What ever happened to the fun of Gran Turismo

The game just felt rushed. Many things from the previous games are missing entirely, I think that was the big issue. If it was GT4 with shiner graphics + Bspec with fast forward, I honestly don't think that people would've had that much of a problem with it. Rather instead, in the 5 years we've waited for this game, we ended up with a game that has less races and events than GT3, with more cars than GT4 and no way to even get them unless we sat in front of the game for a conisderable amount of time because the reward system doesn't reward the input.

With that said, the game is still a blast whenever you're driving, but when you're trying to get that new car or even find the Group C LM car you want after grinding for hours..it's quite hard to swallow the game, especially since it seems like PD just artificially lengthened the game.

And the laughably small amount of championships (there was more in GT3 for god's sake) coupled with the small amount of cash rewarded per race makes this game very hard to bear, especially since even the endurance races offer little reward, as fun as some of them may be.

THIS^^^^👍

I have liked all GT games, played the original when I was something like 8 years old. And up until GT5 every game has had decent improvement. But waiting for 5-6 years for GT5, having all that time to get excited about it just led me to be pretty disappointed. Now don't take my comment the wrong way... I still ENJOY GT5 a lot, I'm a level 30 A-spec and have just basically stopped caring about leveling up anymore (it'll happen when it happens). Now I'm playing mostly online, It's a blast. I've been lucky to find some gtp members here at this website and race mainly with those guys, it's always fun clean competetive racing.

Complaining is something we'll have to get used to, there's no way around it.

Every major video game company/video game fanbase has been following this trend lately and Gran Turismo as we can see, is no exception to this rule; it was just a late comer since it took so long for the game to come, so it's a lot more obvious in this case.

Sure some of the mass complaining you see today will go away as the game improves, but there will remains flaws about the game that people will complain about when all is said and done.

There are good things and bad things about this.

Bad: People will get fed up with the huge amount of complaints and leave for awhile. It makes the complainers look like a larger group then they really are.

Good: With a louder voice, it forces the company to listen to fan's suggestion for the next thing they do or add in what they want for a patch.

Also remember that when it comes to the complainers, they are almost assuredly a minority, so when it comes to a video game/video game company, most people do like what they do for the most part. That's one thing I always keep in mind when joining an active gaming forum like this. :sly:

The fun came with pre-order, didn't you get the secret code for it?

Yep i got it and it's still there.

stadti -You should learn to read more carefully before you write something in reply. I wrote:" If you find a track you like and you absolutely enjoy driving then you can be sure you will get bored of it after about 1-2 weeks because you have driven every singe car which is competitive and allowed for at least a dozen times. "

Take the ring for example. I absolutely enjoy driving it, and for the last 3 weeks solely drove the ring. However at the moment I have about 270 cars, there are more than 1000 as you said. So I prefer grinding the ring to grinding Indy, because Indy is boring and the ring is fun for me. However there are only 3 ring races that decently pay. And with decently i mean more than 20k credits per race which is absurdly litte. 2 out of the 3 have as requirement german cars, or dtm, the other one cars around 350-410 kW. So in these 3 weeks I bought every german car I could find and every DTM and increased or decreased the power to make it competitive to the AI. Now I even master the yellowbird (I dare say the most hardest to drive car in the game) nearly flawless on the ring with driving aids of, because i repeated it so often. So what to do now? Drive the next track until it gets boring? repeat every race with every competitive car as often as possible?

As I said before, all the training mode + aracarde mode are a waste of time for me, because my goal is to collect all the cars. Until now I have 270 so there are a hell of them missing, and nearly all the 20 mill cars. So how should I get them? By playing the training mode? by doing the go card races for the 10th time? Or by the second part of the game i really enjoy, by doing rally races. Oh all of them don't pay, so no more cars to enjoy and having fun.

And for the online fun. Personally I like online play, never had a problem with it in other games. However in GT5 online play is just a bad joke (or I'm the unluckiest player concerning the people I'm playing with). 50% of the rooms are crowded with small kids who don't know how to drive, 45% of the rooms are crowded with racists who call me a n*zi because I'm from austria and kick me outright, and the remaining 5% are not worth the effort. So the online fun for me is absolute no fun.

