Some photos from the game posted by RDK on another thread:
Simply beautiful.

Rather than the cars, I'm looking forward to taking Alpine landscapes on Eiger or Tuscan scenes etc. I was disappointed that Citta di Aria was cut for the same reason.

Anyone else struggling with the concept of this mode? I get photomode in Forza, you can paint your cars there, it makes total sense why you would want to take photos, show them to others, why others would want to see them.... but I dont really get why they built this whole photo travel mode when all of our cars look the same anyway. Why would I want to see someone elses photo of cars that look just like the ones I already own?

I guess Im looking to be sold on what's special about this mode. I dont want to feel like it's a waste, and there must be a good use for it, but whatever it is, it's eluding me right now.

I think GT4 came out with it before Forza. Also, its kind of an art. I mean ok. Ya. The shooting locations, I can understand. (theres only so many car, paint and rim/paint combinations you can make.) But in terms of driving. Well. . . Thats a little different. You'll find that people will take pictures that range from Absolutely beautiful, to the completely WTF. Just yesterday, someone posted a GT4 pic of a Dodge Charger 440 R/T getting the most air I've evr seena car get in a GT game, at Trial mountain, just to reproduce a Dukes of Hazzard moment. So, I wouldn't call the photomode unnecessary. At times maybe a bit odd, but not something that shouldn't be there. Sometimes a still frame works better.

@Daan- thanks for the link. I've only stumbled on to it once and then totally forgot about. Thanks!!!

That's what Im struggling with. To me it does. Without that I dont even get the point of it. Maybe I just need to play around with it and see what it can do. I only bring this up since it's the one mode in this game that seems a little useless.

Whats so useless about taking your own photos and using them as a windows wallpaper?

Not everyone is a good photographer, so not everyone can replicate a nice scenery with a great composition likes others can. Photomode to me is also another way to admire the great graphics.

Just like in real life, anyone can take a photo of a car, but which photos are actually worth putting into magazines?

You'll get it once you have it, specially if you have a passion for photography. This is nothing new, i had a lot of fun in GT4 taking pictures of my cars in action on my favorite tracks.

And why would somebody else' car look like the ones you own, you can paint rims and the body, and through customization it might be lowered with a different exhaust etc. I'm not really into looking at somebody's hello kitty car and comparing it to somebody's ironman car, that's what i do not get.

This is perfect for me, i love cars and photography. I will be able to change f-stops, shutter speeds etc and see how it improves my shot. And folks can learn how camera controls work in real time and in a fun way.

If you think photo-mode is all about your car's paint scheme then you are missing the whole point of photo-mode.

I think it's cool just because I'm someone who likes to change the wallpaper on my PC a lot, that alone will justify its use for me.

Is it easy to create 1920 x 1080 pictures from this mode?

When you pick up a copy of car magazine, most of them show stock looking cars. So are they pointless too? Something tells me you are not a car guy, or no interest in photography and what makes a picture perfect.

Finaly some effing logic. That's what i'v been saying all week long. Whats the use of photomode if all the cars look the same? . Anyways it's late now as we have a brilliant photo mode with no customization option's or some livery editor.

People take photos of the sky... why, when they could Google it? Animals... again, why? Google's got thousands. Even cars, manufacturers usually send out a bunch of shots, yet search around and you'll find plenty of people wanted their own photos of the exact same car. More or less everything in the world has more than one photo of it, even stuff that looks the same.

What I really struggle to understand is that some people presumably don't understand photographs or photography at all.

why anyone would want to add tons of stickers or a bruce lee face to a super car is what I don't get. Just paint it in microsoft paint and I'll be just as impressed if you've got the talent.

Really? I loved Photomode in GT4. After getting 100% completion the only thing left to do was time trial different cars around the Nurburgring and work on photomode/photoshop skills. I got pretty decent at editing photos I took and making them look pretty realistic.

The point of photomode is for people who love cars and are interested in photography. It is basically an entire game unto itself, and through competitions here on GTP it can take up a massive amount of time and creativity. If you don't see the appeal, then just ignore it, there's plenty of other things to do. I likely won't touch it until I've finished the game, but once that happens it will be good for probably an extra few months of solid entertainment.

The only thing that upsets me is that apparently you can't take pictures of standard cars in photo travel :( Oh well.

Those guys can make a normal car look brilliant. Now imagine those brilliant car photos in a higher resolution. That's what photomode is about.

Woo!

...is as any other photomode to create screenshots of a video game as any other which does not appeal to me.

While I love, love me some Photomode, this part of your post just sounds silly. They're all about creating screenshots of a video game ;).

As has already been mentioned, why do car magazines hire photographers to take pictures of the cars they test, when the manufacturer already has stock shots available? Because a good photo is about far more than "is the car unique?".

