Is my Logitech DFGT wheel defective?

Hello.

I'm wondering whether my DFGT wheel acts properly or not. While playing the wheel (or something inside) clatters and crackles loudly, as if it could be out of order. It usually happens during playing GT5 (TDU2 as well) mainly on gravel surfaces and at normal tracks (for example on long oval bends, on the spiral bridge at Cape Ring and when I drive onto curbs). It's seems to be as if a part of this device spins around but it can't convey that motion farther. It takes the fun of playing away, especially on gravel surfaces.

I sent my wheel for warranty, they replaced some engine mechanisms inside the wheel (I can't examine if they really did this) but nothing has improved (maybe the wheel goes little quietly, but it may be an illusion). To better explain what I mean, I have featured clips on youtube while playing GT5 with my wheel. Sorry for poor visual quality of these movies, but sounds are hearing well.

The first video is from arcade mode (track Eiger Nordwand type W, Ford Focus WRC'08 - nothing changed, all aids off apart from ABS (1), Force Feedback 7).

Throughout the almost entirely duration of this movie lots of crackles and others weird sound are very audible. It's very inconvenient and greatly hinders the play. For example you can hear it from 5 to 12 second.

In second movie I used Kart Space II, PDI racing kart 100 and all other settings as above.

These crackles happen usually when I drive onto "chessboards" (forx example in 8, 18, 32 second), on the spiral bend (in 25 second) and sometimes on curbs.

I bought my wheel as a used one, the former owner assured that it was 100% fuctional and flawless. And I thought that those symptoms were normal.

I have no opportunity to compare my wheel with other used or brand new DFGT (because none of my friends have it), so I would like to know others DFGT owners opinions on whether this kind of acting is typical, or my wheel is broken and I should it back for warranty and demanding a brand new one.

I'll be deeply grateful for your advice.

Change Force Feedback to something smaller. Try 3, then go up. If the kart feels smooth the entire time you're driving on the flat, then you're fine. When you're driving and you let go of the wheel, the DFGT doesn't stay centered unless you have the car pointing directly straight on a smooth surface.

Also, try turning on the "power-steering" to see if you like it better.

Racing on dirt made the steering wheel feel like it was glued together when I had the FFB at 4 a few months ago. It's still a bit stiff. You have it at 7!

I play with the power steering off (in race options and in main game option as well) and it doesn't make any difference. I know that DFGT resits even on straights. What is werd is those loud crackles especially on gravel surface, I wil try it with lower FF.

Edit.

I've played again with FF strength set on 1, and there is a slight difference when I play at Kart Space, but literally no difference on gravel at all. There are the same loud crackles.

Turning the Power-steering assistance ON will make it less stiff when your car oversteers and when you turn the steering wheel either direction fast enough. If you meant that you tried it with it ON, then never mind, of course.

Earlier (some months ago) I played with power steering turned on and that was the same, no difference, I've tried many options but with no difference.

I don't know if this crackles aare normal or a flaw of my wheel.

So bearing in mind these movies (mainly its behaviour on gravel) should I send it again for warranty? And demand refund by replacing with a new one if they won't repair it? Are there grounds for this?

Your wheel is fine, thats gt5s problem.
No matter what ffb setting you use on gravel and snow its always set to maximum so to combat that just avoid rally.

If it's true it's a fail, because this wheel was created mainly to use it to play GT5 but you can't rally with it.

So there is no reason to send it for warranty?

sounds normal to me, the wheel has a vibration feature as well. My wheel does the exact same thing (bought it new) on bumpy tracks. I like my FFB excessively high for driving precision. My FFB is set to 10 and Power steering is off. I get those same sounds when I'm blasting down the mulsanne straight at 240 MPH in my speed 12. you do need to watch for the sticky pedals though, my brake pedal is not fully releasing and I gotta slam it to get it to fully release sometimes.

Gt5 just need a Road sensation adjustements for the steering like must of other games have...with dirt3 it's perfect ...gt5 rally , x2011 is very bad with steering

The same happened while driving off-road in Test Drive Unlimited 2 but I've disabled vibrations (I had thought it was only associated with Dualshock) and it really helped erradicate that problem almost entirely (the crakles sometimes occur when I hit something). I tried turnning off vibrations in GT5 options but it gave nothing.

I tried same thing ... no results too ...

Want an insanely smooth drive on the DFGT? Try unplugging the power and leave the USB attached... seems weird but it works on mine.

That'll wreak havoc on your usb ports, or so I've heard, so use that trick at your own risk.

As others have said, the sounds are normal. Rallying is quite difficult at night since the sound is quite loud and will wake people up, but on the other hand hitting curbs or jumps on a track like the Nürburgring produces the same sensation and you can actually feel it as well as hear it when you hit the curbs too hard. I really like it. :)

The sound is normal. The motor on the DFGT isn't good at the gravel and it is loud. When you turn the wheel it makes noise right?(no matter what) That is just normal operation to simulate a bumpy road surface with a loud motor. A G27 doesn't make this noise because the motor is more silent.
