Anyone else a huge Incubus fan? Incubus is my favorite band, how about you?

Here's something I wrote for my website (www.kevinsjukebox.com) [note: it's still under contruction]
A Breif Overview of Incubus' Discography

Incubus band members:
Vocals - Brandon Boyd
Guitar - Mike Einzinger
Bass Guitar - Ben Kenney (formerly Dirk Lance)
Drums - Jose Pasillas
Turn Tables/Miscellaneous - DJ Kilmore (formerly DJ Lyfe)

1. Fungus Amongus (1995) on the Stopuglynailfungus Music on Chillum Label
This album is so much different than anything else Incubus has produced in the last 10 years. It was their firsit album, and you can tell. They started writing this album when some members of the band were only 15, an impressive feat. I can describe this album in 3 words: hard, raw, and funky. Dirk Lance is a fantastic bassist and it shows throughout this album.
Track recommendations: Psychopsilocybin, Sink Beneath the Line, Hilikus, Shaft
If you are a first time Incubus listener and decide to see what Incubus has to offer, please don't start with Fungus Amongus. Many listeners are turned off by how raw this album is, but I assure you, this is only the start of Incubus' evolution throught their lifetime. It's a good evolution.

1.5. Enjoy Incubus (1997) on the Sony Label
This isn't a full album, it is an extended play. It contains a few of the best songs from Fungus Amongus, only re-recorded. It has the first appearance from Incubus' first turntablist DJ Lyfe. He packs in even more funkyness into their already funkny songs and starts off what makes Incubus great. The addition of the turntablist would make a huge difference in Incubus' future. Their current turntablist, DJ Kilmore, has introduced many new instruments to Incubus' repertoire. Anyway, on to the EP. In addition to the Fungus Amongus songs, they add in 2 previously unreleased tracks, Version and Azwethinkweiz. These songs add much needed diversity to the Incubus' sound. Azwethinkweiz is in my top 5 favorite Incubus songs of all time. The saxophone is a great addition.
Track recommendations: Shaft, Version, Azwethinkweiz, Hilikus

2. S.C.I.E.N.C.E (1997) on the Sony Label
S.C.I.E.N.C.E is Incubus' first full-length album on a major label, as Stopuglynailfungus Music on Chillium was Incubus' own independent label. This is their strongest album, in my opinion. Brandon Boyd stopped screaming and rapping and started actually singing. He really establishes a unique sound that has escalated him to superstardom and teenaged girls' walls everywhere. This album shows extreme diversity. It ranges from metal to alternative to even experimental, all the while keeping the funk influence alive. It also marks the return of the saxophone from Enjoy Incubus' Azwethinkweiz in Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song). Dirk Lance gives a stellar showing of this skills as a bassist throughout.
Track recommendations: Vitamin, Idiot Box, Glass, Magic Medicine, A Certain Shade of Greens, Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song), Deep Inside
Note: The whole album is amazing, I love each and every song on the album fully.

3. Make Yourself (1999) on the Sony Label
This is the album that jetisoned Incubus to MTV superstardom. This album has 3 of their biggest singles Drive, Stellar, and Pardon Me. They were pretty much all you heard on the radio between 1999 and 2001. This is when they evolved into a poppier sound. It is their closest album to mainstream alternative rock, while still the funk. One of my friends who is also a big Incubus fan considers the song Pardon Me to be one of Incubus' best, if not the best, songs. I consider it to be the best of the three singles off of this album. Battlestar Scratchlactica has on of my favorite basslines of any song I've heard. DJ Kilmore makes his first appearance on this album as the turntablist.
Track Recommendations: The Warmth, Stellar, Drive, Battlestar Scratchlactica, I Miss You, Pardon Me

4. Morning View (2001) on the Sony Label
This album is to Incubus as Dark Side of the Moon is to Pink Floyd. It is their masterpiece, created how they wanted it. To make this album, members of the band rented a house and lived in it for a few months while they wrote and recorded the album. Not much can be said album, other that it is a work of art, from start to finish. It flows better than their other albums, less maybe Light Grenades. It appeals not only to the MTV crowd, but also the hardcore Incubus songs that have been loyal listeners since Enjoy Incubus. It pretty much signifies the end of the funk era for Incubus, as it is Dirk Lance's final ablum. The final song, Aqueous Transmission, is a work of art in itself. It transports the listener to a raft on a mountain stream, hundreds of miles from civilization. It is a great way to end this great album.
Track Recomendations: Wish You Were Here, 11am, Warning, Mexico, Are You In?, Under My Umbrella, Aqueous Transmission

