I use Windows XP primarily now since Windows Vista can't play any games of mine yet. But when Vista can, I'll use Vista primarily :)

I want a Mac though, so when I DO buy a Mac, I'll boot camp Vista to it.

I use XP now, and will continue to use XP until Microsoft drops it. Then I will say the hell with it and boot camp a Mac with Windows 2000 I still have an installation disc for it that was never used).

At home, it's always Tiger.

I've gone through many OSes on the Dell though. It started with Windows XP SP2 (Home Edition), then I installed various Linux distros and different builds of Vista. I've now settled with Ubuntu 6.10.

I'll probably stick with Ubuntu because I really like where they are heading with the project. Unless of course, the Fedora or openSUSE team comes up with something spectacular.

AFAIK, Windows 2000 isn't compatible with Boot Camp. Parallels is, however.

You seem to be right. So the hell with it. I'll just throw together some cheapo rig whenever XP is killed by Microsoft and use a Mac without Boot Camp.

I once bought a computer that was preloaded with Windows ME (Millenium Edition). It was the worst operating system of all time. Now I use XP, and have had nary a problem since installation two years ago.

First person who uses Vista primarily eh?
This machine here runs Vista and I use it for web browsing, MSN-ing, oohing and aahing at Aero etc etc.
My other machine (my gaming machine) runs XP PRO SP2, and I primarily use it for gaming, and occasionally browsing if I wanna look something up.

I use Windows XP Professional primarily, will move to Vista as needed ASAP. My job is supporting business customers on networks served primarily by Windows Servers. 99.99999% of our customers' desktops are Windows-based, mostly XP Pro, some 2000 left out there, and even 95 and 98 once in a while.

Not looking forward to Vista, having to explain to most of our customers that none of the new flash will run on their PCs, all they get is another re-arrangement of all the familiar menus and control panels, and some security enhancements. Not to mention having to explain why there are [EXAGGERATION] 38 [/EXAGGERATION] "versions" of Vista.

Agreed with previous post about uselessness of Windows ME. What a crock! And because it was the latest (at the time), it HAD to be on every home machine you could buy at any store. Just like Windows for Workgroups 3.11 back in the early 90s. No usefulness to most customers, but had a higher version number, so it HAD to be better than Windows 3.1, right?

Other Server OS's I deal with are SCO Open Server and Netware.

XP Pro on the desktop
XP Pro on the laptop
W2K Pro/Red Hat dual boot on the old desktop
XP Pro on the old laptop

Toss up between Windows XP Pro and Vista, really just depends on what I'm doing. I also use Ubuntu Linux, Mac OS X, and Server 2003 on the side.

I use Mac OS9.2 - but there's no option for that in the poll.
Woah – any reason for not switching to OS X? Seriously, it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. ;) I almost ditched the Mac platform because I didn’t see too much difference between OS 8/9 and Windows, but OS X changed all that.

I'll add another Ubuntu user here :)

I tried Fedora 3, got used to it and ditched Windows. I don't game on the PC so it was no loss. Then I got annoyed with Fedora 4 and tried Ubuntu, and I haven't looked back since. For me Ubuntu absolutely rocks, especially with Beryl desktop effects - makes Vista and OSX look pretty dull to be honest :)

Ubuntu is the future as far as I'm concerned, and the fact it's free - that's a bonus :D :D

Did you ever try Fedora Core 5? It was my favorite of the big three (SUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora) during that generation.

Of course, now that I've got Novell's Gnome Main Menu and Fedora's (still unfinished) Echo icon theme in combination with Edgy's pure awesomeness, I think I'll stick with Ubuntu. Can't wait for Feisty.

I might make the move to Kubuntu once KDE4 comes out though. That is, of course, if KDE4 lives up to the hype.

I use Windows 2000 for all my computers, and I am very satisfied with it. It does everything I want, is very stable, has no unneccesary colour and animation stuff that slows the system down and hits just the right spot between operating hardware and being easy to use. Every other OS I've tried didn't work as well for me.

I just wonder a bit that 2000 is in the same option as 98. :odd:

I have no choice but to use Windows XP Pro as primary OS right now, as I haven't got the hang of my second OS yet... I also need to re-install Ubuntu because I fked something up in it (what ? that happens...). So I'll need to re-install it fresh, learn more, find replacement to my Windows software and then I'll be set up to stop using Microsoft except for games...

No, I never tried FC5 - after being disappointed with 4, and the fact that by then I was extremely comfortable with the version of Ubuntu I was on (think it would have been Dapper?) I never really fancied trying any of the others.

Today, while I'm very happy with Ubuntu and still have no inclination to switch, I find it really encouraging that most of the major distros are all very close in terms of features, usability, eye candy, applications and so on. I always recommend Ubuntu, but I think it's fantastic that there are lots of options for those who want to investigate alternatives to the mainstream. It's never been better in the Linux world :D

Definitely not the case. 2000 was a huge step forward compared to 98 - it may not look that different, but under the hood it was a complete change in architecture. It was the first version of Windows that could realistically be used at home to be based on the NT codebase, which was a big change that had too many benefits to list here.

You misunderstood me. What I was wondering about was that in this poll, Windows 2000 and Windows 98 are one and the same option to choose, although they are very different. I think that was made because of lack of available options though.

Ah sorry, my mistake :)