When you think about it, Photomode is a brilliant marketing tool. It can be used to create some really impressive marketing images, and even better for PD and Sony, communities such as this have a healthy interest in it too. We've created literally hundreds of thousands of images over in the GT4 Photomode Galleries sub-forum, and while some of us use Photoshop or other editing software to improve on the flaws of the old game, some people don't. But these images can spread; I printed out a few of my older GT4 ones (PS'ed a bit, but nothing severe) and have tricked friends when they're postcard sized. Photomode gives PD some free advertisement, similar to someone handing Nike some money to walk around with a big swoosh on their chest. It's a win-win situation; we get to play photographer with some cars we'll never get the chance to (or, with our personal real-life cars, in locales they'll never visit), and PD has a very handy tool. Can't see a problem there!

Now that's how you use photo mode.

Actually, that just highlights how you can use a livery editor.

Dude. It's only a game after all. You think taking a snap shot in photo mode will make you a proffessional photographer? pshhhhh...

I started by taking photos in video games. This made me have interest to do it in real life so I started that. From there, it became an obsession and the next event I go to, I will be shooting for an established drifting blog.

It's not impossible if you work hard enough at it to make it reality :)

Edit with explanation: The way I discovered it, most photomodes in video games give the user a baseline in terms of what setting does this or what setting does that. From there, photomode in a video game provides a free environment which allows the user to experiment with different settings or modes while not having to worry about "did this come out the way I wanted it" or "I hope this is in focus." Using this baseline knowledge of how it works, you can actually apply those fundamentals to real life photography. The transition may be a rocky one, but once the relations are made, that's it.

Awe what no B.Lee? At least that would be interesting to look at, and take some skill to make. Looks like your just showing pictures of a mix of real life liveries which apparently is useless cause those exist in real life.

Hold on, I'm gonna skim back through my post to where I said that...

Wait a minute...

Weird. It seems... I didn't! You're fooling yourself if you don't think people could learn things about real photography through GT's Photomode, though.

(EDIT) Nevermind, Chocobos literally just proved my point, thanks 👍

Sorry, but that looks like absolute ****. Anyone can look at a real race car and try to replicate the letters and numbers. It takes no imagination to come up with those. If you want to see real skill, talent, and imagination, look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5q5h_34V_M

However, I still think racing with it looks tacky, regardless of how good the actual painting is. And as for adding logos and numbers, unless it's a real race car where the body mods allows a nice flow for the design and the design was actually well planned, it's just going to end up looking unprofessional, like those images you posted.

Moreover, photomode isn't solely about showing your "unique" car. You might as well just get a real camera and take a picture of your screen if that's why you only use photomode.

Is this supposed to be a stealth bitchfest about no liveries in GT5? Why be coy about it then, just flat out say it, and say it loud. I cant stand this beating around the bush crap.

Do you think driving a car around a racetrack in a videogame will make you a professional driver?

It did make me a better driver. And with G25 i learned how to drive manual. And i learned how to drift. Because it's all about physics. I guess thats is why they call it the real driving simulator.

EDIT: It did make that spanish guy "i don't remember his name" a proffessional driver :). Moving on..

Considering the cars never stall, there's no way you learned to drive a manual just by playing videogames. Doesn't take a genius to push in the clutch pedal and move the shifter.

To be honest ive seen a lot of kick ass paint jobs in Forza 3, and you didnt exactly pick any of the better ones. Most of those look a little lazy, but I get your point. They are photos taken to show something you actually created, but thats not possible in GT5.

I still will use photomode during race replays, if thats possible, but outside of that I cant really picture myself sitting there positioning cars. I guess for me its just a bonus feature, not something I would personally spend much time in.

These are some better examples of liveries a guy created from scratch that took real effort, and benefited greatly from photomode. I remember talking to him years ago and him telling me a made a fortune off these in the auction house. Everything on this car was custom made, no stock decals or anything.

These are actually from forza 2. He remade them in forza 3 and they looked far better than these, cant find them though.

It would be nice if they patched in a livery editor down the road, but if they dont I could still see myself taking pix of some crazy accidents, so Im sure ill get some use out of it either way.

Sorry dude, the person has skills but it is very tacky to have that on any car, I guess it's just personal opinion. I'd rather have my road car stock, no need to advertise any modification done or not in many cases. My track car can wear the propaganda of the companies paying to advertise, most privateers survive this way.

Then there's the overdone body work, put this thing in a proper wind tunnel and watch it fly..... in pieces.

That video was intense. I once made a NY Giants car that I made a nice fortune off of, but it took me like 3 days to create just something with some giants and nfl emblems on it. I cant imagine how many hours it took that guy to make that. :scared:

That's pretty much what I said in my post right after I posted the link: "However, I still think racing with it looks tacky, regardless of how good the actual painting is."

My point was that the cars Darkpit posted had no talent behind it compared to what the video is showing.
