This week's gr3 and 4 races are very hard for me.

Been putting in some practice, but I can't break 1:52 at Dragon Tail. Anyone want to upload some video that shows their inputs please :-) I'm ranked AS so hasn't been fun the last two days, need a better reference for how to drive. Thanks

I think I've only gone 1:53:00 as my fastest time last night. Love to know how some of those other peeps seem to fly around the track.

Still having oversteer issues with the cars using my ds4, but doing low 1:48's with the Viper. Check out the tuning thread. Those guys got some nice setups.

You can't apply a tune in Sport mode...can you? I thought that's why the BoP is there.

Now u can make setup adjustments (last week it was locked..this week u can change it) , BoP only limites the power and weight of the car

You can't change your power output (with Mi) or reduce the weight but you can change the suspension, downforce, LSD and gears. At least when the race is open to cars you own and not "rentals", as it was last week.

I've won all my races with stock setups though. Only discovered this around 30m ago. ^^ I'll check how much I can improve tomorrow I guess.

I did a 1:47:956 at Dragon Trail and 1:56:473 at Lake Maggiore - with a wheel.

Edit: got a setup and did a 1:55:576 now. It really makes a difference...

You can change set ups for quite a few areas like camber, downforce, etc but yes the BOP is there for weight and power.

Oh, thanks! Well then, perhaps that will aid my qualifying times getting a bit lower so I can start more towards the front! Time to browse the tuning setups elsewhere on here!

The trick to put in good lap times is to drive with less grace and instead really push it aggressively. The game doesn't punish you for going almost off track so you need to take advantage of that. This is why you see a lot of the top players completely destroying the curbs. Their driving style is just a small step away from actual cheating.

An example of the track in question:

Thats an impressive lap, especially at the chicane.

I think its possible to be over aggressive though, if you start trying to throw the car around or cause big shifts in weight with very hard braking typically I find I go slower, it mimics my (limited) track experience. The guy in that video is very smooth with everything he's doing and is pays off because he carries loads of apex speed and is so early on the power, especially out of the last corner. I'd love to see a lap of Suzuka like that.

Thanks for the video. Yeah exactly, if you driving too smooth your driving too slow and if you driving too aggressively you driving too slow. Got to find a healthy in between, I just can't do it on these races. I spent another hour and a half at dragon tail and barely got a 1:52. I was in the top three in qualifying and all the other three tracks from last week, now I'm in the bottom three. But then again I am in a Dr of B&A with a s sr....

Can you upload a video of one of your runs? We can analyse it to tell you areas where you could improve. Without the visual guide, it's very hard to offer specific advice.

Without changing anything on the car I was able to drive 1:49.3 in a GTR with an automatic will start to learn to use manual tomorrow.

But allot of drivers seem to lose time in the first corners and the chicane by being to gentle with the car you can really throw the car through them with ease and win your time.

Cracking lap, shows where the time is made up in turns 2 & 3 and also the chicane

In the beta, you could run that first chicane easily flat out with the ds4 and my bro was top 10 at Dragon Trail steadily, now you can't even drive on the curbs without spinning out using the controller. Unless you are really gentle, have a bomb-ass tune, or you're really lucky.

Thanks for this! I was able to shave off a decent amount of time using the video as reference for where I could improve by being more aggressive as well as setting up a tune from elsewhere on this forum.

Was finally able to get pole in a few races with a 1:48.5xx qualifying time. I could definitely improve it, but I was quite content to win a few races last night.

Tune the Diff!! Very overlooked part for DS4 users. Reduce the Accel by 10 and reduce the initial torque by 2 or so. This will ultimately make the car understeer more on-power. But isn't that what you want ? ;)

I'm new to the game (less than 5 days played) with very minimal experience in driving sim (played some GT 5 in college but never took it too seriously).
After this past weekend, I was able to get my qualifying time down to 1.50.5 (currently driving with a controller on automatic), however I genuinely think I could shave at least a second off of this after watching that video above as I have been way too gentle through the chicane and I've been overbraking/on gas too early into the S bends throwing my line off.

