Since fall 2006 my 60GB Phat saw plenty of use while waiting pateintly for the next REAL GT. I was so ecstatic last week when I finally got my GT5 CE in the mail. After about 4 hours of gameplay my beloved PS3 froze, then died.

Flashing Red Light of Death and the five stages of grief:

Denial – "It just overheated."; "This can't be happening, not to me, not today, not after years of waiting."
Anger – "WTF" ; "Not fair!"; "How can this happen to me?"; "Who is to blame?"
Bargaining – "Attempt a DIY repair from fuzzy youtube video" "Buy a new PS3" "Try for a warranty claim"
Depression –" I'm going to die." "Who needs a 5/10 game wrapped up in a 10/10 sim anyway?"
Acceptance – "It's going to be OK" ; "Fork up $150 bones and get it fixed."

I'm just wondering if anyone else out there had this nightmare or if this only happened to me...

I can say it did cause my first system overheat...no lights though. At I least I think it was an overheat...music stopped playing, then when I exited the screen I was on everything got jumbled. Exited to XMB, only half the screen was visible. Let it cool for a few hours, been good as new since.

This was on a 120GB Slim from late 2008.

120 gb slim cut down in her prime (2½ hours)... she was barely out of the box

That truly sucks man. I had a phat die on me once before. It seems that the majority of people who are saying their PS3 gave out while playing GT5, had phats. I haven't seen anyone with a slim have that problem... yet :scared:

*knocks on wood*

so far my 2007 big block ps3 (40gb) has been working flawlessly. I just had once a freeze and that was during the online lobby thing, were the servers were competely overloaded.

my ps3 got really abused and used during the GTA 4, GT5P, COD MW2 times, and now its GT5... lets hope it managed until PS4 hits the market 👍

*knocks on wood again and is now worried that ps3 got jinxed*

Chris

Unfortunately due to numbers and percentages it is likely there will be quite a few PS3s die while GT5 is being used, it is unfortunately a sad coincidence.

It's probably why they are going to recall GT5, to stop all the PS3s in the world dying due to Sony's kill code so they can increase PS3 sales.

I have the same one, abused with GTA4, FIFA and now GT5. So far, so good. I'd buy myself another one, just to do a full system transfer.

Happened to me; except this was way before GT5. Maybe a year ago. But I just forked us 150 bones to get it fixed. I'll let you know if the fix is good. There's been reports that even after the fix the fatty will freeze and such.

My fat one died just before GT5 came out, luckily just within the last month of the extended warantee we got for it. Got a New slimline and a PS2 back as they couldn't fit it :D

Mine is a fat 60 GB upgraded to 500 GB 7200 RPM HDD bought in 2007. Can't believe I've had it for a better part of 3 1/2 years. No really big issues so far. A few times freezing but that's about it.

Because we don't already have an entire sub-forum on the PS3 with a thread dedicated to failures and issues do we?

Oh wait............................

I'm sure there's a perfectly logical explanation for all of this. I'm sorry, we'll have to make all of this go away.

Look at this shiny silver thing and repeat after me: "It was merely a case of swamp gas..."
