Q: Japanese Version Compatability

Hello,
With regards to the Japanese version of GT4, what hardware/software will I need in order to play on my Australian PS2 (SCE-SCPH-30002A).

From my prior knowledge, I have been told that all I need is a Mod Chip and a Japanese Version of GT4. If I decide to have my PS2 "Mod Chipped" will that also take care of DRE's?

And finally, with the Japanese version, will there be language options, or any means of translating to English?

Thank You.

You'll need a modchip. DRE's will depend on the laser. Modchipping this does not fix it. And no there isnt laguage options. You will just have to learn it or wait for the US/PAL release.

Thanks for the reply.

Why then are people ordering Japanese systems online?
DFP steering wheel bought in Australia will be fully compatible correct?

And finally, do you have any suggestions on mod chips? (who/where/brand/specs.)

Thank you

DFP will be compatible. I used the DFP on the Japanese Prologue on my US PS2. Modchip wise, DMS4 Lite seems to be a good choice, but someone mentioned the Duo2 or something like that is easier. Depends on which version ps2 you have also. Most people recommend you get a modchip professionally installed unless you're really good and have lots of patience and the necessary tools (this can cost quite a bit).

check out www.modchipstore.com (i bought mine there)

All that said and done, there is only one thing which is putting me off buying a mod-chip, the language. Can someone who has a Japanese copy, yet knows none of the language describe how you play/navigate the game?

Oh language is a piece of cake. Maskrider here has been translating the menus for us, and also lik-sang has most of the basic menu translations on their site. It's not hard to figure out after awhile. It's not like it's an RPG or anything w/ extensive reading/listening required. Only thing that might suck is that I THINK the license tests gives you the guide vocally instead of text like GT3. Like in Prologue. Also someone mentioned they talk about the car you're driving in a certain mode, so you might miss out some stuff there but nothing major.

Well if I do decided to modchip, this Japanese version will only last until the Australian version arrives.
Is there any problems with the PAL/NTSC combatability regarding TVs?
And the Modchip will allow NTSC games to be played?
Can you link me to where I can find some translations?
Thanks again

Well PAL/NTSC compatability is tricky. If your TV supports NTSC signals (usually it does if it has component jacks) there's no problem. If your TV is pretty ancient then most likely it doesn't support NTSC and your colors, size, frequency is gonna be all off. I don't think a modchip can help in that case, as it's the TV that must display the signal properly.
A modchip will allow you to play any PS2 game regardless of signal or region code.

Translations can be found here: http://image.lik-sang.com/content/gt4/translation.htm

Don't take my word for it though, you might want to do some research on your TV and see if some other members respond.

What are Component Jacks, just the input for dvd players/vcrs etc??
When you say modern, your talking roughly Year 2000 models above?
Plasmas/LCDS/Projectors should support NTSC correct?

yes they should support NTSC because they most likely have component inputs. Component inputs are 3 inputs that just for video, instead of having 1 input for video like RCA or S-Video. But again that's what I've read, you should really try to find out if your TV supports NTSC signals though.
