what a great state we live in
Hell, going down the mountain to Jerome I was stuck behind a big flat bed truck that had plenty of room in our lane but decided to drive down the middle of the road so oncoming cars were forced to squeeze past. It was the worst driving I had seen from one of those in a long time.

Highway 89A between Prescott and Jerome, and then again between Sedona and Flagstaff, is probably my favorite road in the state. Sadly I can never convince myself to take up the especially twisty section between Prescott and Jerome lately, seeing as every time I've driven up there before, there's always been some oblivious Harley Davidson rider setting a disappointingly slow pace.

I hate being in Casa Grande because nice drives take forever. But I went up through Wickenburg, Prescott to Jerome, then turned around and went back the same way. It was nice when I wasn't stuck behind anyone.

The good news is that they are supposed to be completely repaving Highway 88 to Canyon Lake by the end of the year, so there's some fun a little closer to home.

Made a change to my wheel choice. I still want 17's for track use, but those will come at a later date. For now I am going to get some 18's and just re-use the stock tires. Going with XXR 527's in Chromium Black, 18x8 +42 offset. Purchasing on the 14th, will post pics when they arrive and I get them mounted.

Here's what they look like on another car:

Here's a couple better ones. Next purchase I think will be coilovers...

Looks great. Very good fitment and the colour goes very well with the car.

You guys are so lucky, you can just buy coilovers and install them. We here in NZ have to certify it which is an ~$800 exercise for just this one mod if that is all you are doing and when you do that it locks your ride height to +/- 5% and your wheel size gets noted down so you can't change them. A bit frustrating but I know why the system is there. Best to do all your mods and then get a cert when doing certain things here.

That sucks. 👎

Maybe bad news update. I haven't mentioned it here but I have for a while been experiencing some hesitation under partial throttle acceleration, mainly 40-80% throttle. I thought I might have an exhaust leak at the manifold since I could hear the distinct "ticking" sounding that comes from such a leak when I would rev the car next to a wall. Told the dealership about it a couple times, they couldn't replicate the sound. (go figure) Well, I pulled the car into the garage last night and immediately after I shut it off, I could hear what I instantly recognized as the turbo impeller scraping on the turbo housing. :( So that might be the problem. I have an appointment for the 29th (soonest my schedule worked with theirs) and in the mean time I will put the stock intake back in just so they don't give me any hassle and try my best to keep it out of full boost. I'll update when I know anything more.

Update on this: apparently I have squeaky cooling fans. Time to break out the WD40.

Rear sway bar and shift cable bushings will be ordered on the 18th, and then small mods are officially on hold to save up for coilovers.

Forgot to update, sway bar is in. Dialed out much of the factory understeer which is great, though the stock tires leave much to be desired. They will probably get changed after I get the coilovers purchased. The shifter cable bushings were not ordered because Mark at SXTH Element lost his prototypes and has to make some new ones. So production on them is delayed slightly.

Went to the track last night to see if I could run a faster time since the temperatures were around 30 degrees cooler. First couple runs had me scratching my head, but after letting the car sit for about an hour and really concentrating on my launch and shift points, managed to put my car at the top of the leader board for 6MT equipped Sports. The fastest DCT car is running 14.0 @ 97 mph.

Small update. Roof spoiler and lowering springs on the way. Coilovers just weren't going to happen anytime soon and the guy I bought the springs through gave me a great deal so I went for it. Will be nice to get it lowered so I can start to purchase a bunch of the little things on my list. (like getting the center part of the doors covered in an alcantara material)

Here's the roof spoiler on another car:

And here's the drop with the springs. Not dumped, but not 4x4 either.

A few updates:
  1. Got my first dent. :( Shopping cart at Walmart. A cart guy was collecting next to it, I saw him looking at the car when I walked up. He went on some spiel about it being a customer, but I could see right through him. I made a fuss with management, they checked the security tapes and couldn't come to a conclusion but submitted an incident report anyway and wasted no time in sending me a check for the $120 I was quoted for paintless dent repair.
  2. I am currently planning and very soon implementing some changes to the wheels on the car. I am removing them on Monday and putting the stock wheels back on temporarily. The XXR's will then go to Wheel Specialists and have 5mm shaved off the back to change the offset to +47. Then they will go directly to the powdercoaters for a new dark gunmetal color, followed by installation of some 235/40R18 Falken RT615's.
  3. Ordering and installing shortly after Thanksgiving the SXTH Element 3" downpipe and shifter cable bushings. :D
Pics of the new stuff after it's all done...

Update on the wheels:

Decided to NOT spend over $500 re-doing the wheels that were on the car, and instead purchased some Motegi Traklite MR131 in satin black. After I sell the XXR's, I'd actually come out slightly ahead than I would have with the modifications. Purchasing tires on Friday, Traklites are already on their way. Should be mounted and on the car sometime next week. 👍

I'm surprised by the gap in times between the DCT and manual, does the Elantra Sport have the same issue as every other manual Hyundai/Kia I've driven where it momentarily cuts power once the clutch fully engages?

Only with traction control on. Simple press of a button and you're good to go. For me it's more than being fast, nothing like an engaging drive with a manual.

Exhaust is on and......

Also installed the Pierce Motorsports 2-point lower front tie bar and the SXTH Element shift cable bushings (replaces the bushings where the shift cables attach to the trans) then did some late night mountain testing with a 350Z, GTO and Focus RS. 👍
