly started doing this (not starting up) then it most likely is. If it was a progression (slow-down startup<sometimes won't boot<black screen often<no boot at all) then it could be some kind of hardware failure. I would definetly scan for viruses before you go uninstalling Windows. If you can get it to boot normally, hopefully you know how to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete and go into Processes and delete all unessecary pocesses.

Yeah, I'll have a good look at it on Monday I think, I don't want to get into fixing it now because I'm off out soon and I want to be ready when the taxi comes.

Cheers for the suggestions though guys.

Uninstall most program in the add/remove. & see what it give. Sometime a software really ruin how windows run. Just try that. at worst, use the restore function. It really help.
