I just finished building my brothers new rig. However, it's hit a stumbling block at the very last step.

I cannot get the harddrive to be the Master IDE with the CD-Rom. It has the worlds shortest IDE ribbon with 'black' as the master and 'gray' as the slave.

I can get the DVD-Rom to be the master, with the harddrive as the slave. And I can get the harddrive to be the master on its own, but I cannot get the harddrive to be the master when the DVD-Rom is connected?

Is there anything in the bios that allows me to swap them over? Or do I need to go out and buy a second IDE ribbon?

Don't worry guys, I worked out the problem. Both the DVD-ROM and the HDD has jumper settings on Master (Why on earth is a DVD-ROM on Master....).

Yeah, short IDE ribbons suck, although long ones just get in the way of things...

Have you tried switching the jumpers on the drives themselves? Just set the DVD-Rom to the slave position, and the HDD to the master position (a sticker on the drive should tell you which pins to jump. If not, try the user's manual).

Edit: I see you already tried that. :)

I was about to say that there should be no restrictions whatsoever which device to make master and which to make slave on an IDE cable. Nice to see that you already found that out though. :sly:

Thanks for the help guys 👍

I actually just got another problem (My computer builds always have problems, but hey, at least the thread isn't dead!), it starts the XP Setup, does all that getting driver stuff, then I get a blue screen of death and something about 'pci.sys'. I'm making the assumption that it's the half-chewed XP CD my brother supplied me, or is it hardware related?
