I've finally found a few parts I can buy to upgrade my PC into a gaming rig (in a certain aspect).

I currently have:

RAM: 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM PC3200 (Samsung Manufactured)
Video Unit: NVidia GeForce 4 MX Onboard Video Unit (64MB)
Power Supply: 220W Piece Of 🤬

I'm thinking of upgrading to:

RAM: Another 512MB Stick of memory (184-Pin DDR SDRAM) (pqi TURBO manufactured)

Video Card:NVidia 6800 128MB AGP 4x/8x (Has to be AGP, NVidia cards only)

Power Supply: Rosewill RV450 450W Power Supply

Case Fan: Atrix 80mm Case Fan (I WILL need to move more air around when I buy all this stuff. A $3 fan isn't a bad idea.

Grand Total (Including Shipping): $275.80

Yeah, I know. You're thinking "Holy jesus, why spend that kind of money?". Just forget about the money right now. I'm on a $300 budget for upgrading my Video Card, Power Supply, Getting at least 1GB of RAM, and adding in a case fan to keep things cool. I want to get some approval from some GTP members before I carry out any purchases. NewEgg is my only buying option, keep that in mind.

I'd choose a higher-quality power supply, card, and fan ... Memory is fine if you're not overclocking ...

I'd wait until a few 6800GSs come in AGP format ... Better performance than the 6800, will be about the same cost ...

I'd rather get a good 6600GT and a good PSU, than a slightly faster, poorer built card and a questionable PSU ... Getting a quiet fan will save your sanity and will only cost a few $$$ more ...

Dude, i got a 480W Atrix PSU for $25 from newegg.com, and it's been going great for a long time now. RAM, i got a whole gig for 59 bucks from Kingston (from outpost.com), so 512mb should be around 25-30bucks, and as for the GPU, i have no clue. If it was a PCI-E, i could give you some suggestions, but for AGP, i have no clue.

VIPFREAK. You can take your trolling somewhere else. I don't care about what your getting.

Jmac: I looked at a 6600, and it was a reasonable buy. But I can get the 6800 for a few bucks more. And why is it a "questionably built card"? I don't see what your getting at here.

No point of cheeping out on anything, especially when it comes to PSUs, itÂ’s going to be nothing more than an expensive paperweight.

Get a 6600GT and put the extra cash towards the best PSU you can afford - Increase your budget if you can.

A poor quality power supply can cause numerous problems and there's a greater possibility of it damaging other equipment in your computer in addition to an increased chance of becoming an expensive paperweight ...

The 6600GT isn't much slower than the 6800 and there are many that are under $150, effectively allowing you to put at least another $25 towards your PSU and another $5 towards a quieter case fan.

I know. Thats why I selected a PSU that got some fairly great reviews. Money isn't everything. and I don't need a quiter case fan. Noise isn't going to be a problem..

I bought a some similar case fans from newegg and they were so loud I returned them. You may think the noise won't be a problem, but believe me, it'll annoy the heck out of you.

If you can, try and get hold of some Nexus case fans. They're apparently the cream of the crop when it comes to fans. Newegg doesn't stock them though, so if you must order from there, get some Panaflo fans.

As for PSU's, try and get something by well-known brands like OCZ, Antec and Thermaltake.

There's a $15 500W PSU at Microcenter that's calling my name... I'll probably get it and a cheap ass case. :D
Don't. Those things will fail on you most of the time. I got a 25 dollar PSU 480W that's great, get a more expensive one.

Well forget it :D

I went to best buy today and got a Radeon 9550 AGP 4x/8x for $80 ($41 after i used my gift card ;) )

It's doing the job quite fine I must say. But I may still consider a fan for the GPU because the heatsink isn't even touchable (I have been playing SWAT 4, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and Battlefield 2 Demo for 4 hours straight  )

It seems if a puter can run FEAR decently then it can run any other game even better. FEAR has the most realistic GORE I've ever seen in ANY game. I'm a sucker for this game.

He's right. FEAR is awful as a system hog. If you can run FEAR, you can run anything current.

Thats not my point.

I asked him why he loads up every thread inside with this pointless "MY NEW COMPUTER" and "FEAR" nonsense.

This looks like a great deal ...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102613

6600GT:
Core: 500 MHz x 8 pixel pipelines x 1 texel pipeline = 4000 MTexels/s
Memory: 1000 MHz x 128-bit = 14.901 GB/s

X800GTO Fireblade:
Core: 400 MHz x 12 pixel pipelines x 1 texel pipeline = 4800 MTexels/s (20% higher fillrate)
Memory: 980 MHz x 256-bit = 29.206 GB/s (96% more memory bandwidth)

Edit: Forgot you have AGP ... :(

I got a better deal, go to Compusa, and get a X700 for $129.99. They also have the X850 Pro for 229.99.

the x700 is an underperformer. The 6600GT outguns it pretty heavily dude.
