What is up with the charts nowadays?!Music

Sorry... this must have been said before, but I just gotta rant.

This is one of the things that has pee'd me off ever since I got Freeview, and thus access to the two music stations. All I EVER see is Britney Spears, or "Basshunter", or - even worse - Leona Lewis, and all those other stupid "X Factor" winners. I hate it. They play dreadful "Ne-Yo" all darn day - one single of his I saw played around five times a day. What does it take to get something decent once in a while, like Kings of Leon's "Sex On Fire" or maybe a track or two from the new AC/DC or Guns N' Roses album? Maybe some Paramore or Bowling for Soup?

Most of the music nowadays is just dreary, saccharine rubbish that is sung by talentless, useless people with nothing better to do. Listen to the awful "Womanizer" by Britney - she sounds, to me, like a deranged old man.

I know, I know, my signature says I'm fourteen - but despite my age I do feel that the music my fellow teens listen to is repetitive rubbish.

I say bring back Bob Seger! "The Fire Inside" is 100% better than Britney's entire back-catalogue.

Sorry... I just needed to rant :grumpy:

You have to remember this: Not everyone likes the same music. I personally can not stand AC/DC, King's of Leon or Guns 'N Roses and I down right despise anything by Paramore. This is not to say I like Britney Spears either.

Trends in music change quite a bit and the newest trends are going to be the most popular. It doesn't mean you have to listen to the songs, buy (or download) the albums, or listen to the radio station that plays them. If you like rock music then by all means listen to what you like and just avoid the songs you do not like. Also support the artist you enjoy by going to the concerts.

I hear what your saying but its not just 'nowadays'. Radio stations always plays the same popular songs again and again and again especially during prime time. Just change the channel every now again or just dont listen to certain shows.

I can't believe that the X Factor version of 'Hallelujah' got to number 1 instead of Jeff Buckley....people in this country are buying this X Factor crap just because it's been on TV.

The main problem in this country is chavs buying what they're told is good by music channels and Radio 1. Katy Perry is a good example of this, her first song only became so popular because of the content (I kissed a girl and I liked it), her 2nd track has been nowhere near as popular and I've been told by people who liked her first single that her album is terrible too.

People need to learn to think for themselves instead of being told what to like by TV and radio. Especially when it comes to the X Factor.

You want to get Sky Digital. Kerrang show your bands all day long dude. Along with much Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers etc.

The only thing I've noticed is that the UK charts are always wonky compared to what we have here in the States. I'll pick and choose my way through your guy's lists for songs that will eventually become popular here, but nevertheless, you Britons always have odd songs scattered about the list.

But, like Joey pointed out, the feelings of what makes some music "good" versus what may be "bad" is otherwise subjective. I like being an elitist bastard and boycotting much of the stuff thats played on the radio here, demanding that they play my music, but thats what I have an iPod for. That, and I'm sure there are millions of Americans who wouldn't really want to listen to my band(s) 24/7.

If you don't like it, upgrade to some digital broadcast. I have XM in 2 of my cars because I can't stand what's always played on regular radio (unless it's Jack FM). XM, though, gives me so many channels of 1 genre. 4 Hip-Hop/Rap, around 7-9 Rock stations, and so much more. Hell, these digital stations will also dedicate a channel to just one band. I spent a month listening to Metallica's station, and now listen to AC/DC & Led Zeppelin's channel.

I'd say more about not everyone liking the same music, but Joey has covered it quite well. 👍

Oh god no Hot and Cold is alot more popular than i kissed a girl,The radio station that gets played in work (cant remember what its called) Hot and Cold gets played at least 7 times a day every day (thats from 8am - 5pm) and yes i have been counting how many times it gets played.

Dont see why Jeff Buckley should have had it at number 1 ether it wasnt his song...

And stupidly, people bought Jeff Buckley's version as a protest (and Leonard Cohen's original made it into the Top 40 too) - considering that Sony BMG get the money from all versions of the song, though, it was a bit of a daft protest... not least because a real fan of Jeff Buckley would almost certainly have had the song already ;)

Most of the music nowadays is just dreary, saccharine rubbish that is sung by talentless, useless people with nothing better to do.

It always has been. In fact, most of the "classic rock" (like Bob Seger) is also rubbish, it's just rubbish that has stood the test of time for some reason. Every time I hear That Old Time Rock and Roll I want to scream at him: "If you love that old time rock and roll so much, why did you write this boring repetitious piece of crap that sounds nothing like it?!"

Talent is talent. If you're looking at the commercial music industry, you're looking in the wrong place. Sometimes talent makes it commercially; sometimes not. But commercial music has always been and will always be about image first and music second.

The problem is how you define talent. Leona Lewis has an amazing voice but I'm sure she couldn't write a song to save her life, but that doesn't mean she is a bad artist. Has anyone hear ever tried rapping? I sure as hell couldn't so surely that should be classed as a talent. On the same level I don't think I could ever play the guitar which again is an amazing talent.

