Composite- 👎

I had a chance to try out some more games on the new tv last night to check out the difference. I will try to give a quick rating of the difference between regular TV and the one I bought. 1-10 10 is the best looking.
1. GT4(ps2)-------10---1080i. I cant imagine graphics getting any better. Just incredible. Anything that you normally see in the backround that is dull, well in 1080i it is perfectly clear. Like Grand Canyon. All the backround is clear!
2. Rallisport Challenge 2(xbox)------8.5---major difference in 480p
3. Doom 3(xbox)------8.5--already great graphics but in 480p it is even better.
4. Toca Race Driver 2 (xbox)----7.0---No dramatic change but still better
5. Gauntlet 2(xbox)-----6.5
6. Forza(xbox)-------5.5------I was actually surprised how bad the backround graphics were in 480p. The cars looked good but the backround was blury and disappointing especially after seeing GT4 and Rallisport Challenge 2.
update 12/16/05
7. Half Life 2 (xbox)----480p-----8.5 This game already looked impressive but now its even better and all of the colors like blue green and red seem to pop right out at you.
8. Halo 2 (xbox)-----480p------8.7----This is by far the most colorful game I have played on the new tv. Extremely colorful and very very impressive
9. Battlefield 2(xbox)----It is NOT 480p------5.0----Even on the new tv the graphics are not that good but its still an awesome game despite the blurry graphics.
10. GT3----not 480p----7.5---To my surprise it looked quite impressive. Obviously not GT4 impressive but it was a huge difference over regular tv quality. Very colorful sharp game play. The cars looked great but the backround was pixelated when I was in motion. Still not bad at all for an old game.Tahiti maze looked very colorful.
11. Gauntlet Dark Legacy(xbox)------7.0----I played the OLD gauntlet dark legacy this weekend on the new tv and I couldnt believe the difference between the xbox and PS2 version on this tv. I dont even think it was 480p on the xbox but dang I dont know what that tv has in it but the graphics the old Gauntlet looked better than I have ever seen in my life on this tv. My GF, brother, sister and I all played and it was beautiful!! It was like playing the game all over again.
12. Gauntlet Dark Legacy(PS2)-----2.5----Just looked terrible on the new tv.

EDIT: Added this important note.
I also need to post something very important. In some of the games I play, the graphics dont get activated until you are actually playing the game. Some of the intro videos and set up screens can be a little hazy on some games. However with that aside once you are actually playing it will be a huge difference. I really noticed this effect in the beginning of Doom3.
As shown above GT4 was so incredible its almost beyond the quality of any PC game I have ever seen.

If you would like me to check out a game let me know. 👍

I will add this to the first post since it is very important.

I've been playing PS2 games via a composite connection after over four years of a component connection. It's so horrible, I can't begin to tell you. MGS3 looks horrible. All those leaves and bushes and grasss looked so damn blury and unreal. I tell you, I've been really spoiled with the old connection. I've gotta get a new HDTV set, and soon. But, too bad the SED sets w/ Cell chips haven't shown up yet!

Another game update.

I completely agree. My 19" TV in the game room is still set up with the old composite cables and its absolutely terrible. Component cables are soo much better its night and day difference with the color and sharpness. Well the HDtv helps too. Even my girlfriends new 20" tv looks soo much better than composite and her tv is in s-video. I had a hard time playing online last night on the old tv set up. I might have to buy another TV for my game room for online games. Component is the way to go if I get another tv but I might settle with svideo in the game room.

I know this is kind of a step in the other direction but what about GT3? I really been thinking about getting back into this game, as I never played very far into it before GT4 was released. Im a johnny come lately.

That is actually a great idea. I will try that out.

I have been trying mainly xbox games because most of them are 480p but I think I will start trying some PS2 games too. I might have a chance tonight to do this.

GVAN,
I just tried out GT3 per your suggestion and to my surprise it looked quite impressive. Obviously not GT4 impressive but it was a huge difference over regular tv quality. Very colorful sharp game play. I actually give it a 7.5 rating. The cars looked great but the backround was pixelated when I was in motion. Still not bad at all for an old game. Adding rating to first post. Tahiti maze looked very colorful.

To my (somewhat limited) knowledge 480p stands for 480 progressive scan. Look here for a description.
1080i is a HDTV standard. Look here for a decription.

I too was greatly impressed with GT4 at 1080i. But as I live in the UK I had to import a US PS2 and US GT4 to see the game play in 1080i and 480p. The UK PAL version does'nt have these options.
GT4 looks pretty decent in 480p too but 1080i is best. A great pic on my DLP!
Oh, I don't know if anyone knew this but the Xbox in Europe does'nt have progressive scan. It was disabled for some reason.

And of course with the 360 and PS3 have 720p and 1080i (the PS3 may even have 1080p I think) as standard.

Just out of interest CAMAROBOY69, what aspect ratio do you play games in, especially games that have a widescreen option like GT4? I ask because I see your tv is a 4:3 aspect ratio tv.

