If you know how much seconds it takes to travel 1 kilometer, how do you work out how fast you are going in KM/H?

This isn't strictly a site issue, so I've moved it to the Rumble Strip...

There's 3600 seconds in an hour. Divide 3600 seconds by the time you have in seconds (that it takes to cover 1km) and that's the speed in kilometres per hour.

If it's 20 seconds, the speed is 180km/h (3600/20), for example.

Thankyou very much i was go-karting and my friend said the track was 550m. I took 28.5 seconds to do 550m so i did 28.5/550*1000 to find out how long it takes to do 1000m (1km)
I used your formula to work out that my average speed was 69.47km/h (43.42 mph) (I wonder how fast I was going on the straight (The Go-kart had 10HP)). Is 69.47 km/h fast for a go-kart? I'm 15 and the go-kart has no seat belts.

That's the great thing about speed, it's all relative. 70km/hr feels slow in a normal car, even in a Prius, but when you are a couple inches over the ground with nothing around you, it's a pretty good thrill. Another way to look at it, think of what would happen if you wrecked bad and got tossed from the kart. You would get messed up at that speed, right? Therefore you were going fast.

An average speed of 43mph in a 10bhp kart seems extremely high, especially when you take corners into consideration. My guess is that the track is shorter than 550m, closer to 400-450m.

EDIT: Which track is it?

That's one sketchy Go-kart you're driving.

Yeah, to be 15 again...sigh. Now if someone offered me a ride in a kart like that I would have to pass. I'm too old to get banged up anymore.

I've never been in a go kart that has seat belts. Perhaps the North American ligitation environment has yet to permeate motor sports over here.

Oh yeah, I've been karting recently over here.

No seat belts, 55MPH (good conditions) twin engined rocket ships!

You got a helmet, overalls and a neck brace. Gloves where optional (Nothing was said when I rolled the sleeves up, it was rather warm) and I won :D £40 each and there was 8 of us. The prize was a £20 off voucher your next visit!

I cant remember the last time I was in a go kart that HAD seat belts actually...

What was your lap time?

I went to a place called teamworks karting. Here is a link to their website: www.teamworkskarting.com/

Yeah, I know the track. It's a great circuit, and their Monday offers are fantastic! I just love drifting around the long left hander after the pits.

But going back on topic, I don't think it is 550m long, I think it's closer to 450-500m. Also, bear in mind they are electric karts, so the power and torque deliveries are immediate, with little drop off, so the raw bhp figure doesn't tell the whole story.

Yep, I love drifting that corner. What was your fastest lap time? And how old are you?

From what I can remember, I think it was high 25s-low 26s; it was a cold day, and the track hadn't had much use that day. For those who don't know, the track is concrete, and doesn't provide much grip when cold. I'm 29, and far too overweight....

Did you go to the one in Fazeley Street? On the straight part where you pass the start line it is really bumpy.

Yeah, that's the one I go to. I have asked them about resurfacing it, because it hurts my back a bit, but they're intent on keeping it. There is a great track on the outskirts of Wolverhampton, twin-engined karts with a figure of eight circuit, http://www.cannonraceway.co.uk/

You do NOT want belts in a kart, any more than you want them on a motorcycle. If the kart is in an accident you don't want to be tumbling through the woods attached to it! You absolutely want to be searated from it and having your own little adventure instead of being crushed by your own ride 16 times as it flips from catching a wheel on a kerb.

Sorry it wasn't on that track, I meant over here in N. Ireland. Outdoor circuit.

I had like the 3rd fastest lap of the 7 of us but I obviously was the most consistant.

I've been karting in Lanzarote, Canary Islands and that was very fun because the track is very short and usually quite busy so you have to avoid the slower people while trying not to go off, but it was extremly fun. I'm 13 by the way

How fast were the karts?

No but there accelaration was very good due to the fact that I am very light. They must have been about 10HP though.