Surely music is about what sounds good to you. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks, after all, it's there for your enjoyment. If you don't like what the chart offers, you have an absurd number of other resources to get your music from which will please your ears all day.

I feel that people can become very judgemental when it comes to the music tastes of others and I find it really frustrating. Even if they don't actually tell you what they think I'm sure alot of people will immediately judge you (especially on forums as they have normally never met you in person).

If somebody posted in this thread now that they thought Alexandra Burkes version of Hallelujuah was better than Jeff Buckleys I would like to see the responses to it.

I totally agree, I hate Xfactor and I can't stand the way TV has turned into mostly reality TV. They do this because its cheap to make and it rakes in viewers and cash via phone in's. Stations just can't be bothered investing in good dramas or series with good scripts and casts.

As for the Xmas number 1 its terrible because every year since xfactor became big the xmas hit is always going to be some tat cover from that show. Every knows now its nearly impossible for anyone else to claim the top spot. Now if this girl had done something original fair play but a cover of a song which everyone knows is guarenteed gold is just a cheap shot.

Jeff Buckley totally deserved the support he got and its nice to see a christmas spirit type of situation occur just through people on the net with no funding or paid advertising whatsoever. Everyone knows his version is the definitive one and it has so much soul. Im glad it once again got some recognition and maybe introduced his talent to some for the first time. Number 2 is excellent but I wish it really had been number 1 just to prove a point.

Ok, yes the money all went to Sony but its not that big a deal, people have paid far more to prove even lesser points. At the simplest level the guy died and it was tragic, people owe it to him especially at Xmas to have his work recognised as one of those legendary pieces of music. Yeah most fans would have already owned the song but people will buy stuff again especially if they are dedicated. For that matter why do people buy greatest hits albums, they probably already have all the songs.

All this also made Cohen happy because he gets the reconition and he also agrees that Jeff's version is unmatchable.

I can't even remember the xfactor winners name now! thats how memorable contestants on reality shows are!

Oh and Merry Christmas you guys :sly:

Robin.

It's obviously fixed. They get number one every year. Leon sucked, and he got no.1, but he only won because all the girls loved him.

And Buckley's version was released in... what century?

The charts are the charts are the charts. Whatever is "in" at the moment is "in", whether it's total rubbish or what. That's the way it has been since they started doing these on-air popularity and sales contests. Sometimes what's "popular" is good, sometimes it isn't. Like Duke has said... some "classics" are rubbish... just rubbish that has stood the test of time. And while I'll listen to "retro" stations to try to cut down the amount of modern rubbish I hear, there are soome absolutely horrible tracks that still get air-time there. (If I hear "Joni Joni please don't cry" between Beatles and Stones tracks one more time... :ouch: ).

Thus the reason why I don't listen to the Radio anymore. As Alex said about himself , the bands that you like can generally be found somewhere on TV. I leave my TV on Kerrang or Scuzz when I want to listen to music and that generally fulfills my need. Or better still, buy the artist you like's albums and just listen to that instead.

On the topic of X Factor, I too am well and truly fed up with it. The last decent one was Leona Lewis and I only say that due to the fact she was a talented singer. Granted she wouldn't be able to write a song but she can sing. X Factor should just finish itself off, although I can't see it happened they make too much money from it.

Chart music 98% of the time is absolute ****.
Too much RnB (which actually does rhythm & blues an injustice), too much hardcore chav music (basshunter, cascada, n-dubs).
I dj at a local pub in Hereford and unfortunately have to buy the latest 'NOW' albums to update my collection. Out of a double cd i'm lucky if i've got 3 or 4 decent songs I actually like.
I still end up playing classic disco tunes from the 70's and pop from the 80's.
Doesn't matter how old you are, people seem to know all the words to the old stuff.
20 years from now I don't think we'll be singing along to Soulja Boy or Kate Nash.

the majority of the market is pre teens and housewives who get their tastes manipulated by the repetition that surrounds them, its on tv and radio, in films, clubs etc. to 'appeal' to a majority they have to keep it bland and pale and very very general, sometimes awful covers of decent songs or bought because *teehee* someone said a naughty *teehee*
im sure they know that the smart people will progress and search for better and interesting real music so they dont bother playing any most of the time. fortunately radio1 has the rock show, or the punk show, a decent indie slot too even if they are put on late at night and peel has sadly gone. the daytime is spent bombarding the ears of the potential buyers!
xfactor will last for a while because it gives people that can't sing the idea that they actually have a chance at getting what every greedy chav wants, money for zero effort, even if they are the ones being bled for money. (if youv got a good sob story its a head start!) it sells well as people like to observe others misfortune or lack of reality.
