windows is so dumb, it tries to close itself

Windows Explorer does not equal Windows. Therefore it is only closing a part of itself.

I still find it amusing when task manager is "not responding". What application kills the application killer...

It normally means Explorer got infected with some virus. It is surely stupid for Windows to kill Explorer, because it restarts right after it gets kill...

Nope, it only restarts if it had to be closed because of an error.
If you kill it manually you have to manually start it again.

NEver had an issue like that with my Explorer
Guess that pretty much makes you the man.

More seriously though; DEP is a hardware and software based security system which guards against malicious programs running in given computer's memory. When you receive and error like the one posted, it doesn't mean Explorer got infected, but that it did something it shouldn't have and Windows is afraid it may be infected, so it's shutting it down.

I like to think that XP has character. Makes life a little more interesting every day,

hmm, me to.
I tested it by using the pc for over 15 minutes after killing explorer, but it didn't get restarted automatically.

Windows works in mysterious ways :)

You two must've killed it differently. If you 'end task' in the applications tab of the task manager, Windows will automatically restart Explorer. However, if you 'end process' explorer.exe from the Processes tab, Windows will not restart Explorer automatically.

👍

I can only end the process in the processes tab, since it doesn't show up in my application tab.
Only programs like FireFox and such show up in the application tab.
Firewalls and all that is only in the processes tab.

Explorer will show up if it isn't responding, allowing you to end the task.

It depends on what the problem is. The only times my Explorer crashes is with certain video files. When you click on a file, or when you have it set to "Thumbnail" mode, it will read through the file to gather information about it. If the file has something wrong with it, then Explorer crashes in its attempt to read it.

In ALL cases where it's happened to me, it's always been a particular file that's easily identifiable. Either I avoid clicking on it, if it's something I want to keep (choosing instead to load it directly into WMP by File>Open, which causes no problems), or I simply delete the file if it's something I don't really care about. And no, they're not infected files.. my AV would catch them on the way in if that were the case.

I do CTRL+ALT+DEL and in processus (is it the same word in english ?) I kill explorer.exe. It restarts by itself.
