Explorer.exe problem...

I'm having a bit of a problem with Explorer at the moment. When I open My Computer, I get a box with "connect the the internet" and "stay offline" buttons. When I press Stay Offline the error box comes up, asking me if I would like to send Majorshaft an error message, and Explorer crashes.

I'm sure I can date this firmly to when I deliberately crashed Explorer - don't ask.

Also - could Firefox extensions trigger errors? I installed the FoxyTunes extension at about the same time Explorer started playing up. I'll uninstall it and get back to you.

Any ideas?

Sounds like some form of malware.

You should start the machine in Safe Mode, and check the StartUo folders within the user profiles (c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup). Don't forget to check the All Users profle).

Also check in Regedit in HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

Finally, check the running processes in the Task Manager.

Type the process name or Run key name into Google, and you'll generally find some information regarding the nature of the process.

Reboot after each test (startup, registry, processes) to see if you still get the error.

This applies to Windows 2000 and XP, but should be generalisable to any OS.
