More Leaked Details on the Logitech G29 Driving Force Wheel

flereinformationerlogitechs_1461534_650x

As you may have heard, news of Logitech’s return to the sim racing hardware market recently hit the web, with pictures of what appeared to be the G29 Driving Force. Now, more details and a new photo of the wheel’s packaging have leaked, via a report recently published by GameReactor.

According to their “sources close to Logitech”, the wheel will only be compatible with the PS3 and PS4. That leaves out the PC, which was famously well supported by the wheel’s predecessors, the G25 and G27.

It will reportedly be sold for €180 (that’s roughly $212 USD at current exchange rates), including a pedal set which closely resembles those shipped with the G25/G27. A shifter will be available as a separate add-on.

GameReactor’s source cites a full reveal of the wheel later this month, which would be expected, considering E3 – the gaming industry’s largest show – kicks off on June 16th.

Great news, price is very good knowing how good G27 is.. hope it will work with PC.. but I still will be happy with GT7..

    1. Johnnypenso

Not really. The description of the wheel is identical to the G27 and the wheelbase looks like the G27, so potentially it’s just a G27 with a different (uglier) wheel attached and no shifter, but costs more money. Throw in the optional shifter and it’s at least 50% more than the price of a G27, at least in Canada, for basically the same wheel.

“G29 Driving Force is the definitive sim racing hardware for the latest PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PC titles. Feature dual-motor force feedback and helical gearing for quiet, smooth steering. Stainless steel paddle shifters and RPM/Shift indicator LEDs help you make crisp, fluid gear transitions without taking your eyes off the track. The separate pedal unit gives you natural, responsive control with a nonlinear brake pedal. Driving Force is built for comfort and durability with hand-stitched leather and stainless steel components. Built-in clamps and bolt points allow the wheel to be mounted securely to a table or racing rig, minimising shifting or wobbling during aggressive manoeuvres.”

As predicted, looks like a G27 with a new wheel.

    1. Tenacious D

Err… and you can tell it looks rubbish, how? To me, it looks similar to the wheel set for the G25/27, which is quite solid. As long as it’s made as well as the DFGT, it should be more than fine.

    2. Johnnypenso

Do you even read what people write? He didn’t say, “it’s rubbish”, he said it’s “rubbish compared to the T500”, which it is. The T500 pedals are quite superior to these. Doesn’t mean they aren’t decent pedals but that’s not what he was saying.

    3. Leggacy

Maybe rubbish is a bit strong. I found the old G25/27 pedals to be adequate but the break pedals always felt too spongy. They also seem to be made mostly of plastic where as the T500’s are mainly metal, damn heavy and extremely well made (perhaps over engineered). I’m not really a fan of organ pedal accelerators either, much prefer inverted, not sure if the G29 is capable of inverted mount.

    4. Johnnypenso

They are mostly plastic, only the pedals faces, springs and minor components are metal.
The brake pedal is spongy but I upgraded with the GTEYE brake spring and swapped the old brake into the clutch and it made a big difference. The pedal effort is very heavy now and quite progressive, making no ABS driving more intuitive and realistic feeling. Still they are no match for a set of T500 pedals.

    5. gigio79

In case somebody did forget, the price of G27 was 250 eur, T500 costs 450 Eur. I can tell you that my G27 pedal set after three years of daily use was still perfect. Of course if a steering wheel costs the double of another one the quality must be better.

    6. Johnnypenso

You can find T300’s in Europe on sale for $250Euro or less. And the G27 has been hovering around $145Euro here in Canada for a couple of years at least. T300 is around $300Euro in Canada.

  3. BMfan

When i saw the 1st news about this wheel i thought “awesome, now i can have a wheel for driveclub on PS4 and Project Cars on PC”

I so hope that the insider is wrong or that a modding community can fix Logitechs mistake.

  4. Not_A_Guest

What load of crap… I would jump on a $210 wheel if it was compatible with PC…
I personally think Logitech is shooting themselves in the foot here. I own a DFGT and I was looking for an upgrade, but I don’t know if the price of the G27 will go down much.

  5. David Brooks

It might be too much to hope for but if the G27 shifter is compatible with this it suddenly becomes the most economic option for me to get a wheel for the PS4.

  6. YukinoSuzuka

Yes, I think the number G29 isn’t the right name for this wheel. It assuming it’s the follow up for the G27 steering wheel. But it’s more the follow-up for the DFGT, just like the price is a bit lower than the G27 was at his launch date.

I think this would be a great wheel. Sure, it isn’t pretty as the DFGT or G27, but I like the button lay-out of the DFGT and they copied this very well on the g29. Now there are better paddles behind the wheel and a decent pedal box !

The only concern I have, is the materials they’ve used? The latest DFGT’s are from cheaper materials than the DFGT’s in the early days. That would be a huge deal-breaker for most of us.

    1. Tenacious D

DFGTs are well made wheels. I have a DFGT from 2010 and a G25, and the feel is remarkably similar. And the DF is still going strong.

Definitely getting the G29, at least when the early teething issues are resolved. The Thrustmasters and Fanatecs are still reporting problems, while issues with Logitechs are uncommon.

    2. Johnnypenso

The G27 has a well known issue with the optical encoder which was reported dozens of times on GTP. I had this issue and had to have the wheel replaced after 6 months, BrandonW77 had the same issue, IIRC jimantonic had 2 replaced in 3 years etc. It is a very common problem and a quick internet search will reveal just about every sim racing forum in existance has threads dedicated to this and Youtube is loaded with instructional videos to fix it. If you have this issue it causes the wheel to go progressively off centre while using it to the point where you are driving straight and the wheel is at 90 degrees after just a few laps.