5. A Crow Left of the Murder (2004) on the Epic/Immortal Labels
Megalomaniac was a mistake. In my opinion, it is one of the worst songs Incubus has ever produced. It simply sounds like a honcho down at the record company called up and said, "Make a song that will satisfy the MTV generation, you have a week, I don't care if it's good, just make something you can sing along to." And it sound like just that. It almost makes me sick while listening to it. Luckily, the rest of the album isn't nearly that bad, it's actually pretty good. The whole album has kind of a heavier feel to it. It makes me feel like I have a wet jacket on. I know that sounds really wierd, but I think the album feels sluggish. This album is the first album featuring Ben Kenney on bass guitar.
Track Recommendations: Talk Shows on Mute, Pistola, Southern Girl, Zee Deveel, Leech

6. Light Grenades (2006) on the Epic/Immortal Labels
This album flows like quicksand (the first track); it grabs you and doesn't let go. Sometimes I just want to listen to one or two songs, but before I know it, I'm on the 3rd or 4th track. It works well here. None of the songs are really as strong as songs from the pre-crow era, but when taken as a whole, it's pretty good. Dig is a fantastic song that appeals especially to the MTV generation, and to a lesser extent, Anna Molly. Many casual lsiteners that say they've loved Incubs since the beginning seem to hate this album, but I don't think they've given it enough of a shot. First time I listened to the album I would have shared the same cynical attitude. But, since it was the first album I've bought in a while, I gave it another shot, and now I am addicted to it. It's a great album to just put on as background music. I don't necessarily like the direction the band is going, but I don't hate it either.
Track Recommendations: A Kiss to Send us Off, Dig, Anna Molly, Love Hurts, Oil and Water, Paper Shoes, Pendulous Threads

My favorite albums in order of best to worst
1. S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
2. Morning View
3. Make Yourself
4. Enjoy Incubus EP
5. Light Grenades
6. Fungus Amongus
7. A Crow Left of the Murder

Top 5 favorite Incubus songs (in no particular order)
A Certain Shade of Green
Battlestar Scratchlactica
Azwethinkweiz

I don't know about this band , but well done for this article. Whatever the main theme is about, it seems you have spent some of your free time...

I think I'm totally alone in this, but A Crow Left of the Murder is probably my favorite Incubus album. It really feels complete to me, and every song is good. Morning View was good, but ACLOFTM just sounds more cohesive to me, not to mention catchy.

I like the straight-up rock that they play now more than the early funk that they started with though, which might partly explain it.

Morning View and Make Yourself FTW. Incubus is a great band, although I don't like much of the new stuff..

I really enjoyed Make Yourself, but hated Morning View. It was because of my dislike for Morning View that I was hesitant to spend time/money with the next Incubus albums. I passed on A Crow Left of the Murder completely, and have been listening to Light Grenades, which is not so bad.

I'll agree with pretty much all of your assessments, though I rate Crow higher than you do. I like Morning View except I actually think 'Wish You Were Here' is one of their weaker songs. Maybe it was just so heavily overplayed - it fit so many different genres that nearly every station that wasn't rap or C&W had it in heavy rotation for a long time.

I do tend towards the funk side of the spectrum because I have a serious weakness for it (hey, I even have not one but TWO KC & the Sunshine Band albums), but some of their later pop-rock is somewhat more mature if less edgy.

I bought Light Grenades for my wife for the holiday, but it's been in her car ever since so I haven't had a real chance to listen to it.

One other note: Fungus Amongus was never intended to be released as an actual album. It's a collection of demo tapes that they made while they were coming together as a band, and was not mixed or released until after at least S.C.I.E.N.C.E. came out. I'm impressed by the musicianship and songwriting they show even as teenagers.

Personally I liked Crow.. But I am 17. Make Yourself is a fine album aswell as Morning View. My favourite song is probably Pistola, just hits you like a bullet and never stops.

I think Incubus' best work was S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (which I'll refer to as science). Thankfuly their quality didn't really descend after that album, they just got softer and maybe more commercial after it. However, they still play their funky metal songs which are quite nice.

After Science I really liked Make Yourself, Enjoy Incubus EPs and Morning View. Light Grenades sounds alright, but granted, although I've heard it, I haven't really listened to it yet.

So the postponed Cleveland show that I went to (Feb 3rd) was rescheduled to May 27th, which officially makes it their last tour date, barring more postponements. maybe they'll try to make this show the best for the 2000 people in this small venue

I was lucky enough to see them on Feb 8th, but Brandon wasn't feeling that well yet. He had to take a break between songs. Not the best show they have ever had but they still worked hard to give us our moneys worth. I also like their current small venue tour idea.

^^ Wow, that looks awesome UnoMOTO! . I just bought a pair of tickets to see them Nikon Theater @ Jones Beach, NY. Kinda expensive but I'm sure they'll be worth every penny of it.

I'm also starting to get into their music as well, though it might be too late now .

And also, excellent review Event! I give you props for that
