I'm pretty sure I've had spyware put on my computer, and my homepage has been permanently changed to *a bad link*
I've tried changing it to other good sites, and it just automatically changes it back :grumpy: :yuck:

I've tried VirusBlaster 6.2 and it needs to be registered, and I cannot pay for anything over the net or otherwise:nervous:
How can I remove this crap for free?????????
And how can I prevent my homepage being changed unlawfully (if possible)?

Bloody scum-sucking a**hole spyware makers :grumpy:

There are quite a few Spyware packages on the market. Most of the good ones are free.

The Spyware program usually has built in protection against Spyware changing your home page address.

I use Ewido and that seems to work fine for me. Also perform a full virus scan using AVG

I'm not quite sure, but I think spyware is doing this as well: My computer, when on the net and limewire, keeps freezing like every 2 minutes, its excrutiatingly annoying :grumpy: :grumpy: :grumpy:

Any ideas???????

Oh, sorry about the title, I noticed it got changed, sorry about that, but I'm sure you can imagine my frustration....

Also, does anyone know where I can get a free port scanner to scan all activity through my port? I like to keep a close watch on what goes in and out through it....

I use Norton Anti Virus. Works very well and is constantly being updated. Cost me anout £30 stirling. Worth every penny. AND it tells you when there is a threat to your homepage.

no offense meant to you, but everyone i've spoken to about anti virus software in real life and on forums, despise norton and McAfee.

Anyway, back onto the topic at hand, i'd suggest AVG antivirus which is very good and completely free, always updating with any new releases and easy to use. To combat spyware i use spybot: search and destroy, which is also simple to use and completely free.

My experience with Norton Antivirus/Firewall hasn't been good.

It crapped out on me several times when trying to reinstall or upgrade it on my own PC or on family/friends PCs. It would refuse to acknowledge that a previous version existed, not properly uninstall a previuos verions, or would throw up random error message about DLLs being mission when the PC booted up after a reinstallation.

I had even worse problems when trying to remove it so I could install a different antivirus. That just threw up even more random error messages. It seems to get it's claws into Windows and refuses to let go, even when trying to replace it with a newer version of itself!

I've heard similar problems from a few people I know who had it installed. I'm currently running NOD32 and I think it's awesome! Not only does it behave itself, it detects spyware and adware that Norton just ignored.

To hell with Norton and their crappy software!

edit: The fact that an antivirus software constantly updates itself isn't a reason to recommend it. ALL antivirus software upgrades itself. It wouldn't be much use if it couldn't download new definitions for new viruses.

Norton Antivirus has historically been very very good, but recent versions have me longing for the good ol' days. Norton's firewall (Internet Security) is very very slow, a bit clumsy, and far beyond most users' ability to cope with when it asks what to do with something. Problem is, in recent versions they are no longer separate products. If you install it and configure it to turn off the firewall so you just use antivirus, then at every login it pops up a message saying you have to fix some of your protection, and if you do, you've turned the firewall back on. It WILL NOT ACCEPT a configuration with modules disabled. And the adware detection they've added to their antivirus is also VERY slow: when it detects something, it wants to run an "examination," which may take 15 minutes, during which time your PC is crawling. This is on a 2.4, 2.8, or even 3.2 GHz machine.

As for upgardes, you are better off with a complete uninstall/reinstall. nothing from Symanetc has EVER been very good at upgrades.

In a recent test I saw which compared various AV and software firewalls to each other and to a "virgin" Windows XP system, the Norton Internet Security was the slowest to boot, by almost twice the time!

After all that, I can't make a different recommendation because I still use Symantec's product: their Corporate Edition is paid for by my employer and installed on my laptop and my home PC. That version is an incredible piece of software, but a different animal altogether from the home software they have.

As for spyware, I rely on Spybot, Ad-Aware, and I'm looking at AVG's new product, used to be Ewido. The latter seems awfully slo in my one testing.

Like Ben said, get Ad-Aware. After it saves your ass you may consider buying the full version, like I did. It's extremely useful.

Norton Antivirus is gone for me. I used to love it. Now though, it is simply annoying sometimes. Like Liveupdate - it takes up so much of my resources that I can't even start My Documents while it is doing the automatic update. It interferes with virtually everything I do as well. That's why I switched to Windows Live OneCare Beta.

Anyone else use Windows Live OneCare?

As richardrfo brought up, I've heard nothing but bad things about Norton, and my parents insist on having McAfee on their computer -- as a result, their 2.0GHz Dell performs less than half as fast as their old, old 166MHz Pentium I MMX used to!! Seriously. Of course, the old 166 had Windows 95 to contend with and the Dell has Windows XP, which is a massively hungry memory beast to begin with, but McAfee's use of memory is appalling.

Moral of the story? You should only get McAfee if you're looking for a retro trip, to see what it would be like if you could run Windows XP on a 386 CPU.

Get Spybot and AdAware, and make a visit to Trend Micro's Housecall every now and then. Those things are all you'll ever need.

I just make an image with Ghost. If there is too much spyware on my computer, I use that image and be done with the problems.

Limewire??? Limewire is a beast and will put all sorts of naughty little things on your computer. If you want to know about better programs to use, MSN me as it's against the AUP to discuss it at this site.

To summarise what everyone has told you....

AVG - Great free antivirus
Spybot Search & Destroy - Spyware removal tool
AdAware SE - Very good Adware remover
Windows Defender - Keeps Spyware away (Final release is out now).

A couple of others that I find useful...

Outpost Firewall Free - exactly what it says, a free firewall
Spyware Blaster - stops a lot of spyware from getting installed in the first place. Prevention is better than cure, after all ;)
Mike's Ad blocking hosts file - blocks a long list of known ad-servers. I've modified it slightly on my machine to allow ads for places like GTP, where they help keep the site running.

I appreciate all the above comments about Norton. All I can say is from my own experience it has worked well . I wouldn't necessarily recommend it per se . Everyone has to make up their own mind.