    3. research

I’d be careful with the phrase “well known” when it comes to that reported issue, JP. I’ve had my finger on the pulse of the sim-wheel game for a few years now, and can’t acutely recall ever hearing of it.

Maybe it’s because I have a G25? Most of my study includes the G27 though, and I would often search “G27” to find out about issues and modifications for the 25.

What I know for sure, is that my G25 has been going strong for 5 years of hard use now with no signs of letting up. And now that I have a pc and Assetto Corsa I finally know what force feedback is! Lol

  7. Tunerguy21

What’s with all these new wheels having separate “add-ons”. Sure, it lowers the price if the base wheel but then they make it up (and then some) when you buy the rest of the set. Its just a money grab. Also, a three-pedal set included but no shifter? Really?

  8. MLRSparco

Was hoping the G29 would be compatible with the Xbox One aswell or at least PC but I guess not,I already own a G27 so I guess I’ll just get the Fanatec Porsche 911 wheel which is compatible with the G27 pedals and shifter, smh what a shame.

  9. sporkafife

Definitely not going to get it if it’s PS4 only… not that there’s anything new about companies making platform dependant add-ons, I just really want a wheel as solid as the G25/27 with the ability to play cross platform between the PS4 and PC.

  10. sind3ntosca

I’ve already posted this on June 1st at the first news thread :p …yes, too bad PC unsupported :( but hackers everywhere… they will make it compatible with PC hahahhaaha :p

  11. amitlr

Looking at the size of its base, and price, this wont be a T300 competition to say the least.
Probably a facelift to the G27 to hang in there with the PS4 console, and fit right in the budget slot, for those with a smaller budget looking into Driveclub , need for speed etc (the majority of players). There is nothing between the T80 and T300, and this looks like a good in between to fill that gap.
I still don’t understand why PC is left out due to the current G27 popularity with PC players.
There is still a large demand for G27 (at least where i live) due to its compatibility, ease of use , and price range.
Maybe they will have something else up their sleeve at E3.
To me, this looks like a disappointment for a G27 successor considering the competition. and the G series pedigree.

  12. Max911

Sweet! This solves my wheel issue for when I get the PS4 and GT7.
Logitech has pretty bulletproof stuff as long as they are well-maintained once in a while, definitely getting this wheel when GT7 comes out.

    1. thegt500

“There is nothing between the T80 and T300”
Begging to differ, there is a Thrustmaster T100 FFB wheel between them http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-Force-Feedback-Racing-Wheel-x/dp/B00CCYYC42
It’s great to see Logitech making a comeback to the console market, not too sure of the design of the G29 though. It looks a bit ‘toyish’ to me when compared to the G27 and T300/T500 !
Hearing it’s only going to be PS3/4 compatible is a bit of a bummer for Xbone and PC users though, and also not good news for G25/27 owners hoping for PS4 compatibility as I don’t see Logitech releasing a patch to allow them to be used as it will impact sales of the G29 if they do !

  13. Coquico

Mmmm! It seems that it will be in the DFGT range, by the look it has. I am looking to go to the next level when I swicht to ps4. Very interesting price, but because of that, I don’t think it can be compared to t300. Anyway, these are great days for racing!

  14. habsfrenzy

Ya I’m bumming too, just bought a T300, had DFGT, and the T300 conked out last night, have to reinstall the software, which I need a PC and I’m on a mac, grrr.

  15. thunderjolt

Okay I’m really upset now that it’s going to be PS3/PS4 only… I was hoping to upgrade to this from my DFGT which I’ve been running for years now.

  16. Wider

Looks the holders will be the same as the DFGT ones, which is perfect. this’s gonna be a worthwile upgrade from DFGT!

  17. GT5 Level 41

So far I’ve only bought the DFGT. I used a little while until I just couldn’t put up with the crappy pedals anymore. To you guys with better wheels, the DFGT does not use a third clutch pedal, do you have to use the clutch to shift on the better wheels? Or do you just shift by moving the knob around regardless of clutch position? Also, does the gas and brake have any kind a real feel to them?

    1. CoolJetta3

You do have to clutch to shift on my G27 if I remember correctly. You can pull it out of gear without the clutch. The gas and brake have some type of spring tension to them, that’s about it

    2. Johnnypenso

The gas and brake on the G27 are stiffer than the DFGT and with a metal face. The GTEYE mod is a wothwhile upgrade for the brakes. Whether you can shift without the clutch depends on the game and your settings. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

  18. YZF

As I said in the previous post, G29 “Driving Force” will be targeted at consoles (same as with previous wheel) so there might be G29 for PC some time later (higher priced and more serious version)

    1. Johnnypenso

Best guess is that its just a G27 with a new wheel attached and if that’s the case, the T300 is the far superior wheel.

    1. swillisam

      I just bought a T300RS too!!!

€180 for a steering wheel with a clutch is good value. I’m looking forward to seeing a comparison to the T300RS if the G29 does exist.

    2. biffdiver

IMO, you’ll be MUCH happier & better off sticking with the T300. No g29 details yet, but my guess is it will be a considerable downgrade from the T300.

That being said, the biggest reason to avoid the G29 is………

Sales will be down because they are too late to the party. Logi will be dumbfounded to realize most of the serious PS4 racing community have (like you) already bought a T300 due to PCARS release (sales for T300 are through the roof leaving most retailers back-ordered for 1-2 months right now).

This fact, will cause a lack of sales, which they will blame the consumers (not their ineptitude), and then Logi will likely bow out the console market again. Because of lack of PC support now you’ll have a useless plastic turd.
