Nissan has taken the covers off the latest model of its flagship performance car, the GT-R Nismo, ahead of its market launch later this year.
The GT-R Nismo is the fastest and most powerful car in the GT-R stable, and has been since the model was introduced in 2013. It combines what’s already a very potent combination with some motorsport know-how to create a machine that’s sharper and more brutal in every way you can imagine.
That will continue with this latest version, which will be available in two different models. For the first time, both will come in a Nismo-exclusive “Stealth Gray” body color, rather than the white, red, silver, and black options previously offered.
If you’re familiar with the MY2020 GT-R Nismo, you’ll already know the recipe behind the MY2021 car. The same VR38DETT sits under the hood, delivering 591hp to all four wheels, courtesy of a pair of GT3-specification turbochargers attached to the 3.8-liter V6. Nissan also upgrades the con rods, crankshaft, crank pulley, piston rings, valve springs, and flywheel, all in the name of sharpening up engine performance. A single “takumi” craftsperson constructs each engine by hand.
The 2021 car retains the aerodynamic enhancements of the 2020 model too, including the louvered front wheel arches to reduce pressure, and therefore lift, in the wheel wells. There’s also the standard carbon-ceramic discs, which Nissan says are the largest ever fitted to any Japanese performance car at 410mm (16.1in) in the front and 390mm (15.4-in) at the rear, and six-piston aluminum monoblock front calipers and four-piston aluminum rear calipers, all manufacturerd by Brembo.
Along with the regular 2021 GT-R Nismo, Nissan will produce a special edition model which it hasn’t yet given a specific name. However this car, which will be made to order, differs from the standard model by way of a clear-coated carbon fiber hood, and exclusive 20-inch forged aluminum wheels from Rays. The lack of paint on the hood means the special edition is 100 grams (3.5oz) lighter than its stablemate.
Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist of the GT-R, commented:
“The GT-R NISMO has always been an ongoing pursuit of ultimate driving pleasure. We take a holistic approach, seeking precision performance through a meticulous balance of engine components and shaving weight, and incrementally evolving the GT-R’s appearance to deliver the ultimate balance of power, performance and excitement to our customers.”
Nissan is yet to reveal pricing for the cars, but we’d expect it to be almost identical to the current model at $211,000 (£175,000), with the special edition coming in at a slightly higher price. First deliveries are expected this October.
