We tried a career challenge with 20k budget as a casual thing over at GBRC. I picked up a Civic Type R (EP) 04 for 19,388cr. Don't recall mileage but had 213BHP, 1190kg, 413pp.

I'm one of the slower drivers at the club but easily beat the RX7s, Silvias and AE86s that were popular choices with drivers who normally run faster than me. Also ran close to a MR2 driven by our champion who is usually 3 secs a lap quicker than me, which leads me to think the Civic should do very well in your tests.

Not quite got to the Civic Type R's yet. got the 98 and the 2001 Type R's not seen the 04 yet. (But I will probably have already bought it, just not written the cost and advertised power figures at the time.)

413pp sounds good, and later Honda engines seem eager to produce great gobs of power, and the Civic platform seems to be pretty good.

I've twenty other cars to run before I reach my two Civic R Types. When I do run them I should have a good cluster of sporty FF cars to judge them against, Mazda 323F (Lantis) Yaris RS Turbo, Starlet Glanza, and the mighty Volvo 240GLT.

Subaru Impreza WRX 1994
TMC - 1m47.2 (9m17.9)
CROUT - 1m58.0 (5m56.5)
NURBURG - 8m37.3

The TMS race time is very large as I had my first testing crash. Lap 2 trying to make up time, into the final two corners (Double Jeopardy) and the car didn't want to turn in, understeer wide up the berm on the right, with a really nasty thunk, Spoilt Lap 2 and didn't help for the third lap. But the last lap was much better and repreentative of what the car can do I feel.

The car? 5 gears, but 5th is more like a 5.5 gear, when you upchange from 4th at 100 the revs DIE and you are chugging along at 5400 revs... usually the next gear starts at 6000 revs, so for me the sound and grunt differential is a bit of a jarring moment. That said 5th will take you to top speed at Nurburgring without clattering into the rev limiter, but it does reach the red line. On softer tyres that maynot be the case. Car red lines at 7500. Engine note is noisy, but not great.

Handling. Have to mention this as the car should have been a write off at Trial Mountain. It understeers alot, It is fast but it sort of doesn't really want to turn, If you get a bit eager on turn in the tyres will put up a fight, then you will slide. However it is a controllable slide/ drift. In FR or MR cars this sort of hooligan driving would be very hard work to revcover from , but a 4WD car seems to have nice balance, Maybe the Impreza has a ncie weight balance towards the front so it dones't really want to swap ends.

Initially I didn't like the car, but after a lap of Nurburgring I was quite happy to accept the foibles of the car.

Another note, I put Orange wheels on the car, but used Monaco Orange - This is some Retina melting shade of Orange, as a chip it looks fairly subtle, but on the car it was so bright it was a distraction watching the replay.

This car had 46,000 miles on it, so that may be a factor in the awkward level of Understeer.

Next car - The Volvo. (Cue minor chords on a Chello with a Fade to black...)

(SLightly late edit)

I have been noting down the real power compared to what the UCD tells you.

This WRX Impreza said it had 246bhp and 31.5 torques
But when I looked at the car in my garage - it said I had 249bhp - Yes 3 ponies crammed into that boxer engine. However there was a cost - the Torques had dropped to 29. The PP value is the same so (As I guess I said many posts ago, the PP value on a used car is the real value of the current car, The Advertised Power and Torque figures are what the Manufacturers think the car has... The Skylines are infamous - Notorious - whatever, for saying 276bhp, when the reality is, these GTR's have over 300.

On a head to head basis this 94 Impreza compares well to the 99 spec-R Silvia AERO -
The Silvia is down on Power and Torques, and 4pp less than the Impreza, but posts faster times at all three tested tracks - probably down to the Impreza losing much of the potential speed via the understeer that I find a real trial to drive around.
I wonder which of these two car would be faster with a good suspension tune? How much can you shave from a lap time if you had a better set up (Only suspension and ramp angles.) Fun for another day.

Another odd couple is the Ballade CRX and the Pug 206 - the Honda has a very high PP score considering how under powered the engine is.

