Astonishing, that's all I can say. I mean, we all knew for a while now that this would happen sometime, I just didn't think it would be so quick.

VGChartz
Vgchartz.com, the most comprehensive Videogame charts in the world has announced that lifetime sales of Nintendo's Wii have passed Microsoft's Xbox 360 on a worldwide basis as of August 23rd. (*)

Two years ago, very few analysts would have predicted the Nintendo Wii would be market leader this generation against the established Playstation and Xbox brands. But analysts can be in error: Vgchartz.com data, which is based on sample data from retailers all over the world indicates that the week ending August 23rd Nintendo's Wii (which was released one year after the Xbox 360 in November 2006), currently standing at 10.57 million consoles sold, passed Xbox 360 lifetime sales of 10.51 million units, making Nintendo the new market leader in both the home and handheld videogame console businesses.

As weekly data from vgchartz.com shows(**), the console outsold Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by a margin of 2.3 : 1 worldwide on average each week since its release, selling at an even faster rate than the most successful console ever created, Sony's Playstation 2, despite still being sold out in most major markets.

This is the first time that a company has been market leader in the home console and the handheld market since 1994 when Nintendo’s Super NES and Gameboy dominated worldwide.

Vgchartz.com is proud to be first to announce this major sales cross over as an independent tracker of sales and expect this to be a milestone for the current generation. In just two years, home console sales for the three major manufacturers have effectively reversed. This will have a large impact on third party publishers and will undoubtedly influence the decisions they make in the future.

One factor that has no doubt helped Nintendo's Wii to gain so quickly is the console's broad appeal across all age groups, demographics and countries. Current sales are pretty evenly split between the three major markets – 3.46 million have been sold in Japan, the American market (including Canada and South America) accounts for 4.24million and Other markets (including Europe and Australia and a few niche markets) for 2.87 million units sold, respectively.

Notes:

(*)Vgchartz.com tracks consoles sold to consumers and not to retailers and other outlets. While Microsoft’s Xbox 360 lifetime shipments may be slightly higher than the shipments of Nintendo’s Wii, more Wii consoles made it from retailer to consumers than Xbox 360´s, due to the fact that Wii remains in a state of shortage in most regions around the world and units are sold just shortly after they become available to consumers. This furthermore explains why numbers on the front page of VGchartz.com are always a bit lower than the numbers given by the manufacturers themselves: To Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo every console that made it to retailers is “sold”. In reality these consoles may be lying in retailer warehouses and outlets for weeks until they are sold to consumers.

(**)Vgchartz.com projections are based on sampled retailer data from all over the world. Vgchartz.com collects data from a carefully selected group of retailers and determines projected sales figures for entire regions with knowledge of market size, retailer market shares, retailer bias and so forth - the same methods used by larger and more established sales tracking firms. a deserved victory for the wii! nintendo FTW!

It's nice to see Nintendo getting the sales they deserve! I knew the PS3 wouldn't sell well, as it has too much new technology - so the price is too high. Wasn't sure about the 360. But great for Nintendo :)

Wow...surprised! Go Nintendo.

takes the lead because of alpha mom support amirite.

Seriously though, this is pretty good news... the 3rd parties better be delivering serious games at TGS instead of non-games, minigames, and PS2 ports.

This is really funny though. Right before the systems launched, we thought we'd be able to walk into a store come Christmas and buy a Wii easily. We thought the PS3 was going to be sold out for months upon months. And of course, the Wii is going to be sold out until at least early '08, and the PS3 was readily available in January.

Bizarro world.

But still no serious racing sim. huh.

I was thinking the same thing, actually. It wasn't until a couple days before the Wii's launch that I realized I might not have a chance at getting one right away. I'm glad I lucked out, walking away with the 68th console out of ~100, even though I didn't spend the night in front of the store.

I was checking out the release date forecasts on EBGames.com, and I think I'll be plenty happy by January '08, with or without more 3rd party support. Hell, this upcoming Monday marks the release of the first of the games that I really bought my Wii for. :sly:

You'd think someone would go for it, considering the Wiimote's efficacy as a "wheel." Not to mention the fact that the Wii's USB ports could theoretically be used for a DFP/G25.

