LIke the thread title says, I have almost convinced myself to get a psp now that I found out you can play old ps1 games on it. I thought I would ask the community what they think I should pick up along with my PSP. What accessories are a must and what should be avoided? Armed with this information I intend to make a wise purchase and not spend money on things that aren't really necessary or beneficial.

Thanks guys and gals!

Don't. It's way too much trouble, unless or maybe even if you have a PS3. But if you do, get the base pack and buy the headphones and controls and at least a 2 GB memory stick, preferably a 8GB. If you already have a 9v charger, don't get one.

I would definitely recommend Lumines as a game purchase, if you are into puzzle-type games. I personally prefer the 1st one over the 2nd, plus it'll be really cheap to pick up now. Locoroco wasn't a bad game either, and that should be selling at a reasonable price now too.

An accessory that is necessary if you want to reduce scratches and damages from a fall is a case to keep it in. The one I used was was this. It has protected my PSP from 2 falls onto a hard surface, and still is in very good condition.

Avoid screen protectors - they are a pain to stick onto the screen properly without it bubbling and in general making it look horrible.

i really like to play motogp on my psp. ATV offroad is fun too. I got a 4gb card and I have more than enough space.

STILL WAITING FOR GT:MOBILE!!!!!

Don't get a case. My PSP has been toughened by being thrown by my mom 3 times and falling onto marble from 3 feet once. Only damage is that the disc cover sticks out a millimeter and there's scratches. I dunno why everyone thinks they're so fragle...

I'm talking about drops from about chest height - about 4/5ft in my case. There is no way it'll come out unscathed from a drop like that without some kind of protection - trust me, I know. I witnessed someone doing exactly that and the plastic cracked on impact. The PSP still worked but it didn't look pretty no more...

I just realised the Value and Giga packs come with a cloth case, which might be good enough in most cases. I bought a proper case instead just because I found the case fiddly. That's just me being me though...

Mine don't look pretty. Mine was stomach height.. The battery and cover came out but no additional damage besides a scratch.

'Cause parts often fail from nothing more than normal use (particularly the screen, disc reader, disc ejector, disc door, square button, and analog nub), and in most cases -- like the one G.T referred to -- dropping it will cause major damage?

My disc reader failed once. I just moved it back and forth a few times then banged on it. My analog nub's fallen off. I put it back on and it's stayed. My disc door and ejector have failed. I just popped them back into place/unstuck them. My screen has 10+ dead pixels. I don't really care. Whats gonna happen to my square button? :scared:

Whats gonna happen to my square button? :scared:
Sometimes they can get stuck when you press them - they don't depress when you let go of it. And usually they aren't as sensitive as the rest of the buttons. This is a design flaw due to the button being so close to the screen.

I believe the issue has been sorted with later models, but I'm not 100% sure.

G.T is right -- the square button is so close to the screen that the switch on the inside couldn't be located directly beneath the button. Instead, the switch is a little bit to the right, almost between the triangle and X buttons. Because of this design anomaly, the button can become unresponsive or get stuck.
