Hot Wheels’ Legends Tour Wants to Transform Your Ride into a Toy

For the wide majority of us, snapping up the Hot Wheels equivalent of our favorite ride is the closest we’ll ever get to actually owning it. However, the famed die cast brand is turning that routine on its head for its 50th anniversary, inviting enthusiasts to submit their own projects to inspire Mattel’s next pocket-sized models.

It’s called the Legends Tour, and Hot Wheels is holding 15 meetups at Walmarts around the United States between now and November to immortalize one real-life custom car in honor of the brand’s milestone. A nominee will be chosen at each event, culminating in a final round at SEMA 2018 in Las Vegas where a winner among the 15 will be decided.

The competitions are open to visitors as well as entrants, and two of them have already happened — one in Los Angeles on April 28 (where Jay Leno was on hand, of all people), and another in Kansas City, MO on May 5. The next is scheduled for May 19 in Teterboro, NJ, but Southern Californians shouldn’t fret if they missed the festivities the first time around. The Legends Tour returns to the Golden State on October 30, ending in Pico Rivera.

GTPlanet readers in particular may be excited to learn that the Xbox One X special edition of the Ford F-150 Raptor that arrived in Forza Motorsport 7 in February will also accompany the tour. The Forza team made the announcement on Twitter on April 28. In addition to its Project Scorpio-inspired livery, this custom Raptor measures a whopping 93 inches tall, thanks in part to its 38-inch BF Goodrich Krawler T/A tires.

Entrants will be judged on five criteria: design, authenticity, garage spirit, performance & fun, and the story behind the build. More information on the Legends Tour can be found on Hot Wheels’ website, along with directions for those participating and a full list or rules.
