Notes:
- May get a better idea of the running order today as most teams have completed base analysis and will go for race simulations and drain runs in this final day of testing
- Rosberg does a nifty 1:20.723 then does a 1:20.794 30 minutes later in another short run on softs. Seems like a Q3 sim. Mercedes making it look easy. Later on Rosberg hits a best overall time of 1:20.130 on Softs.
- Alonso does '20.494, but on Super Softs, same tires Massa did his fastest lap with yesterday.
- Lotus encountered gearbox problems again

Notes:
- Adrian Sutil makes his F1 return today, last having driven a top-tier GP car in 2011. He is being evaluated through testing against Jules Bianchi for securing a racing seat for this season.
- It is an unusually cold day in Barcelona today. This will cause tires to degrade at an increased rate.
- Lotus did an extremely long 24 lap stint on Medium tires.
- Most of all teams had complete reliability. Only one red flag all day, and only at the very end right before testing ended for the day. Giedo running out of fuel on a drain run.

Notes:
- Mercedes running a new exhaust solution. Willams style but with no vanes affecting airflow in the way of the exhaust itself.
- Lotus had technical problems all day, changing transmission in the morning and not being able to do any long stints after on.
- Red Bull also kept their runs short due to smaller issues with their car, including a compromised pit stop attempt late in the day, requiring a tow back to the garage.
- Sauber tested their Drag Reduction Device today, in a somewhat surprising move.
- Pérez did his fastest time on softs, very late in the day.
- McLaren seem to be easier on the tires, at least in today's program, compared to the rest of the teams, which called the degradation, " extreme." See the following chart for long stint references: http://f1fullthrottle.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/barcelona_1.png

- Rosberg's car had a gearbox failure early on in the day
- FIA deems Caterham and Williams exhaust conditioner vane solutions illegal.
- Lots of teams reported software issues strangely. Lotus hit with telemetry data corruption, flying blind after only two laps for a while. Reb Bull encountered baseline software issues themselves with prevented them from running for a time as well.

Lap totals:
1 Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) 145
2 Esteban Gutiérrez (Sauber) 142
3 Charles Pic (Caterham) 109
4 Sergio Pérez (McLaren) 97
5 Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) 96
6 Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso) 92
7 Valtteri Bottas (Williams) 91
8 Kimi Räikkönen (Lotus) 82
9 Luiz Razia (Marussia) 81
10 Jules Bianchi (Force India) 56
11 Pedro de la Rosa (Ferrari) 50
12 Paul di Resta (Force India) 49

Notes:
-Pedro De La Rosa wasn't even able to complete two laps before the rear of the F138 caught fire forcing him to end his program extremely early today. But Ferrari was able to fix the car and send him out for more testing.
-Vettel set the top time, just 1 tenth faster than Gutiérrez in the Sauber, on Hard tires.
-Track debris temporarily halted testing before it was cleared out. A visible hole was left in the turf bordering the track alongside the rumble strip, but was deemed to be safe enough to continue with.
-As Pedro de la Rosa has an official non-race driver title at Ferrari, the timing screens have him down as car number 32. Jules Bianchi, who hopes to be promoted to race driver at Force India, has 15 rather than a test driver number. Does that mean something?
-Sauber completed more laps over the four days than anyone: 430

Have you seen Kimi's steering wheel?

It has a "Jenson" button, an "Sat Nav" button, a "mute" button so he doesn't have to tell his engineer to "Leave me alone" and a button for "Ice Cream"

_65707102_raikkonenwheel1.jpg

All it's missing is a beer holder :)

Don't you think it's interesting that although Renault is now Lotus, they still keep that traditional colorwheel center selector?

I think he's asking if there's a video stream from the track. Nope, never is. The closest we get to getting video action is in wrap ups of testing done later in the week. The only real footage we will see is on Ted Kravitz' recap during Friday's F1 show.

Max Chilton just shunted off the back straight - Dry Sack.

He took a hit on the right rear and damaged the suspension.

Marussia really doesn't need this pain!

So Mercedes suffered a fire due to a wiring fault and Lewis will be running tomorrow.

Looks like it came down to it in the final minutes here.

Webber outdid Grosjean's fastest, long standing, time of 1:19.796 by just about 9 hundredths with the RB9 coming in at 1:19.709.

Then comeback Button shows up and goes a second faster! 1:18.861 is the fastest time of the day courtesy of McLaren and the MP4-28.

Here's how the rest fell into place on day 1:
hMBU9Nk.png

1 Button McLaren 1m18.861s 35
2 Webber Red Bull 1m19.709s +0.848 71
3 Grosjean Lotus 1m19.796s +0.935 48
4 di Resta Force India 1m20.343s +1.482 84
5 Ricciardo Toro Rosso 1m20.401s +1.540 65
6 Massa Ferrari 1m20.536s +1.675 62
7 Hulkenberg Sauber 1m20.699s +1.838 75
8 Rosberg Mercedes 1m20.846s +1.985 11
9 Maldonado Williams 1m20.864s +2.003 78
10 vd Garde Caterham 1m21.915s +3.054 58
11 Chilton Marussia 1m24.176s +5.315 29

Max Chilton just shunted off the back straight - Dry Sack.

He took a hit on the right rear and damaged the suspension.

Reports suggest it to be the other way around (though that is before investigation is concluded) and that a suspension failure caused Max to crash.

Massa looks happy with the new Ferrari, I hope this time we get 3 to 4 teams fighting for pole right from the start of the championship ... and through to the end of course.

Jenson Button World Champion 2013! It's not like I'm jumping the gun or anything.

The last few years I've been tempted to put money on that as he's always got decent odds. Currently he's at 8/1 for the title.

But testing is testing.

Ah, testing. My least-favourite time of the year because everyone gets carried away over lap times that ultimately mean nothing. Case in point: people predicting Jenson Button as the 2013 World Champion on the back of a single flying lap on the very first day of the test.

All you have to do is look at last year's testing results and compare the standings to the rest of the season. Some people just assume that the teams are going all out when that's not the idea of testing.

We should give them a better show at least, let's have all of the drivers compete in a 100m sprint foot race, or have them all race go karts, or make the engineers play Jeopardy!
Whoever comes out on top there makes it clear how the season's gonna play out just as much as these installation runs.

I wouldn't bet on him because he isn't good enough. He is good, but there are better drivers on the grid. He has a better chance in 2013 now that Lewis isn't in the same car, but if Jenson wins the WDC it's because he had the best car while better drivers had lesser cars.

What a load of rubbish. He's already proven himself in a car that didn't have any sponsorship on it. And he's already more than held his own against an often-patchy Lewis Hamilton. Jenson is in one of the top three teams for a damn good reason, and it isn't his nationality. He's an intelligent, strategic driver who can carry a set of tyres a lot further than almost anyone else on the grid, and who can bang out consistent laps as well as anyone else on the grid.

The ink on his contract has barely had time to dry before Luiz Razia jumps straight into the MR02:

Nice!

Thanks for the updates guys.

I updated the OP with more info and new links.

Here's a video of Max Chilton's crash from yesterday btw:

Hamilton crashed, seemingly driver error, simple lock up?
Not a good start.

We'll find out more soon.

In the mean time, here's a little interesting article saying Felipe Massa thinks this year's Ferrari is, " in a different world" compared to last year's:
