Clean Run Challenge #4 Ferrari 512BB at High Speed Ring
First Race in the 550pp Supercar Nostalgia Challenge

Specs: 1976 Ferrari 512BB on Comfort Soft Tires.
Added parts:Sports Intake Manifold, Sports Air Filter, Sports Exhaust
Manifold, Sports Catalytic Converter
ONLY
A new premium 76 came to 391 hp 1400 kg 496pp w/ initial oil change. This will go up of course. Feel free to break in your car.

Now it's time to let loose with some high speed drafting excitement. Comfort Softs will make those banked turns a little tougher to manage. This will likely be a race for 3rd or 4th unless you find a shortcut or have alien powers. I didn't want to make permanent mods a requirement and to stay within some likely period mods. The aftermarket mufflers took away from the nice stock sound as well.

Save your credits as the next Nostalgia Supercar Clean Run Challenge will use the 1967 Lamborghini Miura. Or borrow mine if you don't have one.

THE GOAL:
Your fastest Total Race Time. The Race Events are basically Time Trials with moving obstacles (AI). Most are only 5 laps so think of it as a longer Time Trial but with other cars on track. Most races will only last 7-10 minutes. Winning the race is not the end goal-it's the Total Race Time like the latest GT5 Seasonal Overtake Challenges.

THE RULES:

1. No Driving Aids. Since SRF is forced on, there's more than enough car control available. No TCS, ABS, ASM, Active Steering. Driving Line and Transmission Choice are optional. For inexperienced ABS OFF drivers check out this great guide:https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showth...uide+TO+no+abs

2. Tuning Prohibited. No added parts, ballast, weight or engine stages. We may add power if a car is too slow for a decent run but that will be very specific. Brake Balance is all that can be adjusted.

3. Tires. Once more because of SRF we'll be using 1 grade lower than the AI this time.

4. Track Rules: Only fully clean runs. 2 wheels on track at all times. Rumble Strips are part of the track. The white line is the boundary otherwise. No wall contact. No initiated AI contact. This is what will make this a REAL challenge! Avoiding other cars may be the hardest aspect. Approach the driving like it's a real life track day and you have no Auto Insurance!

Note: To be clear on what constitutes a "clean" pass, we will use this rule from the GTP OLR:

You must establish substantial overlap with the car ahead before they reach the corner’s turn-in point to have the right to drive up their inside, or to expect them to leave inside room for you. At least the front of your car should be up to the driver’s position in the ahead car. The ahead driver has the right to be fully committed to the racing line of their choice without any interference if there was no substantial overlap before he turned in.

So if you've made a clean pass according to this rule and the AI initiates contact, that is acceptable.
In some instances a pass may be accomplished by going inside the AI if they've left sufficient room. As long as you don't initiate contact, it's clean. Just use your best judgement, this is supposed to be fun!

5. 10 Maximum Clean Runs. Restarts or dirty Runs do not count toward the total. Winning the race is not necessary for a submission.

Guess I'll go first. Finesse is required for the high banks something I sure am struggling with. Plenty of tire smoke and wheel tugging with a dash of AI cursing thrown in makes for a fun race. Some of the folks who say SRF gives ungodly amounts of grip should try this challenge.

Used a B/B of 3/1. Probably could go higher but I forgot to change it.
First clean run- 6:18.500 Next 6:17.363.

Great time NCR:tup:
I'm currently pulling 6.24s but I have 5 more clean runs left and I've worked out where I am losing time - the wide bends are counter-intuitive I've found more speed staying wide - I just haven't been able to get a clean run in since.

Great challenge NCRthree!👍

I have made four attempts at the High Speed Ring, and my best time was a 6.20.602

My finishing position was fourth, only about 1 second behind the third place car. I think I can catch the third place car (a Lambo Countach LP400), so more attempts will be undertaken.:sly:

Enjoy the tire smoke!

Catched the draft of 2nd place Miura at the end of lap 4 , passed it in the esses (sector 2) and passed the first place Miura in the last corner.

No 2nd gear used , 3rd works better thru sector 2 .
Shifting up at the rev limiter , a moment before it bounces back.

# of restarts : too many

Replay saved , as usual.

Found some more time today. 6:14.988.

My pedals bit the dust today so that's it for me. Not sure when I'll get a new set up so the Challenges will have to go on break unless someone else wants to put some up. I'm glad you guys had fun. Hope to be back soon.

A few more runs, and I've been able to reach 3rd place!:)

My time is now down to 6.18.262!

