Got the whole day today to work on the race report, but for now here's an onboard lap of Taupo I found. It's in a Formula car sure, but should give you an idea of what the track's like. Note the almost perfect balance between tight and technical bits, and fast and flowing bits. Plus the thrilling 1km back straight that launches into a tight chicane, making for some epic drag races and battles of bravery!

The last time I saw an onboard lap of Taupo was back when the circuit hosted the A1 GP.
It was fairly new back then & what I get from the lap you posted is, just how bumpy it is now.

It's not so bad, given that this was a (presumably) very stiff open wheeler, and we run stock suspension which absorbs most of the bumps. The surface didn't feel too rough or old.

Yeah, obviously any sedan would be better than an open wheeler.

What speeds were you seeing at the end of the long straight into the chicane?

Right at the end, the highest I dared to let the needle go before sticking it on its nose was 195, though with the ratio of diff that's in it at the moment, I'd expect that to be a little bit off. In reality it was probably more like 185.

The Taupo Test - BadThurst 12hr Race Report

20190223_073222.jpg

For the second time in NZ Lemons history (And the first time since Hooncorp got involved), the racing was held not at Hampton Downs Raceway, but at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in Taupo. Unlike Hampton Downs, which is fast, wide and very flowing, Taupo is much more technical, a bit narrower, and features two particularly difficult hairpins. Topping off the experience is a thrilling 1km back straight, making for exciting drag races into the final section!

Our team for Taupo was smaller due to the shorter race, but no less skilled.

The Saturday morning practise session was damp, but by the time the race was due to start things had dried out. The start was remarkably uneventful, both cars making great pace and avoiding the usual opening hour chaos as the field spread out. As the Saturday was only four hours, we opted to take it easy and save the big moves for the Sunday, which was eight hours. Still, both cars managed to keep a solid pace, keeping around the middle of the pack.

Mostly the cars ran faultlessly on Saturday, however a few minor issues did need addressing at the end of the four hours.
The Commodore needed:
Minor steering wheel repair.
Front brake discs were replaced due to an increasing shimmy.
Rear discs were replaced
All pads were replaced.

The Lucino needed much less.
Front pads because we had them and had the time, so may as well.
Minor electrical issue

We were all done by 10.30pm on both cars, so a chance to get some shut eye and ponder what was yet to come.

The Sunday started very, very wet and our tails were wagging. For some reason, we seem to do really well in the rain. The Commodore is very predictable, and both heavy & powerful, so the elements just seem to make very little difference to the old girl. The Lucino was untried in these conditions, however being light and reasonably nimble on new shocks, but standard springs, it too was quite the little handler.

There isn’t too much to mention for the next four hours, until the Nissan Lucino was parked just beside the pit exit looking very nice but sadly it was extremely hot. The engine light and oil light had both come on, and the driver (Jonathan) wisely saw this as a good reason to park the car.

It was quickly recovered and towed back into the pits where the team set about seeing how bad the damage was.

The steam from the radiator was terrific, so all that could be done was to let the car cool down. After a good half hour, water was introduced to the cooling system where a strong line of water from the engines water pump showed what had happened. The engine was terribly damaged, and sadly no repairs were going to make that car circulate again. It was game over for the Lucino……...or so we thought.

The Commodore just kept going. From all manner of directions, it kept being asked to go fast, and despite a gruelling hot day, a very abrasive surface and Lucino drivers now getting behind the wheel, the whines got a bit louder, the tyres got a lot lighter, but the team just got prouder as the finishing line (chequered flag) loomed closer.

At this point, we had asked the organiser’s if we could tow the stricken Lucino across the finish line legally, safely and of course use the parts car, our Nissan Pulsar race car that we had used in the May 2018 Non-stop 24 hour race. Gladly they agreed as long as both drivers were all suited up, safe and obeyed race control.

So 12 hours of racing saw us post another 24 Hours of Lemons Nz finish in unusual circumstances.

Holden Commodore GTS = 14th place out of 31 starters
Nissan Lucino HRS = 20th place
Nissan Pulsar Autech = 21st place

Yes the Pulsar was classified. We had started the car in the race simply to do a handful of shake down laps since it had sat for so long since it's last outing. To do this it had been scrutineered and fitted with a transponder for Race Control to log it, just like any other competitor.
So as a result, we entered 2 cars, and had 3 cars finish the event.

On a side note,
We had a delay with a large bundle of parts we had ordered to both use, and carry as spares. One of these parts was a new water pump we wanted to fit to the Lucino. Sadly it arrived on Thursday night, and the cars were shipped at 9am Friday Morning so we had no time to fit it. As Homer would say - Doh !!

As always, a huge thank you to all of the people and businesses who supported us!

The next one on the calendar is it. The big one! There's a lot to do in preparation for this one, and we'll be posting all the news, updates, and happenings right here so stay tuned folks!!!

Nathan, that fifth photo from the top disturbs me.

What the hell is with the Suzuki Ignis being able to run in an air conditioned state like that? :odd:
Well, their theme was "Good Bye Pork Pie". So in keeping with their theme, one of their penalties was to sell off as many parts of their car as they could and continue on their way.

iirc they were only out like that for a few laps as a laugh before coming back in and bolting everything back on. Still safe as houses with the cage, harnesses, plus the fact that it's a centre seater.

A centre seater?

Oh good grief

Looks like great fun, do you have to have a racing licence (or track experience for that matter) to take part? This seems like the sort of thing that I'd fancy a crack at some day :)

The license needed for the event is a AASA Club racing license. You can get one for the event only or you can get an annual license, up to you. They cost about 70 bucks for the annual one, and it's about 10 minutes on the internet to get one and you're done!

