It's extremely ridiculous IF the release is delayed by the complaints of trees. No, please, I want the game not the 3D trees.

LOL I agree. Also I didn't even notice the trees, so they must be good this time. ( I used to be a big complainer about that on the earlier builds)

Somehow I have a feeling the game is ready, waiting for Sony's 3D :couldntcareless: TV launch...

2D trees in 3D! How funny is THAT? :sly:

I think I speak for all of the "stop complaining about the trees" crowd when I say:

Complaining about the trees in GT5 is sort of like complaining about the graphics on tetris. It just feels like you guys are missing the point.

Do the trees look good while driving down the track? Yes!

Otherwise...why care?

Gran Turismo is, has always been about the graphics, so you are kinda missing the point, too.
The problem seems to be people are so used to complain about the trees, they don't even notice the improvements. I said it before, PD knew there was something wrong and they changed it... now let me customise my game to my likings and give me a few little surprises (after all the wait...) and I'm super happy camper. ;)

The trees are so important in GT5, because it's probably one of the few things left to whine about.
Like, "look at Forza 3 - its cars ingame look like coloured piles of crap, but at least the trees are 3D!" :)
BTW, I'm very curious to see that GT trees in 3D-mode with 3D HDTV. I bet it looks great and the "3D-ness" of trees is naturally achieved that way.
I saw stereoscopic Motorstorm: Pacific Rift demo, and it looked gorgeously in 3D.

Tetris is about puzzles: Graphics do not matter

Gran Turismo is about racing: How trees look in a photo does not matter.

What is important is how they look while driving. And they look great while driving.

Does my example make more sense now? :sly:💡

Thanks for (some of) the replies guys :sly:

And I know this is a forum and people can have their opinions, that's fine obviously.
But complaining that 2d trees are ugly and PD should use 3d trees is another thing in my opninion.
As GTplanet members, I think I can say we all love the GT series and so we all should be thankful to PD.
That is the reason we shouldn't complain about (imo) non important things like the lack of 3d trees and why I started this topic.

So just so I understand, your complaining about people complaining? :P
I personally dont give a damn about a tree, I dont see them while racing, and during my replays im too busy holding and releasing the good ol' Triangle button:tup:

We agree on the most part, just I think for stuff like Photomode and "driving" not racing, it is important how everything looks.
And from what I see it will look great. So the only thing we not seem to agree is the importance of the matter, not the matter itself.

Why shouldn't people complain? There are numerous things regarding GT5 that are not quite there yet, and if all we did was sing its praises all day long, it would make for some pretty dull and uninspiring reading.

I'm sorry but why not? -> I don't want to wait another year for Gran Turismo 5.
Don't need them to focus on trees.
I hope if someone of PD comes along here,
he focusses on the fact that a lot of people are very happy with how the Ring looks.. and don't care about the trees (which in fact look A LOT better than GT4, so are very fine for me and a lot of people here)

To address this horrible environmental problem, they probably should implement the following real-time adjustment, as shown in signature:

Trees 2D....|....3D

Lol...you know, you guys are not doing this game any good, PD reads this forum....They know about how much we complain, Thus a lot of stuff has been changed or attempted... So I'm saying this with all my heart......

Please Just Shut up about the damn trees. Why not talk about....Oh i don't know, The Cars... Why trees? ...Seriously...I can see skid marks...You know what, not even that....not this Close to the hopefully"Grand finally"

Seriously, Are you the type of people that go in bumper cam...stop the car and look at the detail on the environments..

This is freaking Ridiculous... Make a Tree thread in the off topic section... We don't want to hear this crap, and we certainly don't want PD seeing it, Otherwise we will get a huge "Coming sooner then you expected" At E3.

It's not like trees are something that damages our playtime. But people are mentioning the trees because they are just last remembrance perceived from times of PS One and while everything other seems to be just marvelously polished this time, those cardboards are staying there like they used to when our game consoles were 50 times less powered. For use in those distant forests 2D trees are perfect but looking at 500.000 polygon cars surrounded by two cardboards is just weird combination.

Personally I think when we are talking here about that, guys in PD know well what the smart design is, they have already perfectly solved that problem and first row or two of surrounding trees on the Ring are richer versions as they are on Tokyo track everywhere.