Thats cool, I played GT3 this afternoon at the girlfriends house with standard cables (ick!) and then game home and played a while with s-video and even that was an amazing improvement. 👍

If I remember correctly it has an auto setting that sets it to 16:9 when it detects HDTV. I know it crops the top and bottom off just a little to give it that wide screen effect.

What does 480p and 1080i mean, anyway?
I believe slackbladder answered that.

That is a great idea. I was going to post pics to compare the difference but my camera is very old and would not even come close to showing how incredible the difference is. My old camera is only 2.2 megapixels. The Grand Canyon is stunning in HDTV 1080i. I really wish I could get video or pics of it.

Oh yeah if you like it more on S-video make sure you get a chance and check it out with the component cables. The red, blue, and green colors are so nice its like you were color blind your whole life and now you can see.

**game update for first post**
I also have another game to add to the list above. I played the OLD gauntlet dark legacy this weekend on the new tv and I couldnt believe the difference between the xbox and PS2 version on this tv. if you're impressed by fake 1080i from the ps2 connect your pc via component or dvi or hdmi or vga and youll be amazed. try out the 1080p, yes p movie trailers on apple.com.

i love how gt4 looks better than most xbox games on 1080i mode.

im rocking gtplanet right now on 720p...i am the win!

That's definately 16:9 ratio. A 4:3 pic would be far more cropped left and right.
You are right. That pic above is in 16:9 ratio. Too bad a camera cant catch the quality of what you actually see in the game.

Luckily I don't need to see a photo, I can see the real thing! :)
But for those without they might be surprised at the extra quality that comes with Prog Scan/1080i.
Also Tekken 5 and Soul Calibur III look good in Prog Scan, though to my memory thay are both in 525p. Resident Evil 4 also looks superior in 480p - much sharper and well defined. But to be honest you sometimes only really notice the difference with a large screen tv.
I wonder, how many people have a 360 plugged in via composite? What a waste!

Today my iScan HD+ arrived. The deinterlacer chip of the processor can deinterlace 1080i into 1080p, but I wonder how well. Looks probably not as good as 480p-wide scaled up to 1080p, because HD deinterlacing needs far more performance than scaling up a progressive SD source. I will test it tomorrow with GT4 which features 480p and 1080i. But I bet 1080p from 480p-wide looks better than 1080p from 1080i.

I did that on my new HDTV just for the heck of it and omg it was a night and day difference. Those that dont have the 360 hooked to HDTV correctly are just missing out.
component 👍 👍 👍
composite 👎 👎 👎

no this isnt meant to be a spamming reply, but I'm interested to know if HD can do anything for graphics on PSone games. Like what would GT2 look like on HD, better or no difference?

The only thing that would look better would be the color since the game cant be played in 480p, 720p, or 1080i. So to answer your question it probably would not look much better on an older system. I cant completely verify if this is correct but I would guess it would be the same. I tried Battlefield 2 and it is NOT in HD and it looked the same on my HDTV as it did on my regular tvs. It was more colorful thats all.
Bottom line. If the game your playing does not have 480p, 720p, or 1080i then it wont look much different on a HDTV. ;) Almost all xbox games are at least 480p so it makes most of those look a lot better. :)
Most of the 360 games and PS3 games will be 720p or 1080i.

GTRacer4
PS3 also does 1080p .
Yes. Basically if you dont have a HDTV by the time you buy a PS3 or XBOX360 then you wont be able to view the games full graphics quality at all. The difference is almost the same as going from a PS1 game to a PS2 game.
All those rendered looking incredible pictures of PGR3 and Kameo are from a 1080i set up. 👍
There really is not much more that could be said. If you dont have HDTV you will be missing out.

The future is HD in other words. I am even buying a HDTV this year, since there coming down really quick now. Since the next step for people who already have HDTV but not in DLP format.

Is the DLP HDTV's.

OK i'm a n00b when it comes to TV's, but what is a DLP HDTV and what is the difference between the two?

DLP stands for Digital light Processing. Look here for more info! I have one and am very happy with it. But I have little HD stuff to use with it yet (still waiting for a 360). The main reason I went for DLP is there is no screen burn issues so you can play games for as long as you like on them! There are only two downsides - 1. The bulb has a life of around 8,000 hours. And 2. Contrast ratio can be low making dark scenes look murky.
You can get DLP tv's with 1080p already in the US Samsung US . This is only one manufacturer. There are others.
One thing to point out. 1080p won't be standard on all games on the PS3, I think but may be for Blu-Ray. Until the PS3 is out it's still up in the air. However games will look and do look brilliant in 1080i and 720p. Really that's good enough and a 720p/1080i tv will be significantly cheaper than a 1080p tv.

Do you need a HD Ready TV to get the most out of a Next Gen console? Yes, you do. But if it's still too much than go for a TV with Progressive Scan.
