Looks like Gran Turismo still has its brand recognition, it has sold more than GT5 Prologue in less than two weeks! So far I've been enjoying it immensely.

To break it down GT5 sold 550k in Japan, 1.25 Million in North America, and 3.56 Million in Europe.

TOKYO, Dec. 10, 2010 --

/PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that the cumulative worldwide sales of the Gran Turismo® franchise, a genre-defining racing and car-life simulator available on PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, PlayStation®3 (PS3™) and PSP®(PlayStation®Portable), has exceeded 60 million units* as of December 6, 2010. This remarkable sales figure was achieved in just 12 years and 11 months since the Japanese launch of the first title in the franchise, Gran Turismo, in December 1997.

The Gran Turismo franchise, from the original Gran Turismo to the latest Gran Turismo®5, has continued to evolve alongside the PlayStation platforms. With its outstanding gameplay, beautiful graphics and true-to-life driving simulation, the franchise is recognized as the world's number one automotive game title on the PlayStation format, receiving high regard not just from game fans, but from professional racing drivers and enthusiasts in the automotive industry.

The ninth installment of the world's best-selling racing franchise, Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3 system, features a completely new physics engine for an improved feel for steering during turns and drifts, delivering a more intuitive driving experience than ever before. The game also features an impressive line-up of more than 1,000 licensed karts and cars from the world's top manufacturers. Other highly anticipated features include stereoscopic 3D support, real-time car damage, dynamic weather effects, kart racing, a Course Maker, and a deep online and community feature set where players can race online with up to 16 players through PlayStation®Network. With the widest scope and depth of gameplay options in the Gran Turismo series, Gran Turismo 5 offers users an entertainment experience that is only possible on PS3. As of December 6, more than 5.5 million units of Gran Turismo 5 have been sold worldwide. Gran Turismo 5 will further continue to contribute to the expansion of the PS3 platform.

For all Gran Turismo fans around the world, SCEI and the developer of the Gran Turismo series, Polyphony Digital Inc., will continue hereon to vigorously promote development of the Gran Turismo series, which can be expected to evolve even further through the PS3 platform and broadband network environment.

That is quite a bit. Hopefully sales keep up and PD gets enough money to do good patches and DLC.

I want a got-dang premium veyron.

I know about 10 people that are getting it for christmas (including me) and there is probably hundreds of thousands just like me.

I reckon atleast 6.5 million by 2011

As I said on another board, I hope Sony tells PD to start prepping GT6 for the PS4. It'll give them a more powerful piece of hardware (which they need) and gives them what should be a 3-4 year window to build up a product. While they do that they can continue to release new Specs for GT5 to keep costumers happy with it.

5.5 mil x $60US = $330 million! I know that's not completely accurate but still - roughly a third of a billion dollars. I hope PD keeps churning out new GT's for us for many years to come.

I reckon more around the $400-$500 because of the Collectors and Signature editions

Unfortunately, probably less than a third will actually go into PD's account.

Even then, I guess their budget has been covered up.

I think im right in saying that GT5 has sold about the same amount of copies in the space of two weeks than the entire Forza franchise. I think the overall sales of FM3 was 2.8 million.

I like this, Europe - the spiritual home of Gran Turismo!

These figures should go some way to alert KY that future Gran Turismos should be European based, and not Japanese based. 👍

I had heard that COD BO set some kind of record at 250 million. That was over 4 platforms. GT5 is exclusive to PS3, got to be a record.:dunce:

[joke]5.5 million disappointed customers or .....?[/end joke] :P

I guess this is shipped numbers/sold to retailers and not number of sells to the end user?

That is right ,the numbers are really just staggering considering it is a racing game.

And what has that got to do with anything? Britney Spears has sold a ton more records than other artists, but I wouldn't listen to that drivel. The movie Transformers made a ton of money and that's 2 hours of my live I want back. Quantity has nothing to do with quality. Not saying GT5 isn't quality, but to compare to another title based on sales numbers only is folly.

FYI, Sony typically reports sales numbers as sold to merchants. Actual sell-through numbers to the public will be a portion of that. Not that I trust how VGChartz does their numbers, but they are reporting 2.9 million sales, which is a far cry from 5.5 million. Kind of makes you think, eh? To be off that much by one org or some serious over-reporting by another.

The last time I saw Forza 3's sales updated was back in February and it was at around 2.5 million, its probably higher than 2.8 million now, i'm guessing its at around 4.5 now because the game dropped in price during the summer. And everyone knows Xbox gamers love Halo more than racing games, 30+ million sold.

Forza leaderboards show a little over 2.7 million gamertags who have played while connected to the internet. It is a little missleading though as many people have more than one gamertag while others may have bought the game used, rented it or borrowed it from a friend.

Sad. I don't feel ripped off at all. I am a little disappointed that some features are missing but I think these features will continue to come as the weeks go by. I am just glad they went ahead and released it rather than waiting even longer while the rest was added in.