PP-/bhp/Tor/mass//TMC/CRO/NUR/Cost (name)
362/108/13/0815//14.2/7.3/23.2/12.7 (Ballade CRX)
361/130/17/1080//12.5/3.7/19.9/19.2 (Pug 206 S16)

The Ballade CRX is a nice car, and cheap but its PP value seems very high compared to the Peugeot 206.

(TMC lap -100 seconds so 14.2 = a lap time of 1m54.2)
(CROuter lap -120 seconds, so 7.3 = equals a lap time of 2m07.3)
(Nurburgring lap - 540 seconds (9 minutes) - so how much under or over a 9 minute lap. 19.9 = 9m19.9 ; -22.7 = 8m37.3)
(Cost in Thousands - 12.7 = 12700cr)

No testing today - bougt a few more cars... a MR2 Spyder (6MT)
Got three of these 3rd generation MR2's two that are slightly used and one that is heavily used. and this 6MT one which has been moderatly used... The price and PP differences are modest, but it will be my first time to test how much of a bargain you get with a car that has "been around the block" a bit.

Also got a 240SX (S14) this cost exactly 20,000 credits and could well be my choice as the bench mark for these tests, every car scaled to how well it performs to this one car.

Also picked up a real clunker of a car a Toyota Carina... And a well worn SRT4 - again will be interesting to test out how much power lost and credits saved, and if I can feel any chassis issues.

Volvo GLT Estate.

...

Certainly a car that is, different to drive. I'm not exactly sure as to what I was expecting from this piece of Swedish steel.

PP-/bhp/Tor/mass//TMC/CRO/NUR/Cost (name)
307/119/18/1890//22.9/19.6/87.0/11.2 (Volvo GLT)

TMC = 2m02.9
Cape Ring Outer = 2m19.6
Nurburgring = 10m27.0
Cost 11,200 credits

This car was so slow, you could see lichen growing on the dashboard each lap. The Car only uses 6000 revs and the heavy weight and ponderous engine means you will been watching the rev needle go all Aston Martin on you - In the wrong way - Counter clockwise Tacho means you are slowing down, and this big truck does alot of that.

Trial Mountain Circuit
Only needed two gears, 3rd and 4th. You only need 2nd at sspeeds below 50mph and 5th gear... if you get into that then you must have been dropped out of the back of a Hercules transport plane without a parachute. The heavy weight means plently of mass over the wheels; so grip is quite good.

Tyres? I had to upgrade them to Comfort Softs... this car comes equiped with Comfort Mediums. It didn't understeer as much as I thought it would, but its woeful lack of speed is the main issue. SO much of TMC was flat out. Only 5 points I needed to slow down... or downchange as the car was already slowing down.

Cape Ring Outer
OUCH - The forst corner was interesting, but as the apporach was slow it was easier to get the right speed and line through the corner... it was then flat out foot to the floor stuff for about a Minute till I reached the "Toranaga" corner... (Crest left tight right)
Then the ever intersting Nurikabe Esses.

Cape Ring South Track Guide

(Yeah I've not done a track guide for Cape Ring Outer yet.)

Nurburgring.
This wasn't so bad, but was painfully slow, the car was planted and solid, but it just chugged along... The uphill sections were hard work... 10 minutes 27 seconds...

Even Sabine Schmitz can beat that in a Van... and have time to order a Happy Meal for Richard Hammond at the drive thru Burger Shot.

Next up is a 1600 NR-A MX5 from 2004. It comes with 3 less horsepower... but I expect this Baby Viper RT10 to set a much faster entertaining lap time.

Not often I look forward to driving a MX5 - but now I am really looking forwrd to it.

Keep in mind that the weight of the 240 is very wrong. I think it's weights about 14xx kgs not sure though.

I'd hate to drive this car when you have stuff in the back of it...

Worth a bit of research to find out what this car should weigh... I'll look for the Mitusbishi Legnum while I am at it... as that seems very reasonable at 1550 and a big meaty engine and a four wheel drive system.

What makes the Volvo so heavy - Swedish Meatballs?

Well Wikipedia says - Curb weight, 1986–1991 Wagon 3132 lb (1421 kg)

(Legnum....Curb weight — 1,520 kg (3,400 lb))

So - maybe a for the sake or realism weight reduction on the old Swedish meatball then... how low I can get when I use some Added Lightness with the Weight Reduction thing...

Good catch Tron

Nearly got to that one.

I made a quick list of the fastest 20 cars at TMC...
I had been running the tests, but no real list, just the odd "Oh that car is faster than that one" But now her is the first list...

The format is wonky as I'm not too sure how to get a table here neat.

The TMC score is just the time over 1m40 to complete a lap of Trial Mountain (With CS tyres and No driver aids, BB set to 3/2)

##-TMC-pp-bhp-tor-mass-cost- name

## - position
pp - performance Points
bhp = Power
Tor - Torques in Europeanese
Mass - In Kilograms
Cost - in hundreds of credits
Name - Car name...

If you can see anytihng in that table it is probably the lack of surprises, In general , Higher PP scores sit at the top of the table, Lower PP are at the bottom. A few cars are not in PP order - BUT the filter is My TMC lap times, I had 5 flying laps, but If I had a really good lap, I maybe a second faster. Say I had a string of bad laps, my best lap could be 2 seconds slower than what the car could do with me at the wheel.

---

I did a Colin Chapman on the Volvo - the Full WR3 with 35,000 credits worth of added lightness.

This turned the Volvo into the Super leggera (sic) -1890kg->1707kg->1549kg->1436kg

I did the TMC test, and it felt better, but the best lap was... 2m00.1 - a cool 2.7 seconds faster, but still miles off 19th place...

--

Next cars?
Airtrek Turbo R (A Fat Lancer SUV)
MR2 Spyder
MX5 1.8RS
Yaris RS Turbo
323F
Altezza RS200

The Celica ST183 - Several tests away - 362PP

I recently bought the 2800XX Celica. - 371pp
wonder which is faster? the Old FR or the more modern FF...

Can the Toyota MR2 G-Limited '97 be purcheased for less than 20k ? If so could you try it ?

Not seen that (Toyota MR2 G-Limited '97) but I have bought a MR2 GTS 97 - which has 426pp, so it should be good. Mad Max put a list of All the cars you could run in this test of mine, I think it is on the first page... But alot of those are real hoopty cars, under 100bhp or 300PP and I tend to ignore them.

Mitsubishi AirTrek Turbo-R

At first glace I thought, chelsea tractor, this will be useless, (burp).

But under the portly fat suit is the heart of a Lancer Evolution. 2 litre Turbo charged grunt mated to a four wheel drive system.

Well I took it to the usual triple of test tracks. and it performed as well as I could have expected. It understeered and didn't really want to rotate in corners, However if you did go in too fast and get the car to lose traction it has the usual LanEvo trick of holding a dirty great smoking slide.

This car seemed to leave alot more black tyre marks than I've noticed of late.

Gearbox? 5 gears and 5th is so tall it could play in the NBA (Go Pistons!) 2nd gets you tp to 72mphh and 3rd will get you up to 105. This in itself was a bit of a faff as the transtiton from 2nd to 3rd seemed to be just the speed the car could take several corners. Not a major issue, but it probably added to my lap times as I wasn't too sure if I should keep flat beyond the red line and flirt with the rev limiter or upchange for a few hundred yards only to have to drop a cog in the next braking zone... all this rowing about on the gearbox unsettles a normal car.

Suspension felt pretty good in this, but understeer is what it does best.

AIRTREK Turbo-R
236bhp/35torques/1520kg 43575km/400pp/17950cr/Level2

but the car actually has 14bhp less
222bhp/32torques/27234miles

TMC - 1m50.2
CROUT - 2m00.8
Nurburg - 9m01.9

Problem places? It had nice grip, yet understeered, Sort of planted but not wanting to turn in for corners. Braking was pretty good. ENgine was powerful enough to pull it up the hills but the gearbox felt very tall indeed, perhaps when the engine was new it would be better, but 3 eurotorques down and 14 brake ponies out of the stable too.

On the TMC 100 scale it places in 7th place, above the Galant VR4 and the Celica GTFour. Interestlingly it has the same sort of numbers as those cars, (398/401 vs 400 - all three 4wd)

Next...MR2 Spyder

Phew not interweb yesterday. Hope this works.

MR2 Spyder- Very good car, I was comparing it to the preceding Air Trek Porky Lancer SUV... and it scores many less PP and is 84bhp down and has two wheels that are not powered by the engine.

MR2 Spyder (1999)
138bhp/17torques/970kg/ 19.6credits and a PP of 377

The MR2 however was amazing to drive, it sort of just over rotates in corners, so you have to balance the car in turns, (Rather than living with a pudding of understeer)

MR2 Spyder (99)

TMC - 1m48.6 (9m08.5)
CROUT - 2m00.4 (6m05.5)
Nurby - 8m56.3

Car was nice for power up hills, sort of holds its own when confronted with an incline. 5 gears 2nd will get you to 55, 3rd will get to 78, 4th will get you all the way to 107 and top gear will red line at 132 but not hit the rev limiter until... not sure, I didn't manage it, but I guess about 140 the car will top out.

only 377pp but a TMC score of 8.6 puts it in 6th in the no mans land between the Impreza's and the 200SX (Silvia S14) - and the Silvia has 30 more PP's the Impreza has 52more!

Next up was the second generation MX5... the MX5 1.8RS from 1998
this one had 134bhp/15torques/1030kg and cost 16.7credits - PP of 362
(UCD said 142bhp and 6.6 torques)

After the nippy MR2, the Mazda felt heavy and slow. It has 6 gears, red lines at 6500revs but you'll spend most of a lap in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears 3rd gets you to 65 and 4th takes you to 85, 5th deals with things above that, 6th is more of a motorway cruising gear.

Not as much fun as the MR2 but still good, no understeer, powerful enough to keep going up hills, most of the time!

TMC - 1m52.0 (9m27.1)
CROUT - 2m04.8 (6m16.5)
NURBY - 9m19.6

So faster than the other MX5's -

Next... Yaris RS Turbo

Cheap I see .. 19.6 Crs for 38BHP! That's cheaper than a car wash! :dopey:

Sorry this silly wireless keyboard has a dodgy "1" key... every other key I can type normally but that single number I need to Hammer it home like it is on the bottom of the keyboard.

I'll recheck it now, as I can see one car has only 5 torques...

Yaris RS Turbo
147bhp/20torques/980kg/ 16093credits and a PP of 369

But of course once you get in the car all the magic of black paint on the tyres and a magic tree hanging from the rear view mirrors kicks in... Dramatic power loss. 18 horses gone...

129bhp/18torques/980kg/--- well it still costs the same, and the PP is still 369.

The Yaris Hilton is quite a good Front wheel drive car, understeer comes as standard, but it isn't the brain numbing nasty variety but that kills the enjoyment out of trashing it through corners. - I had just run an Elise 180 on the same tyres at Niatnuom Lairt which was a ton of fun. The Yaris was a big step down from that level of fun but not that bad.

Yaris RS Turbo

TMC - 1m50.1 (9m19.3)
CROUT - 2m03.4 (6m12.5)
Nurby - 9m10.8

This car compares well against a Toyota GT-Four RC - Or does the GTFour compare badly to most cars?

Next car The Mazda from At-Lantis - the 323F

Okay I've had my break for this testing thing. (Managed to win the 24 hours of Nurburgring with a Belgian Car ) Found my old paperwork list of cars too test and cars I've already tested.

Mazda Lantis next.

Then AlteezaRS200, Silvia Spec R Aero and then my first FTO (GPX 94).

I'll check the PP scores from previous... then I'll hit the track - Trial Mountain, Cape Ring OUTer and then the Ring.

Subscribed :)

Nice read (and write-up). I'm always looking for new ways to keep the game "fresh", so I think I'll give this a go myself.

Can I just ask, are you performing an oil change on the cars as you buy them? (I may have missed the part where you've mentioned this).