Such a shame too, because the MTO-developed GT Advance games were awesome.

Yeah, it's a shame they didn't realize that they shouldn't just recreate GT Advance for the Gamecube and then port it to the Wii years later.

I mean, c'mon -- the engine sounds aren't really any better on the GameCube/Wii than on the GameBoy Advance. Double-U tee eff.

That is an insult to the GT Advance series.

And what's even more amazing is that in July, the Wii sold 425,000 – more than the DS, and more than twice as much as the 360. And this is in the traditionally slowest month of the year with no big software releases.

Nevermind the fact that the DS outsells the PSP by more than twice as much. And the GBA was still hanging in there.

And the funny thing is, the Big Thrii (Metroid, Smash Bros, and Mario Galaxy) haven't even been released, nor has Wii Fit.

Nintendo is really rolling in cash.

Nintendo knew they had developed a licence to print money. The fact that Microsoft (in particular) and Sony fobbed them off even rather recently is all the funnier.

Metroid? :sly:

This does not surprise me at all. Nintendo has been very good with how they are marketing stuff, and how they think things out. Pull more casual gamers in, etc. And it worked, big time.

All the hard core Sony and Microsoft fans doubted it, but behold. Now I just need to get one.

wow ps3 is getting killed.

wow, this is very suprising...go wii lol.

It was obvious when someone did a presentation in our class a couple of months ago.
A couple of people from my class had or were planning to buy a Wii.
Only 1 or 2 had a Xbox360 and no one even considered buying a PS3 because of the price
(except me, because i think the ps3 is well priced for all the features it has.)

Screw this! Wii is for kids!! Hardcore gamers get 360's and PS3's and Gaming maniacs would get a gaming PC!! :sly:

Well it was obvious from the start, being cheaper and more family oriented makes it a very utilized console. Everyone can play it, it is fun and exciting (and gives a great workout if you know what i mean) and it was just 199.99 US$ (far cheaper than the XBOX 360 and PS3) so who would not want a deal like that? I mean casual gamer are not exactly wanting to find the "greatest console ever" with its huge HD and realistic graphics and fast online capabilities, they just want to have fun!

However,i'm not getting a next gen console till next year :grumpy:

^I thought its price was U$249,00?

I'm planning on buying one next year. I really want a PS3 but I can't afford it at the moment, nor an HDTV.

I'm not surprised, it's priced so that many people can afford it, it has some sweet games, and it pretty innovative. I love mine and I'm pretty sure I play it more then the 360.

The Wii is ruling the roost now, but think in two years time, will there be any decent games out ? The innovation of the control system may be exhausted by then, and as past Nintendo consoles have gone (trust me I have them) the games have gotten worse and worse, not to mention the main games are very similar to their previous ones.

When the price of PS3 goes down, and when Blu-ray technology is what everyone wants in conjunction with their HD tv's, PS3's will be flying off the shelves, also PS3 has a much longer life span (technologically speaking) than Wii too.

And the games forecast for PS3 are superior to Wii's in every way.

BTW I don't really like the Wii, I didn't really like the Cube, the N64 was a flop.

NES and SNES were NIntendo's best consoles and probably in my fave 5 consoles of all time.

The Wii will remain successful because of the very topic of this thread -- if you sell systems, you sell games. It's as simple as that. Developers look at how well each new console is selling when making their decisions on which console(s) to produce games for.

The exhaustion of a control scheme's innovation never stopped any of the consoles of the past decade from remaining successful despite using the same basic controller idea that videogames have used since the dawn of time.

If the price of PS3 goes down (enough), and if Blu-ray technology is what everyone wants in conjunction with their HD tv's, PS3's will be flying off the shelves...
Fixed. ;)

...also PS3 has a much longer life span (technologically speaking) than Wii too.
Nintendo was also making and selling SNES games up until 2000, ten years after the Super Famicom was released in Japan, several years after the 32-bit generation began, and the same year that the PS2 was released. The SNES remains popular today.

