In the spirit of http://www.the5k.org I propose a competition of GTPlanet avatars that meet or beat 100 x 100 pixels and 5120 bytes (5K). First an open commitee will define the rules, then submissions will be collected, and finally the voting competition will take place.

Basic ruling I'd like to have is a point system that includes credit for using less than 5120 bytes. We could do something like, each vote you receive in the competition is worth 10 points, and each byte you don't use in your file counts as an additional point. Also we could say each frame of animation adds 10 points or something.

The valid formats for avatars at GTPlanet are gif, jpg, and png so I guess that's what's allowed for this compy, unless someone has reason otherwise.

Yeah! Anyone interested? What changes need to be made to make it more interesting?

EDIT:

THE RULES

Maximum File Size: 5KB (5120 bytes)
Maximum Image Size: 100 x 100 pixels
Deadline: Friday, November 26th, 1:00AM Central Standard Time (-6H GMT)

It can be animated. It can have transparency. It can be smaller than 100 x 100 or 5KB.

New rules. A 100*100 white frame in gif format is 156 bytes. A comp in this forum usually gets 15-20 votes. Go figure.

I like the idea of an avatar comp except the rule of getting points for not using diskspace, that's not what I find creative. But a kb limit is fine.

Quite. And I've already found an error with my quick number quoting. If someone were to make an avatar that was just a few bytes, big enough to make a file, they would score 5000 points. The point system needs works, but I think it could be fun.

EDIT: Yeah, that (:

Creativity comes in many forms.

How about making the voting points worth 100 points a piece and the size is on a 10:1 ratio.

156byte gif with 0 votes = 496 points.
5120byte gif with 5 votes = 500 points.

Or you could have it bracketed such that a still image is worth xx points and any animated gifs must be between xx and xx frames and worth xx points plus voting.

Was that too many "xx"'s?

I like that. Animations worth more or less than stills? Have to be more since they will undoubtedly take more file space. Between 2 and 10 frames and worth an extra 100 points?

A 10 x 10 gif with 2 frames is 49bytes = 607 points

The number of frames didn't appear to change the size of this blank file.

Of course it does.
I just think it's interesting to throw that in - make people think about how much space they're using and tweak their images for the best result. Though it's looking difficult to tune the system.

How about the first time through we do it GTJugend's way and just make a size limit. Outside of that it's open play.

Maybe a round two will incorporate other stuff.

Bring on your entires!

So we only have the 5KB limit and we can only have one entry. I am in, I just want to know the rules. When does the comp. end?