Checked the PP values since November - and all is good, - I seem to have had a smidge of luck by having a pause and not having to run these cars during the PP overhaul a while back.

Cars are driven as bought - If they have alot of miles then that is why some of them creep under 20,000. Of course an Oil change will get you most of the way back to full power - but then you have to factor in chassis rebuilds... and then a slight twea to a car could result in a huge gain in performance... LSD and Suspension or even a gearbox in some cars (American cas seem to run out of top speed alot.)

I'm also in a bit of a rush to complete the cars as the Seasonal events seem to be erroding away.
I quite like the 500pp Trial Mountain event as the cars are a nice test and force me to chase hard to get up to 8th place... and I have to run off line to pass so more chance to evaluate how good the car feels - The only down side is that most of these cars are Front Wheel drive... and It takes me a while to remember how to drive through the lashing of understeer I generate in them (By demanding too much form the front tyres too early during a turn.)

Mazda 323F (Lantis)
169bhp/18.3torques/1240kg/5864.3 miles 377PP cost 18,985cr and was a level 0 vehicle.

TMC - 1m52.0 (9m28.1)
CROUT - 2m02.0 (6m09.7)
Nurby - 9m05.7

Odd times, slower at TMC than my last drive (The Yaris RS Turbobobo) but the 323F was faster at Crout and Nurby.

I can understand the nurby time being much faster as I had been driving my little Yellow Belgian Bus there not long back. Cape Ring? Maybe I just got dialed in? Maybe the car has more speed but isn't so hot in longer slower corners (That TMC has)

The Steve 'Interesting' Davis fact was that after runing the three tests, the car had - 5900.0 miles on the clock.

How did the car feel? Slow front wheel drive! But the engine note was okay, tops out at 7200 rpm and the car judders at the start of a race as the cold tyres grumble at the torque injection your throttle foot give it. Gears, you get 5 and 5th is too tall for racing with, but better too tall and running lower revs than too short and clattering along on the limiter like somone who can't change gear.
2nd will get you to 60mph, 3rd to 87mph and 4th will deal with speeds under 110mph.

I quite like the car as an old boss of mine had one (silver) and she drove it like she had hired it... She was brutal behind the wheel. Better to be in the car with her, at least you know she won't crash into you then. (Don't you love it when women put on glasses to drive - just inspires you!)

Next up the Altezza RS200... I've painted the car already.

Painting the car -
I paint them all Seyfert Maziora - a sort of crazy Dark Green with an oily cast to it. And the wheels in Orange. An exception was one of the MX5's which won't let you change it from "Artvin Combonation 1" or something like that - still did the wheels. Orange wheels and a red car - Roma FC? Maybe Motherwell. Not a combonation of colours I am used to seeing.

This made it much easier to find where abouts I was up to in my garage -

Volkswagen Golf I GTI ’76?

I have not spotted that one in my UCD so far - But if it is under 20,000 then I'll be giving it a spin - then dropping it form the ceiling.

Not sure if you've tried the Starlet Glanza, but thats quite the potent ff machine. Lightweight and i think around 140~ish horsepower. Good circuit sleeper

Just buy a new one. You have to find a used car with 100,000 km before it's half value. If you pick the Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA Special Package) ’89 or Mazda Eunos Roadster J-Limited (NA) ’91, they are versatile cars. You could go with the Honda CIVIC TYPE R (EK) ’97, but you'd only have 20 credits left.

Toyota Altezza RS200

193bhp/20torques/1340kg/6338.7 miles 387PP cost 15,662cr and was a level 1 vehicle.

TMC - 1m50.7 (9m21.1)
CROUT - 2m00.3 (6m04.1)
Nurby - 8m53.1

Also ran a 400pp at HSR - High Speed Ring

This was a ncie change of pace, not as easy a win, as not many corners to make time up in but was still able to get a win.

