Hmm, I was going to post a thread about this, but this thread is good enough for it I think...
I have a DFP (A driving force pro steering wheel) and I don't use it. I am rubbish at it, and using it used to annoy my housemates, what with it's whirring and me shouting expletives at it

. I didn't spend long persevering with it and so I remained a button-masher... having spent my entire GT career using the controller, it felt like the sensible option. So I kept the wheel so I could use it occasionally, but now it only ever sees the light of day at UKGTP meetings. Infact,
it has even started going to them without me
Anyhoo, Xmas holiday 2006, and New Year 2007, and I notice a strange feeling in my left hand... my thumb was permanently sore. It became extremely painful to do certain things, like opening bottles, and (bizarrely), unbuttoning my jeans! Playing the guitar was also problematic, but so too was using a PS controller. Long story short, I assumed I had developed something akin to RSI, but didn't attribute it to anything specific at the time...
I saw a doctor and I got my thumb X-rayed, and a few things were ruled out. After a few months of physio, and some drug treatment, the problem started to subside - but never fully went "away". But I felt that it had regained it's strength and that the sharp, excruciating twanges of pain I had been getting had virtually disappeared. I asked my physio about playing Playstation and he recommended that I shouldn't do it if was causing pain, but that so long as I was doing the exercises he recommended, I shouldn't stop using my thumb for "normal" levels of activity.
Despite this, I embarked on a faithful
recreation of the 2006 F1 season, starting in April 2007... I found it pretty hard going, and had to quit it for a while, but ultimately I managed to get it done, but the effect on my thumb was noticable. And perhaps even more foolishly (but even more enjoyably!),
I went to SFGTP2 in October 2007, to take part in a GT4 LAN hosted by Smallhorses and his good lady wife, itgirlxx, in California... fortunately, I didn't feel too many ill effects, despite two whole days of racing...
A few, short months later, and 2008 brings to an end the long PS3 "decent game drought". A friend bought me GT5

, and in Jan 2008, I started playing it in earnest. Come April 2008, and I finally get my PS3 on broadband, and the good times start to roll. Since then, I've been playing GT5

regularly, but have noticed a few subtle differences... subtle, but in my personal context, highly significant...
The first thing to notice is that the pain is coming back

And this time, given that I now purposefully avoid using my thumb for other 'strenuous' activities, I do now feel that the pain is being specifically exacerbated by using the PS controller...
The second thing to notice is
when I am getting the worst of the pains, and the rather depressing answer is "when playing racing games in 'competitive' mode". GT5

now has more "competitive modes" than ever before - live racing against opponents and time-trials. Previous GT's had plenty challenges, like golding licenses etc., or 200 A-Spec point races, the former being atleast one thing I suspected of contributing toward my initial injury.
The competitive elements in the game is something that I think is one of the single most likely contributors to making this issue worse... I can (and do) press very hard on the buttons, esp. in the heat of a battle, or in order to squeeze that last 0.005 of a second required for a Gold license... Perhaps it is just me, or perhaps it is simply a case of not listening to the safety advice. But either way, I thought it was worthy of mention that, in my case atleast, Gran Turismo is literally becoming a pain - at that is a major pain, because it is one of my favourite pasttimes... As for the DFP, I've figured that it offers a possible solution, but the time and energy required to convert from affirmed button-masher to DFP user might simply be too much. I also now have laminate flooring throughout my flat
I'd be interested to hear if anyone has felt anything similar... I suspect that my ailment is pretty uncommon, but I also suspect that my problem is fairly novel at the same time i.e. I have been button mashing for 12 years, and I started at the relatively late age of 21, and am now feeling the effects....
