What causes network to disconnect prior to online race

I'm really getting frustrated with trying to race in the online sessions. It seems that more than half the time, either I fail to connect to the event or after it connects it then drops me out of the event.

What are the common causes for this?

Not enough bandwidth or Wireless connection. These have been the common issues for me and those I have seen.
The other may be server issues... but we can't do anything about that.