I've got nothing for those front-running Miura's, but I've smoked my way onto the podium in third!

Great fun!

Good news! A GTP friend has donated to me his old DFGT. A new Challenge will be posted soon.

These oldies are fun to drive with great cockpit views. I'm thinking of Laguna with a Cobra. I haven't attempted any other combos but I want to include the Miura-either DRC or GV or both.

Finally got through the seasonals and gave this a shot this weekend.
Best time was 6:08.836

That is good news! I may have been able to do a fortnightly series.....

Great challenge this one!👍
6.21.564 - there's more in there for sure but my DS3 is nearly on fire...and the front windows nearly smashed in frustration!!!! I just cannot maintain the 512's slide consistently enough - some laps I slide round turn 2 at 100mph, others at 80mph. Great circuit, great car:tup:

I gave this one a try, my first clean run came out at 6:07.947, which was 0.468 behind the leader. Took about around ten to a dozen goes and a 15 minute cool off break before hand; as I wanted to reach in through the window and rip the AI's eyes out of their sockets as clearer they never use them. Perhaps a breathaylzer before hand is in order too, because I've never seen anyone sober swerve about so much before, during, and after a corner, as well as the straights.

Also re-imburses my hate towards PD over their tactics/setup with the seasonals (I don't know why I put myself through it). Sort it out already PD.

Edit: Forgot to include the power and brake setup (400hp, ABS 1). The AI's pattern has not been consistent for me, there's always a difference in the gaps between 7th and 3rd place each run, despite never returning to the home screen. I'll be giving it a try without ABS next time, but I don't hold much hope.

I think i know the answer, but i wanted to ask anyway, does flashing the lights, waving the windscreen wipers, and beeping the horn make the AI move out of the way?

PS
Nice work NCRthree, i haven't tried any cleanruns yet, but this peaks my interest!!!!

Can I get any extra bonus or style points for time spent drifting side-ways thru the turns?

I have lowered my best time to a smoking 6:15.699!:)

I have used up my 10 attempts, so I'm going to have to settle with the above as my best time.

My lap times were as follows:

Lap # 1, 1:17.148
Lap # 2, 1:14.626
Lap # 3, 1:13.992
Lap # 4, 1:14.173
Lap # 5, 1:15.760

Lap five could have been better, but the other laps were quite decent.:)

On to the next race!

Erm two goes at this. Bit of a faff to get the bits. and the SRF really grumped me.

Had a major mistake on my first go... wheel on the outside curb on the turn infor turn 1.

just got the car to turn away from armco steel eating fun, but had a monster tankslapper sideways speed sapper that ruined the lap. - still atleast the comedy skid marks were amusing on the next lap.

had a Noahs ark grid - two Miura's Tow Countaches, Two 512's three Interceptors and a pair of American mobile chicanes (Nice work Corvette - nice gearbox you have there.)

As you can see by the times I am not a HSR specialist - The only corner I know I have nailed is that Right hander after the tunnel. Every other corner I bleed lap time.

Not helped much with my AI crew who made it harder as they seemed to be 2 wide where I had to pass them - (The two Ferrari's are haveing a real ding dong bashing itno each other like Mark Webber and Sebby Vettel had used hire cars to get to a Red Bull meeting.)

Much more time to find - Actually those two 512's had a better engine note than mine...

SRF - this does make the car slide very easily - the above posts make the car sound nasty, Mine would get sideways pretty readily but sort of gather itself up in a "Need for speed" fashion after very minimal input from the driver. Though I am sure a fast time here means you get maxiumum traction are you are not leaving smoke trails in every corner.

BB 3/2 - no aids other than the enforced SRF (boo!)

It's weird, I didn't notice any particular SRF effects. I'm sure I would if I'd tried it in practice mode-with and without. The 512 could loose grip pretty easily if pushed too hard.

The main time I've really felt a big difference is threshold braking. With no ABS it lessens any lockup possibilities and provides more stability. If you get out of shape you loose so much time it's a moot point-restart...again.

All these challenges have been pretty tough once you start really trying to better your times. The AI seems to be in the wrong place a LOT. This one tried my patience.

My new used wheel got here tonight so I'll post a new challenge by tomorrow. Would like to use some more vintage cars so get the OCD cars if you can. 2000GT and 240Z for sure. Those Renault Trophy cars are fun too. Our group ran a race with those on Kart Space, heh.

I've never really enjoyed the 512 in GT5 -

SRF - I'm not really sure - It could just be the Ferrari. I'd like it when I muck up a corner the car didn't help me out - I love (Every other car!) where I need to put every ounce of opposite lock to prevent a slide turning into a spin.

