I currently use WinMX at home. But my dad is a bit worried about it as it is a P2P file sharing program. How secure is WinMX, does anyone else use it. Has anything bad happened. Please tell me all you know about it so that I can make an educated decision on whether or not to use it.

Thanks

Dunc

I'm not talking about piracy, I'm asking if this p2p file sharing program is secure. It's more of a security related thread than a piracy related thread.

But thanks for answering my question.

No P2P app is secure. It's a risk you have to take.

The most secure networks however are probably Direct Connect, eDonkey/Mule and Bit Torrent.

bittorrent is probably the least secure of them :). The user's ip addresses are broadcast publically.

There's this one p2p network that's next to impossible to crack - i forget the name but it operates on an invitation basis only. Anyone can create their own server(s) but to join, you'd need a military grade encryption key generated by the app

That would be Waste.

but it was origanely a nullsoft program ment for file sharing and chatting amoungst small buisnesses.

Yeah, but the RIAA and such don't give a **** about BitTorrent...

I'm suprised this thread hasn't been pwned yet.
Well, as far as I can gather, nothing talked about here is against the AUP. Talking about the P2P apps themselves is completely legit, but when you start talking about what you do with those P2P apps, chances are it's against the AUP...

bit torrent is ok, and also "soul seek" shame ive only got a 56k connecton :indiff:

This is correct. I have removed 5 words from the original post to bring it back into line with site policy.

Thanks Giles, and the rest of you (apart from sUn!)

I think I have a good Idea of what to do now.

I thought it was kinda stupid for Dqan to post this but it's pretty damn hilarious what Tabs said.

It wasn't stupid, I just wanted information on a program.

I am so sending this thread to RIAA.

The RIAA can kiss my home free european ass :)

back on topic : you can always make it safe(r) by not doing any stupid stuff [for example, don't download cracks from them] and if you are on broadband a firewall never hurts.
