Mitsubishi unveils its US-spec 2008 Lancer Evolution at the LA Auto Show, boasting a turbocharged 4B11 engine that "produces more power than its predecessor: 291 hp at 6,500 rpm (vs. 286 hp at 6,500 rpm) and 300 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,400 rpm (vs. 289 lb.-ft. at 3,500 rpm)."

When it comes to inner workings, the GS rides on 18-inch Enkeis. The MR gets 18-inch BBS forged alloys, as well as Bilstein shock absorbers, Eibach springs, and 2-piece rotors. Voila. Lancer Evo X pricing according to one source will be around $30,000 for the GSR, and $36,000 for the MR. -techeblog.com

And yet I still like the R32 better... Huh.

Despite being a die-hard Subaru fan & owner (and I've said this many times before), this car is fantastic.

They just need to add more lightness.

I guess high performance cars arent for everybody.

But you cant deny thias thing looks a million times better (exterior) than any Golf.👍

I've driven the R32 a couple (my uncle has one) and its a very quick , and it looks 100 times better than the Evo and the interior of Golf is much better also

A million times better than any Golf? I don't know about that, but this at the very least "stands out" against it and the STi for being strikingly awesome.

Don't get me wrong, I love my high-performance cars like anyone else, but I also like the strong sensibility of the R32 both on and off the track. Yes, its quite a bit heavier, has a V6, and isn't nearly as quick, but the balance makes it a wonderful machine to live with every day.

I'd happily take the Evolution GSR over the STi, but I'd take the R32 over both. Thats just me though. Too bad Ford and GM haven't gotten around to making AWD hot-hatches for the US market, as if I were to consider the MKII Focus ST500 as well, that may in fact bump the STi and GSR down as well.

Then again, what am I saying? I still want a GD Renaultsport Megane R26...

An Evo makes the R32 look like a grannies car. The R32 isnt even that fast. The Evo is mental, the R32 is far from it, its a relaxed quickish car with a nice interior.

And thats exactly why I like it... A fun car for "grown ups."

But arent you a bit young? I was pondering between what to get for my next car the other day. I really like the mk2 TT, A5 and 3 series coupe. However I feel that at my tender age it would be wrong for me to buy such a relaxed mature car. Im young and should therefore drive something that is harsher, less refined, more mental, more in your face.

Next car therefore will be a Evo or STI unless insurance costs over 3 grand. If it does i'll probably get a quattro turbo TT or some top of the range SEAT.

I'll be 21 a week from Tuesday, so I really wouldn't consider myself "too young" for that. Considering the cars I'd be looking at right now if I were in the $30 shoppe:

- Mustang GT
- Camaro Z/28
- Challenger R/T
- Golf R32
- Golf GTI/ Jetta GLI
- Cadillac CTS

Yeah, my tastes are a bit "grown up" I suppose.

Id get the camaro or challenger. Although I suppose i can see the appeal of a R32 to you more than me because golfs are like BMW's in the UK eveyone and their mother has one.

I don't really get the R32. True, it has the bigger engine and such, but doesn't the weight and AWD system make it not much faster than a GTI? The biggest advantage I see is not having to worry about shredding the tires at every stoplight. It is only .4 seconds faster to 60, and I'm sure the MkVI will bring that down even lower. IMO, it's not worth the extra $10k, and plus, it's not a GTI. Maybe add a little more power and mid mount the engine and we'll talk:tup:.

That said, I would gladly take an EVO over the R32, partly because I am still into these kinds of cars.

And Mustang and CTS aside, I think YSS has a very respectable list of cars. The only thing I would add is either an A4 or the new C320. And that list is something I will be looking at pretty well because there is a small chance that we are in that market again sometime soon if I can convince my parents to get another car.....

I wouldn't buy an EVO.. I would go for an R32. :O I don't know.. The new EVO looks awesome in one way, but in another it looks butt ugly. Just.. Look at the rear end of the car! :odd:

Looks, my friend, looks. The two cars are too different in approach to flat out say which is better. And again, the Evo and Sti arent American or German (or british). ;)

Personally, I cant say Id buy any of the cars mentioned here, as they are getting too close to G37, A4 or 3-series price territory. Well, the Sti is here. They dont sell R32s and we dont know about the Evo yet.

They need to make a coupe version. with 4-door chassis it's like Rose-Anne Barr with Jessica Alba's face.

I guess that means it can kick your butt and be cute doing it?
I like the new car but not as much as I would if the styling was just a little different.

+1. I think that is how a lot of us feel around here. And that seems to be a general trend among a lot of new cars...

I like the GT-R, I like the Evo...

and I REALLY like that the Evo is the same power for $5k less than the STI. (well, For the 5-speed stick, which is what I'd want, anyway. Or...maybe I could spring for the "DSG"...Oh, I don't know...)

Meh, skip the DSG. Real men row their own gears...

I'll second that. You want a track car? DSG is the faster route every time. No doubt about that. You want more involvement out of your drive? Change gears with your whole arm, not just your finger. Find the throttle/clutch/brake balance yourself, don't let the computer do it for you. It's slower, it's potentially damaging, but so much more rewarding when you get it right.

That being said, I am unaware if Mitsu will allow the DSG to shift like a real transmission. If that is the case, I may be swayed from my love of the stick shift.

I think you're right. A recent read (Sport Compact Car) stated that there's a few modes, but the "hardest" one still shifted up at redline. That is, it's not a true manual mode (like SMG, for example). I like the car, but I think it should have had the 6-speed manual as an option, good though the 5-speed may be.

But I'm sure someone will crack the codes for DSG/TCCSSTSTST (whatever Mitsubishi's calling it). Time + determination = cracked. Always has, always will.

And real men also lose races because their egos are bigger than their brains... DSG = Faster = Better.

Talk smack about me if you want... I know how to drive manual, I do it well and enjoy it at times. However, that doesn't change the fact that technology is slowly and surely making the traditional manual an inferior choice of transmission. :indiff:

Lose what races? Do you street race on regular basis? And also as far as I know, if you want to actually "race" at a track, you need to have a full rollcage on the car and also a racing license and hopefully the car is part of some class. Otherwise if you just take this car to the track, they're only gonna let you do lapping.

I personally see no greatness in the DSG. I couldn't imagine driving my current Lancer with flappy paddle semi-auto gearbox.

I think Kent is getting at the fact a good chunk of people do track days, especially over in Europe. If you're looking for the final word on quick lap times, the DSG is the thing to do it in. Say what you want about involvement, no human can shift as quick as it, and shift times can add up to a good chunk of lost momentum over a lap.

I don't see why some tech advances are seen as so bad and others are raved about. If you want your car to be fastest, then you're going to have to relinquish a bit of control to a computer in this case. The Evo doesn't exactly strike me as a "sheer enjoyment of driving" kinda car anyways. It's always been about demolishing a specific route as quickly and efficiently as possible. This makes perfect sense then.