And the games forecast for PS3 are superior to Wii's in every way.
Subjective. I can't think of anything that grabs my attention on the PS3's list (there certainly isn't enough for me to warrant buying the console), but I do know that by January '08, my Wii games library will be making me very happy.

And the games forecast for PS3 are superior to Wii's in every way.

Number geek much? Having shinier graphics and such does not make a superior game. Otherwise Tetris would not be played anymore, etc. I play my gamecube and SNES much more than my PS2 and why? Better games.

At the moment, I can't think of a single game I am interested in for the PS3, except maybe GT5. The Wii on the other hand, has several titles I want right now, and more I will want in the future. Nintendo focuses on fun to play, easy to learn games (Like Smash Brothers), while Sony seems to want to just make things prettier. Ultimately, the classic controllers MS and Sony are using will die. People are going to want more involvement in the game, and those relics (aside from the motion bit, the Six-Axis is pretty much unchanged from the original PS one controllers). Nintendo innovates, and everyone else copies - they did the analog stick first on a controller, same with the shoulder buttons. They try different stuff, and it works sometimes and fails others (Virtua Boy anyone?).

But if you look at the sales for the DS and Wii, and the rate of sales on the games, they are winning. By alot. They've been in the video game market for over 20 years, they certainly know some things about what they are doing.

And Wofle, I'd +Rep you, but I can't at the moment... you gotta stop on the awesome posts so often :dopey:

Cough cough *Atari* cough cough.

Okay okay, you got me there... I'll change my statement to the POST video game crash of the early 80's. :sly:

Well now that you metioned it, the SNES is still popular today and since it was cheap, many airlines has the SNES as an on-board entertainment system (i know Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines has one but i'm not really sure about the others....) so you can say that Nintendo is a timeless masterpiece. (well all the consoles actually, but not as much as a Nintendo) For instance, you could still play any games on your Gameboy and say it was still better than a PSP (like Pokemon Yellow/Blue/Red. I always got a kick out of them :))

Very similar? Almost all major franchises' games are similar sequel to sequel. Hell, most games in general aren't innovative.

As for games not being there two years down the line, well, what do you expect? Almost all the developers thought the Wii was going to be another GameCube, and when it started selling like crazy, it took everyone by surprise. You're not going to see developers and publishers announce big titles a month after it became clear the Wii isn't a fad. If we don't see anything good at TGS for the Wii, then you'd have a point, but since TGS hasn't come around...

When the price of PS3 goes down, and when Blu-ray technology is what everyone wants in conjunction with their HD tv's, PS3's will be flying off the shelves, also PS3 has a much longer life span (technologically speaking) than Wii too.

Yeah, it's going to take several years for the PS3 to reach a reasonable mass market price. It's not even clear that there's going to be a $499 PS3 this holiday season. And by the time it gets down to $299, the Wii will be cheaper, and so will the 360. So when it gets down to a mass market price, few people will care.

As for Blu-ray, that format war hasn't even been decided, and if Blu-ray actually wins, I doubt the average consumer is going to buy a PS3. They're going to buy a standalone BD player.

And there's a little thing called momentum. By the time the PS3 becomes a reasonable purchase for the average consumer, the Wii will have utterly crushed it in sales. If the Wii "fad" (which is totally bunk) dies because people want HD, all they have to do is introduce a Wii with HD capabilities (whether that'd be upscaling on the current Wii or a brand new Wii console with full HS support) with a few new colors.

And theoretically, even if they didn't do any of that, and the Wii stopped selling, it'd require a massive amount of PS3 sales consistently every month worldwide for it to catch up. And all because of what, HD? Blu-ray? If they want HD, they could always buy the cheaper 360. If they wanted Blu-ray (assuming it wins and becomes the successor to DVD), they'd buy a standalone player.

wow ps3 is getting killed.

Oh, I don't know... just because Nintendo has been able to sell systems twice as fast as MicroSoft doesn't mean that Sony is any worse off. What would be helpful would be a month-by-month sell rate.
