ok i am begging for help at this point. i am a wireless moron. as with everyone else that has said they know but refused to help. i dont believe them. they all keep saying you got it right it should work. well, it doesnt and its prob something i am doing wrong, but i have no idea what im talking about. please help if you know.

this is my prob. i have a wireless internet router/modem. i also have a ps3. i cant figure out how to make the internet secure and also have the ps3 work. when my connection was mac enabled i got the ps3 a dmz (i would rather enable ports) exemption. but my p2p (torrent) programs wouldnt work and i couldnt log in or chat on the ps3 (upnp?). i goofed into fooling the ps3 that it was a nat2 and not nat3, but the chat still didnt work. i could log in but the chat didnt work.

i finally gave up and unsecured everything. SAME problem. now i am totally frustrated. i cant find on the router settings where to enable upnp for the ps3. chat doesnt work and i had to turn off the router firewall to get the torrent crap to work.

if you really do know about this, please help. my email is specie01 at __ gmail.com or just reply here. i can only check a couple hours out of the day.

thanks!

I don't understand everything you just said and some help would be provided if you told us what kind/brand of router you have. A model number would be even more helpful.

Also, are you trying to run bit torrent on your PS3? I haven't attempted that so I don't know if that can be done at all. It sounds like you are listing issues with both the PS3 and your PC.

That all said, it sounds like you are using a Linksys router. Linksys and the PS3 refuse to play nice and neither Sony nor Cisco/Linksys will admit there is a compatibility issue. They just blame each other.

If it is a Linksys router I will tell you how I have my setup. First, I don't have any security setup to prevent people from using my wiFi because my house is not close enough to anyone. I check my logs just in case and the only things accessing my router are my PC, my Wii, and my PS3.

Now, to make the Linksys router work well with the PS3 you must disable UPnP on the router. Where this is located differs from models and versions. I have a WRT54G v.6. On mine it is under the main Administration menu at the bottom. I don't know why that works, but it does. Something about UPnP makes it want to keep resetting the router, just messing up the whole network.

Now, if you want voice chat to work solidly you must set the PS3 up as a DMZ. This will require that you know your router's IP, Subnet and DNS addresses as well. On my router DMZ settings are a sub menu under Applications and Gaming. Then when you set up the PS3 you must manually assign an IP address that is exactly the same as your DMZ address you assigned on the router. Use any IP you want except 1 or 100 because 1 is the router and 100 is commonly your PC.

Now, if you do not know where to get your Subnet and DNS addresses; on your PC (assuming you are using XP) go to Start, click on Run and type cmd. This will open a command prompt (looks like DOS, if you ever used that). In the command prompt type: ipconfig /all This will make it read your system and give you your PC's IP, Subnet, and three DNS addresses. The PS3 will only require two DNS addresses.

That is all I can tell you. Security settings vary from person to person based on how you have it set up.

I hope this helps. I don't mess with NAT or enabling ports. I do know that at one point I saw something saying that without DMZ voice may or may not work on the PS3. I have seen some suggestions on the Web about NAT and enabling ports, but everything I have seen still all comes back to disabling UPnP on a Linksys router to make it work consistently.

One other thing: If you are freaking out about your Connection Test failing to log on to the Playstation Network, that happens about half the time for me, but the Internet still works and my PS3 still logs on normally. If my connection speed is down for whatever reason it times out because the test only gives it about ten seconds to connect.

thank you

ok i actually prob did leave some info out. it is a motorola surfboard. bgs590 or something.

i cannot find the upnp on the router. is it possible it doesnt have one?

the ps3 was set to a dmz exemption, but the chat didnt work. (i could hear i just cant talk) this was when it was mac address enabled. i couldnt figure it out so i just x'ed all the security just to make it work and it still does the same thing.

i had to disable the router firewall for the torrent program to work on my computer. i dont use it on the ps3. i even opened the ports on the firewalls for the ps3/torrent prog.

i read somewhere that i need a static ip address or the stuff wont work, but everytime i try and do that the router locks me out and i have to reset it. wtf?

i really appreciate the help, but i really dont know what im doing. i would pay someone, but no one seems to be willing/able to set it up or fix it.

Not having used the Motorola the best I can do is offer up this:

The guy there seemed to be having the same problem and they helped him out. It just sounds like the Motorola wireless gateway modems require a bit of trickery to get set up. My best guess is they have a lot more security built in since it acts as a modem and router.