First I cant quote what you would like because you didnt say it. I assumed trophies would be important to you since they usually are with people who are so concerned with how many credits they get for each race. To me its just fine the way it is. There is more than one way to get more credits. Theres the offline, online, plus Remote Races. Ive used all three and trust me with 160= cars in my collection and close to 6 million in available credits im not worried about the payouts. Im sorry about that.

I also dont understand people who complain about doing races over and over (Grinding). Using Online, Offline, and Remote Races means I dont have to grind away at anything. Im also in no rush. I dont have 20 million credit cars. But I will when the time comes. Till then I have 160 to work with. Learning to drive them properly, tuning them, and learning to drive them again.

As for online well im offended ( Not really) because my room is part of the 5% thats not worth it. Or so you say. There are close to 30 of us that race together off and on and we race as clean as we can, we are not racists, we welcome people from all over the world into our rooms, we also race semi serious. No ones going to get all bent out of shape because of an accident or because they lost. If your not taking part in some of the online racing that takes place then yeah this game is going to be worthless for you very soon. Your welcome to race with us. We race on Wed and Sat at 8pm Est. But there are also practice sessions and some other races people have on other days. You need some online friends to race with bro. Send me a friend request PSN- IFLATLINEI

Definitely buying YOUR car and tuning it/making it a beast is one of the pinnacles of the GT experience. i agree with you 100% on that. one of my complaints about this GT compared to past GTs is the small number of tracks. the scenery and layouts get really redundant. i think the game would have been better off with fewer cars and more tracks(not variations). If they had put in a lot of the tracks from 2 & 3 that have only seen 1 or 2 games, it would have really thrown out some nostalgic hooks for a lot of people, the problem with a lot of the real world tracks is that the scenery is pretty similar for a lot of them. not that they shouldn't be in but they should have thrown in other tracks to break up the monotony.

Other than that, my only real complaint is the XP system cuz it detracts from the point of the game IMO, and the license tests feel dumbed down but since they don't really count there's no real point in doing and/or getting all golds. The license system used to separate the men from the boys, the XP system separates the boys from the men, and by that i mean a lot of those in my age group( I'm 33) don't have time for all that grinding to get to the cars and races that we might like. I get your point about making your own experience with the game but because of the XP system, it really limits my ability to do that especially compared to past GTs. My only option is either to XP grind to get it out of the way or to go through the game race by race getting all golds in the LTs and SEs at which point i still have to grind after level 25-30 to be done with it. bottom line, XP is a detraction from the gameplay and it limits me in my ability to make my own experience.

Thanks for being respectful in your previous response BTW.

I really cant comment on the tracks from GT4. I honestly dont remember how many there were. But Im looking at 80+ right now. I realize they are variations and such and it is kind of a lame way to up the track count but they are also usefull in many cases. Some cars would just be stupid on some tracks but just fine for others. I dont think any other PS3 racing game has anywhere close to GT5's content and thats the real comparison. Let GT4 go that was 5 years ago! LOL I wouldnt have had a problem with less cars more tracks though. Good point!

As for the XP system and License tests I can only say this. Things changed. We have real online now. Were not trying to rig up a connection through X-Link Kai and we dont have to try and make do with one of those other garbage racing titles for the PS3. You make valid points and I would agree with those points except with real online those things are almost irrelevant. Online is the main focus now. The rest is just gravy. Its a stepping stone to get ya started and revisit when time allows. Of course this means nothing if you have no one to race with. Your also welcome to send me a friends request and get in on some online racing. See my previous post.

The fun factor was reduced substantially when PD for some odd/unknown reason decided to do the following:

(1) Completely discard the license progression system.
(2) Neuter the prize car system that formerly allowed one to obtain highly desired vehicles like the F1 and Sauber C9 (as prize cars).
(3) Disallow the sale of more expensive prize cars and those purchased with credits. The later being especially irksome.

If one of PD's goals was to make the offline game experience in GT5 more fun that GT4, they failed miserably.