There was one similar discussion some time before but some discussion haters closed that thread and attack people discussing about trees whenever it's possible. What a brave mission, guys! :dopey:

Why 2D trees are way to go?
Imagine how many time they need to spend to make Nurburgring trees all in 3D?
More of that - it's just not worth it.At least in current situation.(PS3,GT5,5-6yrs in development)

Right, instead they could model a BMW E36 and Ford escort Cosworth...!

Or the car in Reds avatar(Yellow bird)!!

....💡

Even the trees in oblivion aren't "true 3D" - they're done using early speedtree tech. As such, the leaves are in bunches as sprites, so they orient themselves to the camera at all times. There are several sprites for each branch, however, giving the necessary impression of layers and depth. The imposters for those speedtrees (introduced using LOD systems at further distances) are just X-style 2D billboards, excluding the trunks which are flat, camera-oriented billboards with partly transparent textures. Morrowind, I'm not so sure - I've not played the vanilla version fo' time, so I can't remember.

The trees in the Grand Canyon vid are the same.

We just need to ACCEPT - NO 3D trees in GT5.
(However in city tracks where trees are important they are 3D. (Tokyo,London etc)
Surely in GT6 they improve that.PS3 seems to be very powerful console! (God of War 3)

^^ The fact is, PD won't put 3D trees even in GT6. Can you imagine all the work and processing power required to put a bazillion of trees which surround the ring? Also, if you're driving reasonably fast, you can't notice how the trees look like even in the replays. That's a stupid and irrelevant detail.

Also, what Torque said is true, PD already told us that they have a professional which is responsible for getting feedback from forums and specialized websites, they will end up with another production issue: Make the development team stop laughing when Kaz demands another three months to build and model the 🤬 3D trees.

Some people just can't see the wood for the trees.

Ahem.

Skidmarks, thats whats more Fun/relevant/realistic/worthy/essential (delete as App) to Gran Turismo 5.

Seriously if we can get better tree's then that would be a nice.

No Skidmarks - that would be a crime.

I wanna lay down some rubber on every second gear corner and view it on the replay!

ditto.
It's about this contrast of practically perfect, almost CG quality cars in an environment filled with sprites, which were fine...10 years ago...
And as demonstrated, even GT4 had some 3d trees, and they aren't that taxing on the system, also higher quality trees would need to be just beside the track, cardboard ones are acceptable in the background.

Also, downplaying one fault to point out the other fault(skidmarks for example) in need of fixing is not a way to go. All the faults need fixing.

I am pretty fed up about people here complaining about 2d trees and i'm sure i'm not the only one.
The simple facts are these:

2d trees cost much less memory, proc. power etc..
From a front view 2d trees look more like real life trees.
While actually playing the game, you RACE past the trees.

Now with these facts to hand you can easily see why peope complain about 2d trees. Alot of complaints are about screenshots and it's clear that in screenshots the above facts are a bigger problem than in movies or gameplay.
In some screenshots and especially in gameplay movies I love the 2d trees. They look very real and most of the time you are looking at them from the right side. Also keep in mind that thanks to these 2d trees PD are able to make other things better like for instance the cars.
Please stop whining about 2d trees, accept them and more importantly, UNDERSTAND why PD uses them.

I agree, but some tracks do have nice 3D trees. I think on London map, since you dont have as many trees there you have them really nicely rendered. The Green Hell, it has thousands of trees, so PD really needs to save some memory. heck even on PC sim racing games, the Green Hell always uses 2D trees, its best way to save memory.

I shan't presume to suppose quite what you were trying to illustrate, but notice that there's only the one tree in the foreground; the ones in the distance are almost certainly billboarded.
The tree in the foreground also makes prolific use of billboarding, but in a very clever / subtle way. Of course, the trunk and boughs are a 3D mesh, but the leaves and smaller branches are "2D". This is all moot, though, since you "can't" have trees like that on the Nürburgring - there are simply too many to warrant such a budget per tree, unless some hefty, double-digit LOD switching is used.

That said, I'm surprised no-one's had a go at the grass in those screens...

I am no computer expert, but if the ring had only 3D trees then I dont think there is much more ps3 power left.. The way Pd have done it is great IMO, save the power for more important things 👍