HSR 1m25.6 (4m23.3)

The Altezza - Front engine rear wheel drive. Great. The car has a bit of Understeer built in, so take a bit of work to get it to do things, Once you understand that you can drive with plenty of purpose in a car that tends to play it safe. If you do get out of your depth the car tends to let you get back as the car is - stable, lots of weight at the front and front tyres that are not under extra burden of powering the car.
I found myself chucking the car about a bit. The engine note is nice, revs up to 8000 has 6 gears, but I only ever got up to 140 or so which was just under the red line in 5th gear. Perhaps the gears are a bit too spaced apart, when you change up it does feel like you have had the power stolen away.

If you do get too hot and heavy into corners the outside wheels will both fold on you... and the car will slide wide in an even fashion and not try to swap ends on you.

Nurburgring.
Special note for here as I felt the time was faster than expected - I judged a few places I could go flat out rather than playing safe... Quiddelbacher Hohe through to Swesih cross was flat out - this must have saved a couple of seconds on its own... but I was probably more "maximum attack" than usual as the car just felt good.

Odd as I enjoy knucklehead cars which change their minds like a Woman in a shoe shop. Maybe after the Vertigo experience - I can drive anything here!

Overall a great car, that lets you muck about but doesn't punish you for it.

Next car.. The very sleek looking Silvia Spec R AERO S15.

Silvia Spec R AERO S15

239bhp/207orques/1240kg/6338.7 miles 430PP cost 19,650cr and was a level 3 vehicle.

TMC - 1m46.5 (8m57.8)
CROUT - 1m56.2 (5m51.1)
Nurby - 8m31.2

Well I ran this but when I started to input the numbers up I seem to have run this car before - probably different distances/cash.

So how did it drive.
When it set fast times but the car felt very vague on cold tyres and even when warm it seems to understeer alot more than I'd like. And it is such a fast car having to pussy foot about mid corner when the front won't turn in is a shame.

So a fast and stable car -
Red line is 7250 but the rev limiter is 7750 - 500 revs to play with if you don't want to upchange, the power does seem to be down low in the revs so I was dipping into the red much of the time.

Engine note - low and throaty - sort of like 1966 four pot Coventry Climax FPF Grand Prix engine.

Not sure about the handling - It was fast but was a bit awkward in turns, If the Altezza was an eager puppy this was like a long leggy Great Dane lolloping along in a clumsy but mile eating gallop.

I plotted a graph of TMC times and Nurby times to get a rough gauge of pace...
1m54 - 8m30
1m52 - 8m15
1m50 - 8 minutes
1m48 - 7m45
1m46 - 7m30

It isn't perfect - some cars are miles away, The Celica SS-II posted a 1m51.8 - but storm nurby in 7m58.4 - about 20 seconds faster than I would expected.

That in itself isn't such a bad thing as you can look at a car and say which track it favours just by looking at which side of the line o' best fit it lies.

The Yaris RS turbo did TMC in 1m50.1 - but did the ring in a slow 8m10.8 - Obviously a car that performs well at Trial Mountain (1.5 seconds up) but underperforms at the Ring (ten seconds down).
Odd both are FF Toyotas.

The other stand out car (Other than the Volvo which is way out its depth here) is the Lan Evo6 RS - which is on the Good at TMC side of the line.

Of course One good lap at TMC can give you false hope... and the Nurby laps are just one lap... One good lap or one bad lap? At least with the TMC times they tend to even out.

FTO GPX next.

vehicle.

TMC - 1m49.2 (9m15.6)
CROUT - 1m59.8 (6m03.1)
Nurby - 9m01.7

V6 engine has a pleaseing note to it, but the car feels low on power. It also has a bit of a lack lustre feel handling wise, just feels a bit vague at times. However once you get to understand the car it does seem to perform better -
then it sort of give up on you. Hard to describe It has real potential.

Oil 185->194bhp (391->397PP) - 250credits
Engine rebuild 185->204 (391->404PP) - 6,500credits
Chassis overhaul - 11,000 credits

Car never troubled the high revs of top (5th) gear. It may have a 6th gear but I never came close to needing one. 3rd will deal with speeds under 90mph 4th will do the bulk of the work at speeds above this.

Next few cars...
Familia Sedan (368)- Celica GT-R2000 (371)- Primera2.0 (361)and then a MR2 Spyder (368)

should be close.