As for track experience, it's recommended but not 100% neccessary. Lemons is all about giving it a go after all, even if racing isn't entirely your thing!

Alright folks, we are now only two weeks away from showtime!!! The cars are nearly ready, the drivers are nearly all sorted, and the team is all but finalized!! The excitement is building around the HQ as we tick things off the to do list, and you can expect more of this kind of thing as we get closer to and during the race!

We're now less than one week out from the big one!!! We just had our team meeting with final last minute preparations being made, and things are starting to get really exciting!!! We'll be sure to keep everyone here as up to speed as we possible can over the weekend, so keep it tuned right here!!!

Twas the night before LeMons...

All the cars are scrutineered, registered and signed in! There's only a few small niggly bits to take care of and we're ready to rock and roll!

The countdown is on!!! As of this post, there are 17 hours left till the race start, and it's gonna be hard to get a good night's sleep tonight with all this anticipation flowing through the veins!

Internet strength out there is pretty dodgy, as I expected. But I'll be doing all I can to keep everyone here as up to date as I can!!

Team GTPlanet: The drivers check out the track.

This post is where all the updates will go from myself and the crew as the race progresses! Keep checking back here over the next couple of days for all the news as it happens!
:gtpflag:

2:10pm - Cars gridding up now. Hooncorp cars are getting last minute adjustments but since the race doesn't start till 3pm we're not worried. Starting at the back means we avoid the carnage!

3:04pm - Race start. The Commy is 40th and the Pulsar is 44th. Louie's behind the wheel. Already some teams are suffering mechanical issues and crashing, and we expect to make some serious ground in these opening hours.

4:11pm - Louie lost comms towards the end of his stint but this wasn't a major problem. Daniel's now behind the wheel, sitting 29th!!

5:06pm - Daniel coming in, Nathan taking the reigns. Position currently unknown, TV is switched to the race camera rather than the lap scoring.

6:11pm - Nathan's out, Cameron's in. Was a strong stint, and now in 23rd! Now it's dark, so here's where the fun begins.

6:55pm - Pulsar is now in the top 20, currently sitting 19th. The Commodore is 44th after suffering a collision.

7:10pm - Cameron's handed the Pulsar over to Karl in 19th. The Commodore is in the garage due to a worsening clutch that needs replacing. The race leader has completed 166 laps so far.

7:55pm - Following a string of safety cars, we elected to capitalize on the reduced pace by bringing Karl in and smashing out a driver swap. Louie is back behind the wheel. Pulsar is 26th at the moment.

8:55pm - Louie did a tremendous job keeping his nose clean, ended his second stint 21st. Daniel's up next and will hopefully continue to rise through the ranks. It's pitch black, hope he's not scared of the dark!

10:12pm - The fog's starting to roll in! It's still a fair way off, but there's a chance that it will engulf the track at some time in the early morning. Daniel's out of the car and Cameron's back in, currently 23rd.

11:33pm - The Commodore is finally out of the pits and back on the track, with a thrust bearing found to be the issue. Karl is back in control of the Pulsar, currently 18th!

11:56pm - Karl's now 16th, and a yellow flag is going to be called at midnight to change the flag marshals. We're going to take this opportunity to fuel up the Pulsar, give it a quick spanner check and chuck Louie back behind the wheel!

12:14am - Quick spanner check showed the Pulsar is in very good heath. Things are looking good for this race!

1:10am - Louie hands the car over to Daniel in 14th. We're slowly but surely climbing the ranks, and the fog mentioned earlier is starting to make it's way in.

1:34am - Pulsar's had a solid smack in the front. Got fed off the track by another car then took an impact to the front. Looks like radiator damage.

3:42am - After replacing the radiator and smacking the front out, Nathan took the Pulsar out for a few test laps to ensure it was fighting fit once more. After it was found to be a-ok, he continued along, now 37th, but making up for lost time. Rain is intermittent but enough to grease the track and make things rather slippery, which often causes the little Pulsar to catch rivals much quicker than itself. We're past the half way mark, but it's not over yet!

4:49am - Cameron climbs out, Karl climbs in. Slowly but surely making up the laps, currently 35th.

7:20am - The little pulsar keeps on climbing, currently 32nd. Race got red flagged an hour or so ago due to fog, so the entire crew took the opportunity to service both cars and then knock off for some sleep. Couldn't have been better timing as the Pulsar was just due for a pad change. Race will be getting underway very soon, and now the sun is rising!

8:30am - Louie has wrapped up the sunrise stint, and now we're back to racing in broad daylight. Beautiful day, cool but clear. Perfect conditions for a comeback!

10:30am - The Pulsar's continuing to reel in it's competitors, currently 29th. Only a few laps separate it from its next position, and with thick dark clouds looming overhead, it's still anyone's game!

12:03pm - This will be the Pulsar's final tank of gas. We're in the closing stages now! Changing the front tires because they're a bit worse for wear after 20+ hours of racing, and after that we shouldn't have to do any more work on the car!

1:11pm - Penultimate stint for the Pulsar! The clutch is starting to slip, but it's nothing a bit of nursing won't handle. Louie and Cameron opted not to drive this time, so Mike's behind the wheel, passing the time before Nathan brings it home.

2:00pm - Nathan getting in the car to bring it home. Torrential rain falling now, track is extremely wet.

3:03pm - The GTPlanet x Hooncorp Pulsar has survived the 24hr Lemons!!! Unofficial results classify us as 24th out of 56 starters, while the Commodore suffers a DNF due to critical engine damage.