To me, some of the fun of Gran Turismo was lost in GT5, and I think many people feel the same way.

It's not fun to finally overcome that epic championship series and get rewarded with a lame prize car like what happens with even most of the late game events.

It's not fun to race the Dream Car Championship (a joke whenever the Jaguar enters, which is most of the time) over and over again and realize that you're still several million credits short of that F2007/F10/Ford GT40/Ferrari P4.

It's not fun running thousands of laps around an oval track if by some reason you want to collect a bunch of expensive cars that you enjoy driving and/or want to try out...Rally, LMPs, Group C, Super GT, etc.

It's not fun having a game with 1000 cars and feeling like you only have access to a fraction of that because so many of them are lumped into a used car dealership which is also filled with dozens of duplicate cars and ("dupers aside") god forbid that anyone would want to trade for a rare car somehow.

It's not fun when most of the "marquee" events in the game are disappointments - Dream Car Championship, GT World, Super GT, Polyphony Digital Cup... Not every race has to be (or should be) like the Historic Racing Cup, but they shouldn't be runaways either.

It's not fun running 5 laps of Cape Ring Full over and over again because the track list is on the short side.

Yes, I'm exaggerating a little with each of those points. None of them make me want to snap my GT5 disc in half and throw it in the street, but all of these little annoyances take away some of the overall fun of the game.

GT5 is still a great game. I enjoy playing it every time I boot up my PS3. It's fun taking a BMW M3 to Nurburging. It's fun making laps around Suzuka in a Super GT NSX. Some of the most fun I've ever had playing GT5 was when a friend and I saw how far we could push the '06 Focus ST on High Speed Ring. The Historic Racing Cup and a few other events were awesome!

But why does GT5 have to be "just" a driving simulator? Why can't it be a racing simulator? And why can't it be a well laid out racing game while we're at it? I think the fact that GT5 struggles to put these three together is what many people are frustrated about.

Spot on. 👍

As a long time fan of the series (GT1 100% complete and all gold licenses), it seems that PD somehow managed to remove many of the best features from the prior four main releases and add new features that either don't work well or are a royal pain in the backside. This was done with such precision that it almost seems like evil forces were at work ... 💡

Yes the reward system and AI are flawed as well as the events

^^ This. After 6 years they could have put more events in A spec, and beta tested or thought up a better leveling system. Someone said you get 1m xp for completing all A spec bar the endurance (and specials and licences), and you need 29m xp to complete. And I think they doubled the xp rewards in 1.07, so it shows how broken it was. It breaks my heart a little bit when I go back to an old licence and gold it and get about 1000 xp and find I only need another 800,000xp to level up

I suspect the game will be a lot more fun when I get to level 40 and only play it for fun

I'm also waiting for this day. When once a week I can razz round in time trial with a couple of my favourite cars with no "need" to gain xp or cash.

The fun went when PD went away from the economics of the previous versions. GT5 HAS a crap economy FACT. Cars are TOO expensive, not enough races with far too low monetary rewards, to add insult to injury they increase the rewards in one patch then reduce it BACK down a bit later....hello...Mcfly!

I argree with this... It has been so difficult to progress in this game monetarily since: 1.) Cars and upgrades are too damn expensive, 2.) Cash rewards are too little, and 3.) Prize cars are just a one time deal (as opposed to the previous series' reward system where you still get a prize car regardless of how many times you've done a particular race, which makes racing less of a chore to earn Cr). These all led people to doing everything from exploiting the birthday "cheat", to duping, to "abusing" the trading system - which then led to more restrictions by PD. If PD made the money/rewards system like they did before, I think those problems could have been avoided.

Aside from that, everything else is more or less good enough to be called a legitimate "Gran Turismo".

the GT series is the BESTseries of games I ever played GT3 and GT4 were awesome because there was more challenge and fun but I do appreciate that it's so much easier to play with your friends thanks to GT5's online capabilities you can play with other people all over the world and right now I am contented with being A-Spec level 32 and now all I do usually are take pictures, drift, time attack and play online even though I have 146 cars I am happy because I get to drive them all unlike having 1000+ cars that you just showoff
