Hello all,

I can hardly believe it, but it's true. Just got to level 8, went to do the Intermediate Karting event and just as I pressed X to get into the Kart, my PS3 turned itself off. I left it a few minutes to let it cool down (not that it was particularly hot), turned it on and off at the back, and then it happened: The YLOD.

I should point out, and this will invalidate the rest of the post for a lot of people, that my PS3 was a launch 60gb. I'm fully aware that launch 60's are rare now as they all started dropping like flies, and I guess you could just put this down to old age, but some of you might like to take this as a warning.

This PS3 has not had an easy life; I bought it during my degree and I've put an obscene amount of time into various games, I've killed three dualshock 3's in the past two years alone (one due to throwing it at what I thought was a sofa but turned out to be a stone ornament, the other two due to wear), and I also played Black Ops for 31 hours in the first week of it's release, so I would have expected this to either happen sooner or just not happen... But GT5 was the final nail in the coffin. I'd been playing it from around 7.30pm until approximately 1.30pm, which, given the occasion and my usual habits, wasn't a particularly extended period of play time.

I suppose if GT5 does put too much strain on PS3's we'll find out pretty soon, but for now I'm going to attempt a YLOD fix to see if I can get the game out and back up my hard drive, then just buy a new Slim; this PS3 has totally had it and I wouldn't trust it if I do get it working again.

Great timing!

Its sad to see, but it looks like you got your money's worth. You can choose to send it in to Sony for a refurbished one for I think $150, or just buy a new slim for $300. I have a 80GB that came out in 07 with Motorstorm 1, so ya, I'm happy with it.

I've actually felt my PS3 warmer than usual while playing GT5. The machine is warm even though it's living in a cold and unfinished basement. Maybe it's because I've been running it for 4-5 hours straight before turning it off. But the scary thing is that the unit is still warm after I turn off the machine for an hour. I'm really scared that GT5 is gonna eat my PS3 alive. :nervous:

yeah my ps3 doesn't get warm or hot when playing gt5 (even after forgetting to turn it off and letting it idle while at school lol)
(320GB move bundle) then again its like 4 feet from a window unit lol

my system and my brothers had that issue a week ago. We bought some thermal paste, but it on, and both systems worked. His got messed up again, then we did some trick, with a penny or something and it worked. 10 bucks. Also my lense got messed up since mine is old, fixed that for 50 bucks too.

This is my worst nightmare. I have a 1 year old slim and im going to keep giving it breaks to cool down because i will cry if it dies

Well guys, thanks for the support! I have to say, given the huge lack of sleep (I slept 3 hours last night (mainly due to GT5-based excitement) and it's now 2:38am) I'm suffering, my initial reaction to this problem was probably not the best. I'm currently surrounded by PS3 parts, but the good news is I just managed to extract the disc from the Blu Ray drive by taking the cover off it and moving some of the bits by hand, it made the familiar sound of a disc coming out so I poked the edge with a screwdriver, so at least that £60 wasn't wasted!

I've been thinking about where to go from here and this is what I've come up with.

This PS3 is OLD. Even if I fix it (I RROD repaired a 2006 360 Core which has put up with a lot of Forza 3 lately, so I think I could), I just think something else will break, be it the PSU or laser or whatever. I also had very, very bad experiences with Sony's refurbished PS2's, so I'm very reluctant to buy a refurbished PS3; a friend's experiences with his PS3 would confirm that I'm justified in that respect. I noticed my PS3 behaving strangely a long, long time ago so I put aside some money 'just in case', at the time it turned out to be the hard drive though because when I swapped it for a 320gb it was working perfectly again, point is though, I still have that money lying around somewhere. Most of it, anyway.

So what I think I'll do is go down to town and buy a new, cheapest-possible Slim tomorrow, swap the HDD for my current one and take the lost saves on the chin; most of the games I have were finished and either being played for a second time or not being played, exceptions being MW2, Black Ops and Bad Company 2, each of which (I believe) store your online play data on their own server, so I won't lose my online progress. GT5 will be the biggest loss because it means I have to install the data all over again!

Quite happy I got the disc out, though, that was my main concern I think. Well that and the impending £250 deduction about to be made from my bank account, but I knew it was coming.

Oh and I'll just put this back together and sell it on ebay as a YLOD unit I guess, get £20 or so for it I suppose.

Hmm, I've got a launch 80 Gig, and I've got tons of GT4 replays saved on it. If I got YLOD, I'll have no way of watching them again... :(

My PS3 ylod'd awhile ago, I remember I was still able to play games on it somehow though. Something to do with holding down both buttons on the front or something. Sorry I can't really remember and couldn't be bothered looking into it for you XD

My CECHA runs loud when playing this game, but I'm not too worried about it. I replaced the thermal paste a good while ago, and mine had the 19-blade fan built into it as well.

Happens... sadly. With every major game release it's time for another "mass" death for PS3s. From the latest ones i can remember FFXIII and Heavy Rain. A lot of PS3s died back then as well.
It's doesn't mean anything like those games is too "tough" for PS3 or anything like that... It's just because many people are playing to those games (and sometimes playing to them non stop for days n_n ), that's it.

I have a launch 60gb as well. It's a real trooper. I've used it everyday for the past 4 years and it's still going. I use my 120gb slim to play GT5 since it's hooked up to a 1080p tv. If my 60gb dies I might just shed a tear.

