My graphics card for my original 60GB couldn't have chosen a better time to start dying. I'm either swapping my 60 with Sony for a 120GB Slim, or just trading Gamestop my dying 60gb :lol:

exchanged for 120gb Slim ($150 difference). The game should run as smooth as silk with that size of install. Will also give me alot more time to read through the Apex CE book.

Is this officiall? 10GB doesn't seem like that much space... I mean I guess if you have an old 40 or even 60 but anything over 80 and I would imagine you can pretty easily free up 10GB.

Interesing though it ONLY takes up 10GB... wonder what all doesn't get installed since a full BD (as GT5 is apparently going to be) is at least 25GB...

It's not "official" since it's not finalized, but Kaz said it "should be enough" for an install.

Keep in mind, that GT5 is probably a dual layer BD. If you think about it, it makes more sense. God of War 3 was 30gigs. MGS4 was all 50gigs. From what I recall I heard GT5 is at around 40gigs... I may be wrong.

It reduces loading times, and you will still need the disc to play. Should also convert the standard models to premiums when installed on HDD. Kidding on the last :lol:

. The only con would be taking time to install, and using memory from your harddrive.

Thankfully I have already upgraded my 40GB HDD to 320GB because I had a feeling GT5 would require plenty of space.

Speaking of upgrading your HDD I have a question thats puzzled me for months. When I replaced my HDD all I had to do was format my HDD and that was it. I didn't have to install the firmware and all my user accounts, PSN remained on the PS3 because I assume these were saved into the memory rather than my previous HDD. However some people when replacing their HDD have had to install the firmware by downloading it from the website and then save this onto a flash drive and put this into their PS3. So why do some have to do this and others don't? Does it depend on the current firmware in your PS3.

Well by official I was thinking did it come from PD or was it just speculation... sounds like it's pretty much from the horses mouth though.

I know size was originally said to be quite large but I find it hard to tell these days what with sticking huge high def video all over the place and uncompressed 7 channel audio. I mean there are a lot of games bigger than GTPSP that you wouldn't think would be by comparison.

Pros: Reduces load times.

Cons: Takes up space on HD - Takes time to install (10GB fom BD will probably take quite a while).

You still need the disc in.

I've got 37GB left on my 40 Gig fat. Would the 40 Fat have enough RAM? I think I should be fine.

Yes I paid only £35 for my Western Digital 320GB HDD. I upgraded mine not just because of GT5 but I also use my PS3 to record TV.

Although the 40GB FAT PS3 should be okay I would still recommend everyone upgrades because its so simple and cheap. Also if PD does release DLC you may require that extra space.

A tip for everyone though who is going to do this. Only tighten the screws using a screwdriver when all 4 screws are in place. I made the mistake of tighten each screw and because of this I struggled to get the last one in!

I'm glad there's a big install, if I had it my way the PS3 would have full game installs like the 360. I know people make the 'games are way to big for that' comments but hard drive capacity keeps getting cheaper and larger and I would rather use the Blu Ray Laser less seeing as its really touchy in the 60GB's.

RAM won't be anything to worry about but I do have a couple of concerns about my FAT though, with some games the fan goes crazy and I think GT5 will probably suffer this too and the other thing is the slight but very annoying pauses while driving that happened in the GT Academy TT which as far as I can remember affected mosty FATs and I don't recall ever seeing any satisfactory explanation.

Its worth mentioning that if you're going to get a new HDD for GT then it is well worth getting the biggest/fastest drive you can comfortably afford. Usually with HDD's the bigger the capacity the faster the data transfer rate, also it is worth getting a drive thats 7200 rpm as this decreases access time, together it should make a noticeable difference to load times.... It sure did on the Academy TT. Plus there is no such thing as having too much space.

Has anyone tried using a SSD on the PS3? are they compatible?

Installing data on the hdd reduces loading times, but another (big) advantage is that the game will put less stress on the optical drive.

Anyways, this is great news !

@Maffski : i read a review last year, it can be done but the cost :scared:

This is great news, even if not 100% confirmed yet! Like the 360, I think all games should have the option to install.

I don't have a problem leaving the game in because that's no different to how it works with the 360 and most PC games. Plus, you would need the game in anyway to play it normally, so it's a moot point. In return for that and giving up 10GB of my spare 200GB, I'll happily take the benefits of improved load times, quieter operation, and less wear on the laser.

Space left: 378GB.

Oh by the way, if you guys still remember that we have to install GT5P's data into our PS3 HDD.

My one used up over 7500MB!!! :eek:

Yes, I've seen a few different comparisons before, but a quick google search showed up this comparison.

I'm considering buying a new drive also for my 60Gb Fat, or should I just get a slim for the new warranty and better HDMI? Are people still paying good money for working 60Gbs with backwards compatability? I'll need more space me thinks, even though I have got quite a bit spare, as I'm upgrading in a couple of days from a 3G modem which I can't share with my PS3 reliably to, to ADSL2+ which I will be connecting the PS3 to. So may be downloading demos, content etc.

Mine is even better - I paid less money for my PS3 that shipped with a 250GB hard drive already installed! It's only used for game data too, as I have a NAS with 6TB usable space for my media

So, funny that this was announced on his twitter. I just received my new 500gb 7.2k drive today.

Which I found for 60 bucks. :dopey:

However, I think my laptop is going to get it and I will put the 160gb 7.2k (that is currently in my laptop) and put that in my PS3.

Meh, I was hoping for a complete install so you'd only need the game disc to start and everything else would load from the HD.

There is no reason to not to allow as they demand internet connection constantly with GT5

which was installed to HD.

Not for everything though, the game can still be played offline.. The only thing it does is get weather updates etc and for online play...
