The garage queen is free of the garage after sitting in there for 3 weeks. Missed driving this thing. New rotors, shocks, caliper paint removal and some spring cleaning. Last two days were hell trying to finish it up. I lost 7 pounds working in the heat.

A few things have happened since I last updated:
  • Catless downpipe install
  • Added Vibrant 1793 18" resonator
  • Custom 5mm spacers with integrated hub rings
  • Boxed in the lower control arms (HUGE difference in steering feel and input)
  • ECU tune adjustment and added "mild" pops from the exhaust (see video below - very similar to the N cars)
And a few things are waiting in the wings:
  • Veloster N brake cooling air diverters
  • New boost control solenoid (having some partial throttle boost building issues)
  • ARP wheel studs (for the front only, need longer to go with the spacers)
  • Aluminum shifter bracket bushings
When it's not 110+ degrees here I will attempt to put the above items on the car.

Here's a recent canyon video:

Headed to Colorado for a track day in my home town in early October. It'll actually be a nice road trip from the 8th through the 13th. The trip there/back is usually a 1-day affair each way, but this time I will be utilizing roads off the beaten path, and taking my time. So I'm planning on taking 2 days to get there, 2 days in my home town to do a track day and mess around, and 2 days back. Really looking forward to it.

In the mean time, I have a month to get some things done on the car including:
  • Installing new tires (see below)
  • Alignment
  • Oil Change
  • Brake Bleeding with new fluid
  • Replacing the stock front sway bar bushings
  • Installing front subframe collars while doing the above (subframe has to be dropped to remove/install the sway bar)
  • Installing longer front wheel studs
Should be a good time. Have a local friend with a 2020 Forte GT coming along. I am going to try and vlog the whole trip (1 day per vlog) and the track day (separate vlog) so look forward to ~7 videos. Going to try and start growing my YouTube channel shortly. That is one of my goals for 2021, aside from trying to get a job at the new Tesla factory in Austin, TX.

Had some fun in the canyons last night. Used 2 GoPro's and two separate mics to capture engine and exhaust sound for full effect. Came out pretty good I think. Pay no attention to the timer. ;)

So....update. The valve cover project a few posts up never really came about. I was directed to a shop that could do the work and the guy assured me it would be no problem with a 2-3 week wait time. After 6 months, yes, 6 months, I got a valve cover back that was not finished and not what I wanted. Needless to say I sold it and have moved on. Such a disappointment. :indiff: Since the last update, I have added the following:
  • Whiteline rear toe arms
  • SXTH Element carbon fiber intake
  • MSD ignition coils
  • OEM 2.0L 60mm throttle body (with spacer for EVAP solenoid line)
  • Planted Technologies seat brackets
  • Braum Racing Venom Series seats
  • Downsized from 18x8.5 +50 Enkei TS-10 with 255/35 tires to 17x8 +45 Enkei TS-10 with 245/40. Better fitment, no more rubbing!
I am also in the process of replacing the factory turbo. I am supposed to be tuned for ~21psi but I am barely hitting 18 on a good day, so my best guess is that the turbo is on it's way out as there are no leaks that I could find. I have purchased a 2012-2017 Veloster factory turbo for $50 along with a new center section with more blades and upgraded bearings. A guy in my Elantra Sport group just did this swap and is reporting great results, so I figured I would follow his lead. He is scheduled for dyno runs on Monday (6/14) so will report back. I'm also getting the hot side of the turbo and the manifold (all one piece) ceramic coated before reassembling it and putting it in the car. Hoping to have this done in the next couple months or so. The car has over 82k miles on it and has been amazing. Best car I have ever owned and I have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon.

Anyway, here's some pics of the above changes:

Hit the dyno this morning for a couple reasons. First was to basically see how much power the car is making in it's current form. And second, to confirm my suspicions that the turbo is not operating at full efficiency. Which it did. Car is making ~220whp which is about what I expected (maybe a hair lower) but the torque was either high or low and not what it should be. So combined with the fact that I'm only hitting ~18psi when I am tuned for 21+ means that it's time to get rid of the original turbo. It's all good, it's been through a very hard 83k miles. Will get the new turbo in and return to the same dyno by the end of the month.

So I'm digging the new Elantra N-Line, so I figured I'd poke my head in here and ask you:

"Would you buy this car again?"

How has your experience been with owning your Hyundai? Would you buy another Hyundai in general?

Would I buy this particular car? Yes. Zero regrets and 4.5 years later I do not have any plans to get rid of it. My next car purchase will be in addition to, not a replacement.

It has 84k very hard miles on it currently and has only been in for warranty work twice. Both for the same thing, a squeaky cooling fan. Zero problems aside from that. (dying turbo aside, that is partly my fault and someone just using the car as a commuter should not have the same issue) I do all the maintenance myself, 5w40 synthetic every 3500 miles. Trans fluid already replaced twice (might do again soon).

Would I buy another Hyundai right now? Unlikely. Their styling has gone down a direction I don't care for and no amount of performance will convince me to overlook that. Though I say that as someone that lives in the US because if they sold the i30 Fastback N here I would have bought one a long time ago. I would also have a go at the i20 N which would basically be my car minus 400lbs.

Good to know.

Sounds like I'll be giving the Elantra a look, since it's fundamentally still quite similar to your car. Will be interesting to see how the full-on N comes priced.

Wish you hadn't told me about the i20 and i30 Fastback, those are pretty slick looking cars. Damn shame small cars and hatchbacks are in short supply these days on our shores.

Big weekend coming up. Turbo is officially going in Saturday, then we start street tuning. Also adding another resonator, changing the trans fluid again before an upcoming 8-day road trip to Colorado and back (more on that later) and doing a few other things. I also ordered a new lower engine mount (torque rod) but the box arrived today from UPS in terrible shape and missing the mount. So they'll have to send me another one. Rear camber arms will go in too, have an alignment scheduled for the 25th. And then hopefully the tuning is good enough to hit the dyno for new numbers on the 1st.

Turbo is in! Feels great to have some low end torque back for driving around town. Missed that. Currently going back and forth with the tuner to dial her in, peaking 22psi and holding 20 to redline which is a significant improvement over the stock turbo that can lose as much as 6psi by redline. Also installed another resonator (should have waited a bit, not sure I like it), Whiteline camber arms (don't need more camber, just want better bushings), new blow-off valve with recirculation tube, and lower engine mount. Car goes in for an alignment on Saturday, I have a dyno session scheduled for the 1st, then we're off on an 8-day road trip to Colorado and back.

Well, numbers are in. Not exactly what I was expecting, however there's a chance the timing was not right (not enough) which skewed the numbers slightly. Also, this is a Dyno Dynamics dyno that is notorious for reading low. (worse than a Mustang dyno even...) I have plans to get the timing straightened out and hit a DynoJet by the end of the month.