Aww .. that's bad .. I've got a 40GB PS3 which is not available in the market anymore I guess .. no wonder if it's gonna die in an unexpected time.

Anyway, If you can get your Data, Game Saves, Trophies and all that stuff off your old HDD that would be nice .. I think you really pushed your PS3 to its limit ... dont let it run 24 hrs :D

Though never fun, and certainly not during the first few days of a highly anticipated game's arrival, I kind of expect consoles to die at some point or another... much like TV's, etc. They just have a certain life expectancy. A lot of PC motherboard vendors will display this... such as "50,000 hours", etc. Being that consoles now are basically non-upgradeable PC's, it figures this would be the case.

In your particular situation, it doesn't seem as bad (not that I'm saying it doesn't suck... it does) given the sheer amount of time you're implying you've put on it, and the amount of consecutive hours per session. If mine were to die right now I'd cry, and rightfully so. It's not 2 months old, and has seen maybe 20 total hours of usage so far. It's seen 8 today alone and I expect that trend to continue for a little while here, hehe. I hope it survives, I'd be far too impatient to wait for a repair and I REALLY don't feel like dropping another $300 on gaming right now.

Tbh I wish I had your knowledge/skills with consoles. I'm 100% fine with taking apart/building PC's, OC'ing, etc... but I'm scared to death of opening a console for some reason.

Good luck to you!

have Sony fix it for $150 then sell it for $300 on amazon

Are you crazy? If you send it to Sony you will lose all you your games saves, they erase the HDD.They're are people that no it for like $60-$70 like Gophermods.com the are reliable,i've heard a lot of good this about them.

I have a refurbished 60gb model, about two years old now. It replaced a launch 60gb. It actually seems to run a lot cooler with GT5 than others games, such as fallout3 and GTA4. Or at least, the fans ain't waking up the neighbours when i play GT5.

Fingers crossed (ive probably jinxed it now).

How about trying to fix it just long enough to back up your HDD?

I thought about it but strangely, given how much I've played the PS3 (two years at Uni and two years since, working freelance, gives you a surprising amount of spare time!), I don't think there's anything on it I really need. I backed up my second hard drive (I'm on my third, by the way, a sure sign of how much abuse they took!) and never really used the saves I copied except my Borderlands one, but I rarely play that any more anyway.

In the long run, it'll cost me money just to back up saves I don't even use, and now that I have GT5, probably will never need, so I think it's best to just accept that I need a new PS3, buy it, format my 320gb drive, put that straight in the new one, link my PSN to the new PS3, sync trophies, re-install GT5 and that's that.

I think this time round I'll buy a premium Civic Type R instead of the 86 Levin, that way I should be able to do the Sunday and FF cups straight off, unlike with the 86 where I could do the Sunday cup then had to spend all my cash on upgrades and other cars. Ah, the benefit of hindsight (already)!

Final thought before I go to bed (as it's now 3:52am): I'm so very glad this didn't happen tomorrow night, as I had pretty much the whole day tomorrow free...!

Two days ago I broke my 32" HD TV (right before the launch of gt5). Stuck with a crappy monitor for the moment, looks complete crap. Then tested it on a 46" HD TV.

I bought my launch 60GB so I could play GT5. After waiting patiently for the game to come out I picked up my pre-ordered copy, having left work early! I installed the game, set up my profile, and started racing! After the first two races in the sunday cup series my PS3 died. I almost did too!

An ironic time for my PS3 to give up the ghost...

This thread is making me very worried as i too have a launch 60gig fatty. I haven't put a lot of wear and tear on it. I usually game for 2 hours or less at a time, with the exception being the day i got GTA4 and today when i picked up GT5. I really hope i don't get the YLOD, not for the fact that i would have to restart and lose all my game data, but for the simple fact that i don't want to have to spend $300+ on buying a new slim. :(

I feel for you.

Mine YLOD'd exactly last week.
Playing Black Ops, then BAM.

Now I've decided to join GTPlanet to kill time while I save for a new PS3.
BUT, seeing as though I got GT5CE today, It's tempting just to break the bank and buy a PS3...

:(

Google some repair shops that specialize in PS3s. I've had 3 YLOD on me and won't send Sony another dime to "fix" a known problem. Sony will only give you a 90 day (I think) warranty after they throw yours in the repair bin and send you a refurb'd unit with a blank hard drive. Best thing to do is buy a new one (or two) and get the extended warranty on them. 3 years is a lifetime for a console.

go to www.jdelectronicsinc.com... I still have my launch 60gb, tho now it has a 500gb internal, anyway it went from texas to maui to washington and the cold finally did it in during the winter of '09 I sent it to this guy (see link) and shipped it to him. he had my same ps3 fixed and sent back to me within 5 days and even paid for the return shipping for $70. his prices range from $70 to $120 depending on the problem, but it was an excelent experience for me. He also gives a 90 day warrantee but i have been using my phat for 2 years since he fixed it with 0 problems.

I'm glad my PS3 is a 120GB slim, I mean, geeze...

I don't want to try to OD on this game a lot, especially if it's worth blowing up over. I would probably run the slim between 3 to 5 hours and cool it down 2 hours. Run the PS3 too long, and yeah, you'll increase the risk of YLOD.
