Im using internet explorer 6 and when I download lets say a document or an image using the Open Now or Save To pop up menu when it starts to download I get wierd flashing Chinese writing on the top of the window where it should be saying the download speed... The speed will occasionally show and then flicker away. It seems to happen more when I select open.

Because its so hard to explain ive uploaded a video... its not great and it goes quite quick but you will be able to see what Im talking about...

I dont get what on earth it is or how to fix it, there is nothing about it on the web... and Ive seen no bad effect on my system because of it, its just abit odd.

Can anyone shed some light on this, thanks

P.s., please dont say stuff like use firefox or ie7! I do use firefox aswell, IE7 is ulgy and counterintuative.

That's . . . . really odd.

My first suspicion is some kind of malware, a trojan or something. Antivirus isn't all that good with some of these, you might investigate Ad-Aware or Spybot if you're not already using them.

I'd have to agree. Either malware (spyware, virus, trojan, etc), or something got TOTALLY botched in your system :ill:

I just had another look, and the fact that you're downloading something with un-displayed characters in its name from a site that's an address, not a domain name, is suspicious. Perhaps the weirdness is something you've asked for???
Does it do this if you try to download, say TZEDIT.ZIP from Microsoft?

In that example I was downloading a document from an email attachment from my university email account (probably why its a numbered address) which I can guarantee is free of bad stuff, this also happens when downloading from hotmail or anything where I select open rather than save to... I originally was going to do the example with a picture but I downloaded too quick hence why I chose a document.

However it doesn't always happen, Like just now I tried downloading the Vista upgrade advisor from MS's download center and it didnt happen... So maybe where you download from affects it. It is by far the oddest thing ive seen happen to IE!

I will try and do some more spyware scans but I do keep my computer well protected and run scans regularly, I even did that windows core file scan to see if everything is intact afew days ago. Being on a university network which is probably protected by some all mighty firewall also helps so I don't think this problem is malware related, it must be something I have installed or mucked up.

.... You just gotta love Internet Explorer! :sly:

Thanks for all the replys :)

Yeah, now that I thought to actually check it, that IP belongs to Microsoft, located in Mountain View, CA.
