Release Date & Price

At the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo Show in Los Angeles CA, on May 8, 2006, at an official Sony press conference, Kaz Hirai announced the release date, price and other details of the PS3.

The PS3 will be a worldwide release in Asia, North America and Europe. November 11 for Asia and November 17 for North America and Europe. As of 17th May, 2006, it has been announced by Kaz Hirai in an online interview that there will be 3 million PS3 units available on launch day, which is one more million than expected.

Other details included the PS3 will ship with either a 60GB HDD priced at $599, or will ship with a 20GB HDD for $499. The PS3, PS1 and PS2 games will display in high-definition, free basic online game service and support of Linux OS.

Sony annouced a price drop for the 20GB version of the PS3 for Japan only. No word on the rest of the territories.

Launch Shortage For US and Japan, Europe and Australia Launch Delayed

The PS3 launch for Europe and Australia has been delayed until March 2007. Sony blames the lack of blue diodes for the Blu-ray player for the production problem.

US and Japan release of the PS3 has also been effected. US units of the PS3 will be reduced to just 400,000, and Japan 100,000.

PS3 Online

The PS3 will feature an online service that will rival XBox360. Click on the below links for details.

It will offer free basic service, and will feature lobby matching, voice chat and also “commerce features." Sony will make money from the service by offering prepaid commerce cards. The card, in various values like this $50 card, will be used to purchase downloadable content and other commerce features like songs, videos, games, movies, game upgrades, etc.

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2103846&postcount=49

Since the Sony PS3 Pre 2006 E3 conference, many XBox fanboys have started rumors Sony's online game service would not be free because Kaz Hirai never stated so in the conference. He did state, "... in addition to online gaming, these basic services will be free of charge."

Because it wasn't completely clear, but clear enough for those with a brain, Kaz Hirai stated again that online gaming with the PS3 will be free "out of the box."

PS3 Confirmed Region Free Gaming

At the GDC on March 22, 2006, Sony announced the PS3 will be regional free. This allows game importers to purchase and play games from any country and play them on their PS3 without the need of a mod chip. Read more about this in the below link.

Not really its juts being updated on the fly i guess. But I thought was impressed with the other guys hardware.

On a Cell note. the original Cell was to be a 4 spe @ over 4ghz. But looking at it 8 spe's @ 3.2 makes more sence and less heat. But the Nvidia GPU is insane...

Nice to see they've got bluetooth enables controllers! Hopefully this will mean compatibility with other bluetooth enabled devices! Very nice specs nonetheless, this should give the 360 a very good challenge as long as the software is up to the challenge.

Up to seven players at once! That should be great for PS3 parties!

I' think I'll be 30 by the time GT5 hits the streets but by then we can enjoy it in 1080p when a TV that suports it will exist. also by then we should be looking at Xbox 720 or 900.

Yeah, and the AI will still be retarded.

This kinda looks like a early '80s telephon answering machine. And it's domed like that gas tanker. I just had to say it.

Finally ... :)

"we haven't had cars crash or overturn. We believed expressing this properly to be more difficult than actually making [the cars] race. In addition to properly replicating the underside of the car, when a collision occurs we'd have to have proper shape changes based on proper physical calculations. In Gran Turismo 5, we'd like to definitely add this element. We believe it will be a big theme."

 Oh wow. I don't know which color I like more. This will definately be a console to purchase. 👍

IGN
May 16, 2005 - Activision has already confirmed that Spider-Man 3 would ship on next-generation consoles, but at Sony's 2005 E3 press conference today, we got to see a real-time Spidey doing his thing.

The character was amazingly detailed, so detailed in fact that we suspected he was from the last Spider-Man 2 movie. In fact, he was. Sony claims that the PS3 is so powerful it can run the computer generated Spider-Man from the movie in real-time, which may or may not be the actual character from the next game

Damn!!!
