Honda is to give its S2000 roadster a last hurrah by offering a stripped-out, super-quick Type-R version.

The S2000 Type-R is expected to appear later this year as a run-out limited edition model. Its weight will be reduced by up to 100kg to just 1,150kg, thanks to the removal of much sound deadening, the spare tyre and superfluous trim, as well as the use of some lighter-weight engine components and the fitment of a fixed tin-top roof. The standard air conditioning, stereo and airbags will all be deleted, though buyers will have the option to add them in at extra cost. These modifications will improve the power-to-weight ratio and thus make the S2000 even quicker. There won't be modifications to the engine itself, though the car will receive upgraded suspension, brakes and tyres.

The all-new S2000 is thought to be scheduled for 2008. It's said to remain true to the format of front-engine and rear-wheel drive, but it may shift in character. Sources are divided as to whether it will become less hardcore and more of a luxury roadster, rivalling the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SLK or BMW Z4, or whether it will be marketed as a lower-cost fun sportster in the mould of the Mazda MX-5. A new version of the 2.0-litre engine giving around 200bhp, a weight of 1,250kg and an electric folding hard-top has also been suggested.

-> All I can say 'who cares', the stupid people of American Honda will surely not to bring it here in the US, another Type-R AGAIN! :grumpy:

Who cares? I--the foremost Honda hater on this forum--does. I love the S2000 as a quick, fun, roadster. I'd drive an S2000 before a Boxster anyday. Having said all that, Honda is too little too late. They really needed to put a higher performance model in showrooms a long time ago. In a car like that the last thing I want is sound deadening. :ouch: And for the price the S2000 isn't what a call a bargain. Either way, they should bring the Type-R over here just for the sheer fact that it will benefit Honda more than not in terms of the tuner and young car enthusiast. 👍

^ Well I love Honda's, but with American Honda in the way, I can still see that another Type-R will not come here in the US. Sure, I especially love S2000's, but if it comes out, it will be another "I wish they'll bring it here" cars, just like the Evo IX wagon, DC5 Type-R, Audi RS4 Avant/Cabrio, M3 CSL, Focus ST, etc. :indiff:

Given that the S2000 is probably the only Honda I'd buy outside of the Fit Sport, it is somewhat disheartening to know that the car will more than likely not come to America. Too bad really, as I'm sure there is more than enough die-hard fans here in America who would buy-in...

...Me? Not so much I suppose. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some S2000, but with the presumed price increase, were going to start scratching at Corvette territory, and we all know how that goes for me...

Even the 350Z roadster and Mustang GT 'vert are better buys than the S2000. Well actually I'd rather have a hardtop anyway.

^ What!? 350Z Rdtr and a pony GT Conv.? Give me a break, an S can give the best of both worlds (street and track) stock. While the fumbling horse GT and a porky Z get upset on the track, don't get me wrong they're good cruiser cars but the S is the real deal roadster at track, plus the reliability to back it up. No wonder the S is so underrated! :indiff:

I like the look of that high speed one.

And on the S2000, I can't wait. Just a few days ago I was wondering why there wasn't a Type R version of the S2000 already.

I loves me some S2000

I get the feeling that this one is going to be an obscure Type-R model that is going to be sold to only the hardcore S2000 fans, who wants it not just for the added performance, but also for the collectivity(I hope that's a real word......). Maybe like NSX Type-R?(now it's really not coming to the States :D). Price will be too high, it will not be that much faster, but special, premium model for the diehards. That's my guess.

On Honda, I like them. I used to be a Toyota kid(too young to be called a guy), when I was growing up. When I came to the States, I liked Nissans. I always thought of Hondas as sissy cars, but I can't deny it, I love their cars. Screw U, Toyota and Nissan. I'm a Honda Man(except xB's, I still want one). :sly:

Dude the 350Z is quite fast on a track, re-think your statement. And in terms of performance for the $ the GT is quite a bargain considering the SLOWER S2000 is almost $9k more expensive.

8'26 - Nissan 350Z - 2003
8'39 - Honda S2000 - 2000

And just for grins:
8'35 - BMW 130i – 2005

^ Um, you're comparing to a 350Z COUPE (and obviously a Track-spec model with Brembos) and a [AP1] S2000 ROADSTER, and obviously taken the Z is a much newer car. But if you compare roadster to roadster, the Z (the top model {Touring-spec I believe}) vs. the S (especially the [AP2]), then we'll talk. And also given to the Mustang GT, oh come on! Its not even a roadster it a CONVERTIBLE/CABRIOLET! 2+2, not 2 seater. :indiff:

I'm still not certain why the inclusion of the Mustang is so upsetting. Given that it is an extremely cheap car that offers similar (straight-line) performance, and moderately decent handling, why not throw her in there?

...Hell, while we're at it, wheres the Saturn Sky Red-Line?
