PS3 Disc Drive Question

Ironically both PS3 and X360 Disc Drives failed one week apart :odd:

With all the warranties finished I have to do the repair myself. I am unable to figure out why the PS3 Disc Drive isn't working properly. The event of its death was as follows. It all started when playing Creed and the PS3 started to freeze up, then as time passed by (the same day) the disk drive wasn't reading PS3 games anymore but it was able to read PS games and Audio/Video discs. It wasn't long after that nothing would read. I have the PS3 apart with the Disc Drive extracted from the PS3. Would it be simpler to buy another PS3?

PS3's are 300$ right now and I can imagine the Disc Drive being a Blu-Ray Drive would cost about the same price to replace. The other option is I can buy games online and install them, but I only have 60GB.

What would you do?

A new drive is far cheaper than $300, you've done the hardest part which is getting the broken one out. The laser will of burnt out just like mine did a few months back.

Buy a new laser and put it in, just make sure you get the right laser model for your PS3, don't worry there are charts on the net with correct model numbers.

Yeah.. That's a good idea. I'll check out if I can get one laser near here.

Just to let you know It's not $300 Prices went up the same week
I bought mines.

I was watching the TV the other day and they were $299. I just don't remember if it was a Wal-Mart Ad.

gamerepairworld.com had them some months ago for $140. Companies that advertise on tv aren't the only ones who sell the stuff you need! I've not had occasion to search for a replacement drive more recently but I can pretty much guarantee that if you're willing to put in a little searching you can definitely get a much better price then the cost of a new PS3!