If I got the lines right into the corner - then the car would't be sliding about so the SRF wouldn't trigger.

Bottom line is I really need to get better at driving this Fezza.

Anyone got any tips for HSR?

Turn one I hang out way wide, then as a near the billboards on the right, I try to softly turn in stronger. All flat - on the exit I've noticed 156mph, car is 160 or so as I turn away from the right side of the track.

Turn 2... tighter Left banked
Where to brake - when to get on the power again. The camber of the track seems to send my 512 into a slewing yawing slide. I try to get on the power smotoh and soft to drift wide to the right... but I've yet to feel I've fluked a good line here.

over the very flat bridge
Turn 3 Right Flat Long
Turn4 Left Flat Long

linked esses, the deal must be to make the final left exit as soft and fast as you can.. so a slow initial right hold the right side of the track as you go under the bridge/advert.....
then a lazy late spiral in for a late apex, fast exit from the left into the Tunnel?

The right of Turn 5 is hard - But I think I have it sorted.

Turn 6 - big banked 180° left. I tend to go in drift out wide then power through never quite get close to the inside curb, and on the exit never really feel like I was ever going to drift too wide and hit the armco... So I obviously dolly through here.

Any proper tips drivers?

^^^ Through having HSR come up in shuffle lobbies a lot recently, I found that sticking as high up the banked turns as possible is the fastest method (without testing against a ghost though).

Doing so allows you to carry a lot more speed out of the corners and on to the long straights. In this challenge, I was coming out of Turn 2 at about 110mph, and the final turn at about 119-120mph. Try and keep a couple of feet away from the barrier, if the car starts to climb up the banking, stay flatout, that little curb just before the barrier will help the car to turn in further, preventing you from colliding with the barrier and maintaining all that speed.

Had three more runs here - dropping much time, Still along way off a win. I noticed one good lap I reached the first split at 30 seconds... but then every lap after that I was half a second down... and grumpy as I crossed the bridge I would make a mess of the Esses (Turns T4L T5R) as I was not really dialed into driving the car.

Final corner - the corner does seem to help you out here...

Going deep into the red may have gained time - staying in a higher gear also may have helped,

Getting better - but going to be harder for me to shave more time. (Will edit in the times when I bring the notes to a functional Ihara-Grubb data-term.

Sounds like you're getting the hang of it Ryk. I was waiting for one of the fast guys to comment first as I could use some tips too. But taking a high line up on the banking helps a lot. My worst turns are the esses for sure. I'd lose a second every lap through there. Turn 2 is the fun turn unless a bot is parked there.

Had three more goes - And got alot faster - but it seems to be you run the ragged edge and let SRF really work for you bang it into a corner and then get a really silly angle let the SRF give you magic extra grip (So you can turn and slow down - laws of physics I laugh in your face!)

Trusting a high line and in general being a bit more Commando seemed to reward me much more than punish me. A sort of early turn in brake with lots of tyre smoke to get the turning going and scrub the speed - then put down the power to really sling shot out of the corner...

First corner is trying to go in as soft as possible. Too much lock will scrub speed away - a steady turn in to build up the load - and - as has been said the exit camber does tend to keep you out of the armco even if mid corner you may be having doubts the car will stick.

Turn 2 - I had two methods here.
a bonkers chuck it at the apex line, lots of tyre smoke - but often the car would sort of stall when powering through the corner - not feeling like I had the most speed.

The other way was a more traditional straight line slow her down... then ease off the brakes and give a bit turn in, to get a later apex...

Why 2? Tended to have traffic.

Esses - Never seem to get the same line twice!

Final corner - I tend to pile in like a mad man let the car drift up wide - almost along that shadow line up high to under the Marshall tower... But by that tower I tend to be full throttle just coaxing the steering to maintain the turn but not to loose time - the Camber does seem to gift more grip than you may think.

This was going so well but then the two Countaches were really having a "Touring car fight" and I go wrong footed by them - had a huge Tokyo drift style slide - lost every ounce of forward momentum. It was an Armco impact (After the Lambo side swiped me - but al I gained was 5 seconds on the lap!)

Much more speed... the 13 lap was perfect drafts and painless passing. Lap 5? I was ahea dof the Countaches... in clean air... and no targets ahead to focus on... so obviously with zero pressure I drove like a numpty!

1m13.659 - 6m16.312 -

My best lap was much more down to helpful AI than to anything special on my part.