I'm driving at B/B currently, but it's been matching me with some SR A's so I might get a promotion soon.

My only feedback is that a lot of these guys that have qualified in front of me with sub 1.50 times can't put 4 solid laps together without a mistake - I've finished top 3 at least 10 times and won 2 times putting up consistent 1.51-1.52 laps. There aren't too many passing opportunities on the track if you know how to defend inside lines so even without insane pace you should be able to finish top 5 if you drive consistently.

Granted this is at DR B where qualifying times right now are usually high 1.48 anywhere to low 1.53 (I've only seen a handful of 1.48's at DR:B) top qualifiers are usually 1.49.xx with 1.52 putting you around 10th.

Did many people get below 45 seconds on Kyoto. Managed a 45.25 as my best, but top times were about 44.1. Best grid position ive managed is 6th and best finish 5th i think! Still on DR - D since playing from release day and on SR - S. Think being on S so quickly has meant i've been stuck racing the fastest guys in the world. One guy i raced with last night apologised in advance to stay he was going to crash into people so he could get his SR reduced and not have to race against the fastest people out there.

I managed a 1.52 once, then over a second off that ever since. Top time i saw in my races was about 1.46. Can't believe i could be so far off the pace. Will need to see where i can change setup as didn't realise that was possible in Sport mode with your own cars

FYI I've probably driven that course at least 70 times now, and when I first started I was sitting around 1.56, then just started chipping the seconds away until I plateaued around 1.52 - then in race I drove a 1.50.8 so I went back to qualifying until I went at least that fast.

How many times have you driven the course? If you're still less than 20 laps I would just put the time in in qualifying - and watch the video above.

If you're on a controller, use the GTR, turn traction off, ABS to weak, and gearing you can use manual or automatic upto you.

Then I like to have the cone assist on, the one where it has little cones dotted around, just because it helps with remembering just how late I can brake.

from there it's pretty much just being aggressive where you think you can't be, and running wide on exits.

I personally find the biggest chunks of laptime come from braking slightly earlier in Turn 1 and getting on the power way sooner, and then the same for turn 4 getting on the power early so you should be getting anywhere from a 36:5 - 37:00 for the first sector.

Then Turn 5 I usually brake around where the cone is, but I'm alread heading to the inside and on the power early.

If I had to guess you're probably losing time in that right, left, left right section just after sector 2 checkpoiint.... if you brake slightly (just a tap) as you go alongside that giant concrete p[ole thing on the right after the first "Right, Left" then you can literally go flat out through the next "Left Right" and get a great drive off that section heading into the final corner.

If you're on a controller you really have to throw it around a LOT and ace everything to get the ultimate lap times, the best I've had was a 1:48.0, and thats with automatic gears so I'm sure eventually with manual there'd be even more time coming out of the slow corners.

I personally think it's less about car setup, and much more about knowing the track and removing the assists

I think most of the high stability cars work well with controller, personally I've found the Atenza, GTR and the VW all feel roughly the same.
I've had no success on my Viper though.

I totally agree with the rest of your assessment though, it's all about learning just how much you can push it - and then once you can consistently put up sub 1.50's, driving a 1.50.xx lap feels like a cakewalk.

Just popped in here, read over the posts with you guys talking about "the fastest car, racinglines, aggressive driving, knowing the track, good tunes" and more. All of this is important. I noticed though that hardly anyone ever mentions the driving assists he uses.
Another GTP member and great driver had a test this morning and found, that the countersteer assist gave him almost 1 second on Dragon Trail.
So I think if it comes to laptimes we should include mention the driving assists.

Pretty sure I said take all the assists off, seen as it'll give you buckets of time.

As for he countersteer assist, I haven't even seen that, are you implying that he should turn that assist on and he'll gain time?

No. It's everyone's own decision to use whatever aids he thinks he needs. I for one only use light ABS, nothing else.
I could be faster with aids sometimes, but that's not my way to go.
This is a thread comparing laptimes, and for driving assists making big differences, we should mention them. Just saying ... no offense meant.
