Sony doesn't sell the consoles to you. Sony sells consoles to retailers. The retailers sell the consoles to end consumers, and it's the retailers that have been failing over and over again to sell consoles to real people instead of scalping groups and bots.

Sure, we can let Sony know we're pissed that they're selling consoles to retailers who don't make much (or any) effort to sell to humans, but ultimately it's not their fault and not much will change the high value international agreements they have with retailers - like Amazon who sell in multiple territories.

Some retailers have been making some effort, but others have been making none. In the UK Game did okay (although the site was frustrating), while Argos, Very, and Currys did **** all. I managed to buy the second one (daughter's 20th birthday gift) through Smyths eventually, and their defence against bots seemed to be making the site as **** as possible.
I went to something called a "shop" on something called a "high Street" and bought one over the counter. On the first day non essential shops could open.

That wont be happening where i live for atleast another year is what Bestbuy was telling me .

By then i will have my better graphics card for my i7 and i can order directly from Microsoft a series s and a years worth of Gamepass if i so choose.

Sony dropped the ball by not selling direct to consumer . It allows for abuse by bots and bootleggers of consoles which Sony has to know .

I'm not sure it's just Sony's issue. It seems to be dependant on where you live.

Here in Australia you can order directly when they're in stock (https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/hardware/ps5) , and the Microsoft store just sends you to retailers sites that are all out of stock if you want a Series X (https://www.xbox.com/en-AU/consoles/xbox-series-x#purchase Edit: Clicking the Check Availability in the top, right takes you to the purchasing options).

The Series S is a different story though. Because they're not sort after like the PS5 and Series X here they can be bought easily from both the Microsoft store and retailers... even second hand at $100 AUD less than the original price.

Microsoft store: https://www.xbox.com/en-AU/consoles/xbox-series-s#purchase

Retailer: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/...KA7d92HDq1W10fYJImzpTLNySAI06q9MaAgpOEALw_wcB

Absolutly depends where a person lives , that is why i can only comment on what the situation is in my town.

if i could get a series s for 100 off that pretty well seals the deal , because really if had to have a Ps5 , i am sure at some point i could buy a used one .

Sorry, I probably should have been more clear. I was addressing the quoted part below about Sony dropping the ball but didn't explain that very well.

Both Sony and Microsoft are not to blame for the abuse by the scalpers in my eyes, and both are equally affected by this. The lack of semi-conductors is the root cause of the shortage for both manufacturers. Without that shortage we wouldn't be having this discussion as there'd be consoles on the shelves. :)

I'm actually entirely amazed by that; I had no idea they were even on shelves.

Why do you think Sony selling direct would prevent scalpers ? Sony does sell direct to the public in the US.

I based my answer on my experience in my town . I dont live in California . where i live only scalpers are getting the Ps5 and i am never paying more than retail for any console .

Well on the subject of the console I know of one Japanese friend and a good friend in the US who both managed to get a PS5 from retail recently at standard price so stock is still making 'appearances' around the world.

For me the 'biggest' frustration as an owner was the lack of being able to own the 'Dual Sense' charging station but that appears to also be coming back on the market as I got one in the UK from Game at the weekend so I no longer now need to use the USB charging cable for regular controller charge.

However you still need the USB charging cable for updating the controller software though so keep this in mind people!
